Description

Henry S Gillette was born January 29th 1915 in New York City, the son of a prominent physician. His middle name was taken from his mother who was Annie Sampson Gillette. He later married Gertrude Wachtell, a practicing artist. He resided in Battery Place, Crugers NY.Gillette attended many fine schools including St.Marks. He later studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City, and he received extensive training in the field of illustration at The Grand Central Art School. At a later point he attended The American School of Art. He had eight years of intermittent study along with continuous training in drawing and painting at The Art Students League in New York City.Mr. Gillette always acknowledged his illustrious teachers. Although he studied under many professionals, he cites Reginald Marsh (1898-1954); Raphael Soyer, (1899-1987); Max Beckman( 1884-1950); and Robert Beverly Hale (1901-1985), who specialized in Drawing and Human Comparative Anatomy. In an interview, "Something About The Author", Gillette said:"My upbringing as a child was among authors, artists and musicians. My mother died when I was seven. My father survived by surrounding himself in the cultural milieu of his time. I attended boarding school at the age of ten."Gillette had an intense fascination with the early illustrations in the classic children's stories of those years.'I was always drawing pictures.'He mentioned the various influences that would help to enhance his art education. The school emphasized the needs for learning more than just basics. He was encouraged to study piano and to see the need to learn a foreign language such as French and Italian. Good writing was emphasized as a pre requisite in any communication.Henry Gillette lived and worked in Italy for a number of years. Later he traveled throughout Europe observing works of art as he traveled. He was especially interested in The Museums of Italy and England. He also spent time observing works of more contemporary movements. The adventures continued, and he enjoyed living and working in Mexico for a number of years. After this period he traveled to Canada and throughout The United States.Gillette was the author and illustrator of Leonardo Da Vinci, Pathfinder Of Science and was the author of Raphael, Painter of The Renaissance. He produced many covers and illustrations for magazines including Field and Stream, Woman's Home Companion, Liberty, St Nicholas Magazine, Cavalcade and others. Gillette received awards from The American Watercolor Society (Zabriskie Purchase Prize), Salmagundi Exhibits, and Pastel Society of America. He was a member of The American Water Color Society NY, the California Watercolor Society, a Iife member of the Art Students League NYC, the New York Artists Equity Association, Garrison Art Center, Texas Watercolor Society, and Herron Institute.
