I know I'm calling a lot of the games in this auction rare, and they truly are. But I feel like the boy who cried wolf, because then when I come to this Matchlock game, rare doesn't seem like a strong enough word. I feel like I've worn it out. But the truth is, this game is as rare as hens' teeth. I've never seen nor heard of another one of these anywhere, and I haven't had anyone come through my warehouse that has ever heard of it.
Here is how it's described in one of the few internet mentions I found:
"Description: Match Lock, Sega, 1972. A very politically incorrect gun game where the player shoots the orientable people wearing rickshaw type hats, which move in diagonal rows. When a man is shot, he screams an electronic death squeal in an oriental manner, if you know what I mean. The Matchlock game has solidstate sound and the gun has recoil."
This one is not working. It is a project game, but appears to be complete. The cabinet is rough - it got wet on top, and maybe on bottom. And the cabinet is weak / broken in places. However, the interior components appear to have been very well preserved. I really think it should be possible to get this working based on the condition of the guts. Take a look at the pictures and video and you will see what I mean.
This came from a carnival operator who had it for at least 45 years, maybe since new. It had been in storage since about the mid 80s. Most of what I bought from him was in excellent electronic condition, but the exterior of the games were all rough. This game is no exception. Nice on the inside, rough on the outside. I'm not sure what I'd rather have in most cases, but on an EM game like this you are MUCH better off having nice electronics than cabinet.
