During the Tsang Dynasty (618-907AD), Chinese artisans began to create bonsai landscapes in a ceramic tray. These panorama's became more realistic with the addition of rocks, structures, figurines, etc. Figures were eliminated from these artforms about 400 years ago. Although these Mudmen are more recent in their production, they are entirely hand made. The mud/clay is hand-pressed into molds and then detailed and painted. There are a number of pieces that are added to the assembly before painting and firing.
