Lead President Ulysses S. Grant Letter
Description
Written on the stationery of the Executive Mansion, Washington DC, and dated May 21st, 1871 is a handwritten letter to E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. of New York from the President of the United States, Ulysses S Grant. The letter thanks the company for sending a box of stereopic views of the Yosemite Valley in California. There is NO certification on the letter or signature. The letter is in nice condition and easily readable if not for President Grant's penmanship and likely the use of language at the time. The entire letter and signature are on one page of the stationery, making it excellent for display. The stationery is a folded "booklet" which measures 7-7/8" x 9.5" when folded. The left margin of the letter appears to have some kind of marking that may be a tape mark. There are old fold lines, appearing to show the letter was folded into sixths. On the back lower left corner, someone has written "Sat 10.00" in pencil. Accompanying the letter is a mount which at the top reads "Galena Illinois 1871 President U.S. Grant is pleased with a gift of stereopic views".
