Lead Important Painting Gifted to President LB Johnson
Description
Bruce Hafley (American, 1920-2011). "All the World is Welcome Here - L.B.J. Ranch" - 1966, tempera on panel, signed and dated lower right. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Oehlert, former US Ambassador to Pakistan, to President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson as a token of gratitude and in honor of their well noted hospitality. Painting accompanied by a presentation book bearing a black and white photo reproduction of the painting in an unfinished state which illuminates the various inscriptions that identify the "LBJ" scenes depicted in the allegorical painting. These inscriptions were painted over in the final work and can only be seen when viewed under raking light. Introduction page to the book reads "Johnson Hospitality / Having been privileged to know the joys of Johnson hospitality at the LBJ Ranch and at the White House, we long ago began planning a unique and very personal painting that would express our genuine appreciation of your many kindnesses to us. Eventually, Bruce Hafley, one of Georgia's greatest artist, was commissioned to develop such a painting. We chose the Ranch because we regard that warm and wonderful home as a source of your strength and pleasure, and it is significant to us because we first experienced your remarkable hospitality there on the occasion of the visit of President-elect Lopez Mateos. We felt the spirit of the LBJ Ranch - 'All the World is Welcome Here!' Not only did we feel it, but we heard it whispered by the trees of the Hill Country, and repeated by the Pedernales. Anxious that the painting live in this spirit, without committing the impropriety of 'portraiture without consent' we agreed with the artist that this could be accomplished by allegory. Hence the use of dolls and toy figures in an early Renaissance technique, combining realism with wholesome humor, without resorting to caricature - like a classical mime. If some of the figures may seem to resemble certain well-known personages who have visited the Ranch, we choose to attribute it either to coincidence or to the artist's subconscious! The black and white photographic reproduction of the painting contained in this portfolio was made of a semi-finished stage in order to permit the identification of the numerous 'LBJ' designations represented by individual figures and scenes. Those identifications were concealed in the final rendition. Confident in the talent of the artist, and of the distinguished writer who has commented in poetry (Paul Roche - British, 1916-2007) we hope that the conception meets with your favor. / Alice and Ben Oehlert". Accompanied with signed correspondence between Lady Bird Johnson and Wendy Oehlert Adams regarding the planned transfer of the painting to Ms. Adams after Ms. Johnson's death. Approx. 21.5" x 20.625" (framed), 20.5" x 19.625" (panel). Provenance: From the Estate of Benjamin H. Oehlert, Jr., ambassador to Pakistan from 1967 to 1969; bequeathed by Lady Bird Johnson to Wendy Oehlert Adams, daughter of Ambassador Oehlert.
