(THIS LOT IS NOT AN ITEM)
The Schantz family have deep roots in Waterloo Region. In 2023 the Schantz/Russell home at 43 Schneider Avenue in Kitchener is 135 years old. We offered the accumulated contents of the attic to Gary Jantzi Auctions for resale in October.
In 1888 Tobias and Mary Schantz built an Italianate two story home on two acres on Building Lot 9 of Mary Schantz’s 1887, Survey, Lot 17 of the German Company Tract. Tobias & Mary were married in Port Elgin in 1863, they had eight children, living in Hawkesville, Conestogo and Berlin. Tobias was the grandson of Christian (River) Schantz who came to Canada as part of the Mennonite Migration in 1810. Christian built a home at Freeport in 1817 on land where Freeport Health Care Centre is located today. When the property was sold in 1853 one of his sons Benjamin Schantz moved to Port Elgin when he operated a mill and was one of the founders of the village.
In Berlin Mary Schantz bought two acres of Lot 17 G.C.T. from Samuel Schneider. They built their home the following year. In 1901 Tobias and Mary deeded their home to their fifth son Frank Abram Schantz, a clerk and eventually partner in the Lang Treacy Dry Goods Company. After his death the home was lived in by his niece Dorothy Russell a longtime kindergarten teacher who lived to 105 years and was a celebrated local artist, photographer community member. In 1994 the family home was restored by her son and daughter in law Harold & Lynne Russell.
The Russell family have, over almost 30 years, donated the contents of trunks to local museums, Schneider Haus, Waterloo Region Museum, and Parks Canada and especially the University of Waterloo Archives. The Schantz/Russell Family Papers included thousands of letters, photos, maps and ephemera which tell the history of a family in Waterloo County/Region.
In 2023 the Schantz/Russell attic contained about 15 trunks which were stored there, many over a century. Shelving, dressers, boxes and chests, decorative materials, magazines, games, embroidered doilies, etc. were indetified for sale. Dorothy Russell was a talented artist, working in oil paints, a student of popular local artist M.F. Kousal, a number of her paintings are included. She was also a dedicated photographer and some of her cameras are included.
