As many of you know, one of our community's hard working young people, Jessa Howdyshell, was recently in a serious farming accident. Jessa was born and raised in Auguata county and has loved farming ever since she was small. After high school she began working part time at neighboring farms and made a name for herself as being a very hard working, dependable, reliable and passionate for every job at hand. Jessa is the type of person who would do anything that was asked of her. She cared for the livestock as if it were her very own and dreamed of having her own farm one day. You would often see Jessa driving her Dodge with her dog, Brandy, at one of the many farms she did part time work for. On the morning of August 26 Jessa had her accident and , in her words, this is what happenend " In a nushell I was out tagging calves on Wednesday morning and one momma got pretty upset with me. She was just protecting her baby so I can't fault her. Anyways she charged, flipped me twice in the air and I landed on my back/ head. As I scrambled to get up, she knocked me flat again and as best I can remember, trampled me across the back. The Lord and my army of guardian angels were surely watching out for me as I was able to crawl underneath the electric fence, walk half a mile back to my pick up, and make it to the closest neighbor for help. They immediately drove me to Sentara for a CT scan and from there I was transferred by ambulance to UVA for more scans and an MRI. UVA concluded I had a broken neck (in simple terms) and I ended up going for surgery August 27 to fuse the broken bones back together. So basically, the part of the spine that broke, burst into a ton of tiny pieces. Some of which were rubbing up against my spinal cord. The Doctors clled me a walking miracle. They still don't know how I'm not permantly paralyzed or worse... once again the Lord has His hand on me and it just wasn't my day to die. Post-op went remarkably well and I was up and walking ( a bit like a newborn calf) the next morning. I progressed so much to the point I was able to go home Slight concusion, that lovely ol' neck brace for the foreseeable future, some scrapes and bruises...but this girl is still kickin!" -Jessa Upon the scans that were taken it showed that a large mass in Jessa's chest. There was some uncertainty at first as to whether it was a hematoma from the hit or something more concerning. In the following weeks after surgery, multiple scans were performed, blood work and a biopsy was done on the mass. Jessa got the heart wrenching call on Oct.7 that her biopsy results came back positive for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Jessa has now been diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgikn's Lymphoma and has started Chemptherapy treatments at UVA. Jessa will have a long recovery but is a fighter. All proceeds from this auction will go directly to Jessa to help her cover additional medical expenses, living expenses due to her not being able to work as well as travel expenses to and from UVA. Thanks in advance for loving and supporting Jessa through these hard times.
