Lead 1967 FORD S CODE 390 BIG BLOCK GT MUSTANG FASTBACK
Description
1967 Ford Mustang GT S Code Fastback - Full ground up, nut and bolt, rotisserie build - One of one in factory specs - Factory ‘S’ code 390ci V8 - Factory four speed manual - Factory GT - Power windows - Power steering - Air conditioning - Marti report and photo documented build This 1967 Ford Mustang has been through a ground up, nut and bolt restoration with some very subtle and tasteful upgrades. The goal of the build was a nut and bolt restoration to factory specs as per the Marti report. While this car was extremely well optioned from the factory being a GT, S Code, manual, in a desirable colour combo, the decision was made to upgrade it during the resto by adding every possible factory option from 1967 as if every box was ticked on the order sheet. The car has been kept looking factory correct but with hidden upgrades to reliability, practicality, comfort, and performance so the car can be enjoyed and driven all day. This Mustang was acquired by the previous owner in 2006 in the state of Georgia. The seller at the time had apparently owned the car since the early 80’s, and it had been off the road since the late 80’s or early 90’s. After it was bought the car began its 12-year restoration journey. It was completely stripped down and disassembled to a bare shell and was then media blasted inside and out. The car was then trusted to Gary’s Body Shop in Georgia to begin the slow and detailed corrective metal work. It was decided early on that this was to be a no expense spared restoration, so even though most of the original steel was in okay shape, there was some rust and the owner wanted to ensure that this car was to never rust again. As such, new Dynacorn replacement panels were grafted in including a new one-piece floor, new rear quarters, new doors, cowl and hood. After a few years slowly perfecting and prepping the bodywork the car was finally ready to for paint. At this point the size and cost of the project overwhelmed the owner and he decided to sell it as an unfinished project in 2017. The car was purchased by the current owner on rotisserie and shipped to specialist mustang restorer “MotorCity Grind” in Detroit to complete the project, constantly working in closely with the owner’s guidance. The build was completed in 2020 and imported into Australia. Once the car was in Australia the owner has continued to make driveability improvements to this day, including adding electric power steering, crank handle operated power windows, LED head and tail lights, modern wiper motor conversion, fox suspension and commissioning Mal wood to hand rebuild the top loader. The body itself was completely media blasted to bare metal with all necessary rust repairs being performed. On a rotisserie, the bodywork was restored to factory body specs with body panels gapped. The entire body was then repainted in its factory colour of Clearwater Aqua in 2 pack. Every nut and bolt replaced with new items and all of the lights were upgraded to LED’s including headlights, tail lights and reverse lights. The weather strips and rubbers are all new as is the factory style Carline Green tint glass. The chrome, badges and exterior trim was all either refinished or replaced. To complete the look, the car sits over a set of 15x7 styled steel wheels with period look Firestone Wide Oval radials, size FR60-15, speed rated “S” including the matching spare. Finally, the car was ceramic coated for ongoing protection. Open the door and you will be greeted by an all new factory style Deluxe interior with comfort weave seat trim (usually only found on Shelby’s). The seats themselves have been upgraded to high density seat foam with new seatbacks with genuine (and near impossible to find) original and restored chrome trim. On the doors are deluxe door panels with factory style brushed aluminium and feature power windows that are operated by the original style cranks from Nu-Relics USA. Front and centre is a Cobra GT performance steeling wheel. The factory gauges have been fully restored and Shelby style Stewart Warner under dash gauges added. Up top there is an optional overhead console and all of the interior lights have been converted to LEDs including the dash lights, courtesy lights, door and map lights. The fold down rear seat has been media blasted and fully restored with all new chrome trim. The whole interior has been sound and heat insulated throughout. Keeping things comfortable is an integrated factory aircon system by Vintage Air for modern aircon performance. For tunes, the original 8 Track player has been retrofitted with FM and internal Bluetooth conversion for wireless media streaming and handsfree calls. Speakers include Focal 5 1/4 