This auction will include paintings by Canadian and international artists, fine porcelains and glass, sterling silver, jewellery, bronzes, period and modern furniture, Persian rugs, early maps, militaria, antique books and documents, ancient objects, icons, timepieces, etc. Provenance of the many Russian objets d'art included in this sal are from the Family of Jacques Montpetit, Ottawa. Mr. Montpetit joined the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the mid-to late 1950s. His first posting was to Moscow, 1959-1962. He befriended George Costakis, a local employee who assembled a significant Russian avant-garde collection but could not continue this occupation freely as he came under pressure from the Soviet authorities. Through Mr. Costakis, Mr. Montpetit purchased several pieces which we find offered in this current sale. Along with purchasing from Mr. Costakis, Mr. Montpetit acquired various objets d'art and other items of value (icons, silverware, etc) on a 'parallel' market.
