Warhol was an amazingly talented artist and like many artists of his era, his artwork was misunderstood by too many people. Typically, people either like Warhol's art or they don't. However, those who didn't appreciate his artistry and brilliance, never truly understood the simplicity of his message displayed in all of his artwork. In 1963, the art critic Gene Swenson interviewed Warhol. Warhol made the statement, “I think everybody should like everybody. Swenson asked, “Is that what Pop Art is all about? Warhol responded saying, "Yes, it's all about liking things." In that response, Warhol gave the world his simple message about his artwork. The image that initially gave notoriety to Warhol's art was his painting of the Campbell Soup Can in the early 1960s. He was about 34 years old. During that time (1960s), Campbell's soup was a huge selling item and in the cupboard of nearly every kitchen in America. His simple message remained consistent throughout his life as an artist. Simple realistic images that the masses of people would recognize and could relate to in some manner. Color and a slight degree of abstract expression without confusion, was part of Warhol's simple style of his artwork. Everyone could relate to the image of the Campbell Soup Can, or the image of a woman's High Heel shoe, Mickey & Mouse, Pinocchio, Marilyn Monroe & other celebrities, the Coca Cola bottle(s), and so many others. However, his brilliance extended beyond the image itself. His first image of a Cow (early 1960s) also made people think of milk, which also was in every refrigerator in every household in America. Warhol, by using simple images, led people to use their imagination in its simplest form. Quite brilliant. This piece being auctioned today is not only rare, it's unique compared to most of Warhol's artwork. Pinocchio is one of Walt Disney’s most classic characters, and one not often found painted by contemporary artists. Pop art is defined as the visual art movement and this artwork exemplifies that definition. All his images from the 1960s to present day, portray the simple things that people like. Yes, it's all about liking things. This beautiful rare piece is a keepsake for generations.