inch 2-way Kick panel speakers plus in-dash retro sound 140w speaker. The wipers have been converted from the original clunky linkages to a modern style electric cable drive system using a CAE Australian made wiper conversion kit. For safety the Deluxe Scott Drake Factory look 3-point seat belts are installed. For reliability the whole car has been fitted with a new GT wiring Harness front to back and upgraded to remote keyless entry with central locking. Inside the boot is as neat as the interior with remote electric trunk release and Ring Brothers Billet Trunk Hinges. Pop the hood and you will find the factory, S code, 390ci 4V V8 engine that has been fully rebuilt and upgraded in 2019 by well-known Detroit muscle car engine builder Ed Michael. 1967 cars do not have partial vin numbers stamped into their engine blocks and rely on date codes lining up for integrity but cannot prove original engine with any documentation as this did not exist back in the day. The block in this car is a cast C6ME engine with a production cast date code of March 1967 which is in the correct and acceptable range to be considered original for a June 1967 vehicle build date. The heads and exhaust manifold production cast dates also line up and matching dates. During the rebuild, the block was cleaned, magnafluxed and crack tested before being decked and line honed. The cylinders were bored 30 thou over with a polished crank, new cam and main bearings, reconditioned connecting rods, Comp cams Xtreme energy x262 hydraulic camshaft, Comp Cam timing chain, Diamond Forged custom pistons, Total Seal piston rings, Powerbond SS Damper and ARP hardware. The rotating assembly was fully balanced. The heads were decked and polished before receiving a custom 3 angle valve job with 428 Cobrajet Ferrea valves, Harland Sharp Roller tip Rockers and arms and a Comp Cams Spring and lifter kit. Fluids are pushed around by a new oil pump and Edelbrock Victor High performance water pump. Up top there is an Edelbrock performer intake manifold topped with a 750 Holley carb with vacuum secondaries. Fuel is supplied by an Edelbrock fuel pump and ignited through an MSD Pro Billet distributor with Blaster 2 electric ignition coil. Cooling is handled by a Cold Case Big Block aluminium stock look radiator and 7 blade 428 engine fan. Exhaust gasses are expelled through a set of FPA ceramic coated headers into a Magnaflow street series Crossmember-back dual exhaust system with twin straight thought mufflers and factory exit tips. Like every real muscle car, the engine is paired to a four-speed manual transmission. The original top loader was not performing up to standards and so a correct 1968 390 GT RUG-M2 Toploader was sourced and sent to Mal Wood in 2021 for a complete and total rebuild. The box features a new input shaft, new gears, new hub, new bearings, gaskets and shift rods. Other upgrades include a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, Mcleod Super Street Pro clutch kit and Mcleod balanced flywheel and Roller bearing clutch pedal. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a balanced tail shaft into a brand new 9” Trac-Loc Posi rear end with Nodular Iron Gear Case, Daytona Big Bearing, 31 spline axle and 3.25 final drive gears. The suspension has been fitted with brand new upper and lower control arms, Grab-A-Trak heavy duty front springs with 1” Shelby drop, new 5 leaf 1” Shelby drop leaf springs and Fox Hotchkis 1.5 Tuned adjustable performance shocks all round. The steering system didn’t escape the upgrades with a brand new Flaming River GT 16:1 ratio, needle bearing steering box, upgraded Roller bearing idler arm kit, 8 Position tilt steering column and EPAS electric power steering with override and in-dash power assist adjustment which can be switched off completely for manual steering. Stopping power is provided by factory GT Kelsey Hayes 4 spot callipers and DBA slotted brake rotors up front with factory drum brakes that were fully rebuilt in the rear. The whole under side of the car is as well finished as the top with the underbody painted in red oxide with factory style “overspray” as they would have rolled off the line from new. This 1967 Ford Mustang S Code GT Fastback is an absolute burger with the works! The car is restored to an extremely high level and although extremely well spec’d from the factory has been upgraded with almost every option you could throw at it. The car comes complete with a framed deluxe Marti report showing it’s a 1 of 1 in its original build specs as well as photos documenting its restoration process. Opportunities to purchase cars built to the quality of this don’t come along very often. Be sure to register and bid if you want to see this one parked in your garage.
