Lead "Alpheus Keech" Antique American Folk Painting
Description
Rare "Alpheus Keech" Antique American Folk Painting - Showing "Emery Island" (present day Calumet Island) - The painting is signed "KEECH" (Alpheus Keech - American / Clayton, NY - b. 1855 - d. 1926) on the wheel shroud of the Paddle Wheel Steam Ship that is seen in front of the Island - Oil on artist's board - Inscribed "Emery's Island St. Lawrence River - Aug. 20, 1896" (in 1896 it was known to Keech as the Island owned by "Charles G. Emery" hence "Emery's Island) - The Paddlewheel Steam Ship is inscribed "Empire State" (we wonder if this is the ship that Keech had his floating Souvenir Painted Paddle Store on) and is flying many flags including the British flag, the French flag and the American flag flying above them all at the stern of the ship, along with various pennants - There are more flags on on poles on Emery's Island - Alpheus Keech had a studio and gallery on Riverside Drive in Clayton, NY - The building exists to this day - When you stand on the porch of that building, with your back to the studio's plate glass window, and look across the River, the scene that you see is exactly the scene in this painting ! Alpheus Keech looked at this scene every day! (we have included with this listing a present day picture of the studio and a picture of the view from the Keech studio....PRETTY DARN COOL! - We are certain that this painting has many more stories to tell! - It remains in good condition with surface dirt and mild abrasions - It is mounted in its original molded and gilded gesso over wood frame - The frame is in poor condition with significant losses to the gesso molding (not examined out of frame) - Measures
