Mr. Montpetit joined the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the mid-to late 1950s. His first posting was to Moscow, 1959-1962. He befriended George Costakis, a local employee who assembled a significant Russian avant-garde collection but could not continue this occupation freely as he came under pressure from the Soviet authorities. Through Mr. Costakis, Mr. Montpetit purchased several pieces which we find offered in this current sale. Along with purchasing from Mr. Costakis, Mr. Montpetit acquired various objets d'art and other items of value (icons, silverware, etc) on a 'parallel' market.
