[Travel Diaries] 3 Diaries. ++ D. W. Farnsworth of Machias, Maine, traveling to Barbados, Guadeloupe, and St. Thomas on the Brig State of Maine, A. S. Cates, Captain. Nov. 2, 1854-Jan. 7, 1855. Farnsworth departs Machias on “My first voyage at Sea” with a cargo of corn and lumber. On Nov. 21, the vessel arrives at Bridgetown, Barbados. “This is an Eng. Isle, Came to Anchor about 9 oclock & in less than 20 minutes we were surrounded by Negros… the Capt. & I steped into a Darkey Boat alongside & were rowed ashore by 4 of the Blackest Negroes I ever saw.” Offered an unsatisfactory price for its cargo, the vessel sailed for Guadeloupe and St. Thomas. The crew collected sea shells and took in 50 tons of sand as ballast. Record discontinued enroute to Attakapas, Louisiana. Diarist Hattie Carnes, orphaned in 1863, was raised by Henry Grant DeForest and his wife Julia Weeks. She was the niece of renowned landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, who is mentioned in the diary. Text begins in Albano, Italy, on March 15, 1869. A donkey ride brought Carnes to Tusculum, where she visited the amphitheater. “You can still see the stage & the rows of seats.” Later stops include the villa of Cicero, Frascati, and San Germano. A train took her to Naples and Pompeii for a look at the artifacts. Her uncle Frederic Church joined the party in Sorrento on March 28. Other stops included Amalfi, Paestum, Naples, and Athens, with the diary discontinued when the writer was near Lucerne, Switzerland, on May 19. 16mo, contemp flexible red leather. 40 pp ink text in a good hand. ++ Atlantic voyage on the Cunard Liner RMS Tuscania, 1928. Unidentified female passenger’s diary of a voyage to Europe aboard the Tuscania in July 1928. Shipboard life was a round of meals, games, dancing, and cards. Diary is discontinued when the traveler lands at Havre. 38pp text on loose 8vo sheets, together with 7pp text of return voyage in September on SS Cameronia, and 1 color postcard. Very good.
