History ~ Vernon, Texas Vernon, Texas, traces its roots back to 1858, when the site was known as Eagle Springs by the Tonkawa Indians. After the Civil War, a wave of settlers arrived, leading to the establishment of a town in 1880. Initially, it was named Eagle Flat, but postal authorities objected due to the abundance of "Eagle" towns in Texas. The community then adopted the name "Vernon," inspired by George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Vernon's strategic location on the Great Western Cattle Trail fueled its early growth. Millions of cattle passed through the town, establishing it as a vital trading and supply center. By 1889, Vernon was incorporated and boasted a population of 3,500, supported by infrastructure like a street railway, fire department, electric lighting, and multiple businesses. The arrival of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway in 1885 and the St. Louis, San Francisco, and Texas Railway in 1901 solidified Vernon's position as a regional hub. The town continued to prosper throughout the early 20th century, serving as a center for agriculture, oil, and education. Today, Vernon honors its rich heritage while adapting to modern times. Its history as a frontier town, cattle trail stopover, and thriving community is preserved in its architecture, landmarks, and the stories passed down through generations. Vernon stands as a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of its founders, and a reminder of the pivotal role it played in shaping the history of Texas.
