THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST QUARTERS
EX. COL. E.H.R. GREEN/ NEWMAN, as noted on the insert.
All three die marriages for the 1825 are overdates, and there are two distinct obverse dies. The B-1 is the rarest of the three, considered to be Rarity-5. While all 1825 quarters have been cataloged for ages as the 1825/4/2, Steve Tompkins refers this obverse die the "so-called 25/2." While the 2 is clearly there, there is just as much evidence of the underlying 4 as well. We agree with the Rea, et al designation of 5/4/2. This borderline GEM was struck from a perfect state of the dies without any hint of the reverse die crack that appears on the later state.
The presently offered example is the FINEST KNOWN of the die pair, sitting at the very top of the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census, and is one of only TWO Mint State examples of the B-1 (the other being the PCGS MS63 CAC ex Eliasberg-Garnder). Like many of the classic, early silver coins from the famed Newman Collection, this coin boasts a gorgeous look. Exceptionally lustrous silver surfaces beam boldly, highlighting rings of teal-blue, amber-gold, lilac-dove, and champagne-silver on both obverse and reverse. The devices show an exceptional strike, with crisply defined details. As expected for a coin of this lofty state of preservation, there are no serious marks, lines, ticks, or any thing else that distracts from the exceptional visual quality. Everything about this coin, its rarity, its high grade, its old pedigree, its eye appeal, make it a numismatic treasure.
Ex Col. E.H.R. Green Collection; Col. Green Estate, to St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co (partnership of B.G. Johnson and Eric P. Newman); Eric P. Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Collection, Heritage, November 2013, lot 33344 (as NGC MS64 * CAC); our consignor.
PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. A decade ago, this coin sold for $47,000, a record for a Browning 1. Disregard the published levels, as they cannot possibly reflect the actual value of this rarity in this grade. The PCGS Price Guide value of $40,000 is clearly based off this coin's sale a decade ago; we expect it will sell for more today.
