Lead 1880s Antique CHAUTAUQUA WOOD CASE ROLLER ORGAN
Description
SHIPPING AVAILABLE > Standing 12" tall and measuring 18 x 15" to the raised base, this Chautauqua Roller Organ is a finished wood case organette, complete with three interchangeable music rolls, typically known as "cobs" (See Images) Hand-painted on one short and one long side of the case is the name ROSA KINDABLYO, no doubt the original owner. Includes a number metal keys, which when attached, would cover the note holes. (See Images) This example was likely produced by the Autophone Co. of Ithaca NY. The company made both the Gem and Concert Roller Organ models. Both of these models were branded for the Larkin Soap Company of Buffalo, New York. The firm provided several different products as premiums with purchases of their soap products. Their "Chautauqua Roller Organ" stenciled roller organs are one of the many premiums that carried the "Chautauqua" name as well as desks, tables, chairs, lamps, etc. The soap company actively promoted the organs from 1895 to 1895. The Chautauqua Roller Organ was manufactured primarily between the 1880s and early 1900s, with its peak production around the turn of the 20th century. The Chautauqua Roller Organ gained the name as it was marketed to rural communities, often associated with the Chautauqua movement ... a popular adult education and social movement at the time, which emphasized music, culture, and education for communities outside urban centers. The instrument itself was sold widely through catalogs and dealers, bringing music into many homes before the phonograph became accessible and affordable. The Chautauqua Roller Organ was a popular hand-cranked organette manufactured around the turn of the 20th century, commonly found in American homes. These instruments used pinned rollers to play pre-set tunes, with each roller—typically made of wood and embedded with specific pin patterns—corresponding to a different melody. Rollers could easily be swapped out, allowing the owner to enjoy a variety of songs. Operating the organ requires turning the hand crank on the side, which rotates the roller and engages the internal bellows to push air through the reeds. This action produces musical notes as the pins strike designated points within the mechanism. The organ’s distinctive wood casing, visible internal gears, and roller-based design are characteristic of the Chautauqua Roller Organ, marking it as a fascinating example of early mechanical music. Before the advent of widely available phonographs, Chautauqua Roller Organs offered an affordable form of home entertainment. Today, these organettes hold historical value for collectors interested in early mechanical musical instruments. CONDITION REPORT ~ Clearly in need of restoration and repair ~ Lacking a wood panel to the top ~ Lacking glass to the top door ~ Non-Functional ~ Likely additional condition issues and elements relative to age, use and materials ~ Condition best noted by closely examining the images offered.
