St. John's Anglican Church, Ida is pleased to offer for auction a collection of paintings created or collected by Mr. Murray Hofstetter. Murray, a long time History and Art Teacher at R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate in Oshawa, ON, always had a passion for painting. He and his late wife, Bronwen, purchased an old schoolhouse property in Ida, ON, just west of Peterborough, and used the schoolhouse as his art studio. They would eventually build a home on this property and retire here.
His collection includes 40 pieces of original artwork painted by Murray, as well as 13 pieces from other artists. His paintings depict the beautiful landscapes of Cavan and surrounding area, as well as more northerly scenery. Included in his collection are several pieces set in Northern Quebec and the settlement of Port Harrison, now called Inukjuak, where they lived for a few years. Other artists represented in the collection include Lucy Manly, Alice Duncan, Clive Powsey, Anna Syperek, and others.
June Moncreif , Murray's dear and trusted friend, has donated his collection to St. John's Anglican Church, Ida, where he and Bronwen were members for many years. Proceeds from the sale of these pieces will be donated to a church school lunch program in Belize, providing a nutritious lunch to the children of migrant workers whose families are too poor to pay for them. St. John's has been supporting this endeavour for many years thanks to the outreach of two of our church members.
Online bidding will begin April 1, 2023 and run through until 8:00pm on April 14th. Preview will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, Ida on Friday April 14th, 2023 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm to mark the close of the auction.
