Description
Unique estate auction in the heart of West Knoxville. Antiques, collectibles, art, and so much more. Join us for this estate auction online now and closing on Sunday, August 26th at 2pm. Mr. & Mrs. Bird's Story: Biography for sellers Kay and Bob Bird Kay King Bird is an accomplished designer with an extensive background in textiles, merchandizing, and manufacturing. Graduating with her Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University, she continued her education with the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She designed for movies and television while working in Beverly Hills, California for such stars as Deborah Winger for the Academy Awards and Mindy's wedding dress when she married Robin Williams character Mork on their hit television sitcom. Upon her move to Richmond Virginia, Kay served as the General Manager of the retail division of Biggs Furniture, a Division of Kittinger and maker of bench-made, fine hand-crafted 18th Century reproductions. She was elected to be an associate member of the American Society of Interior Design (ASID). She chose to move from retailing to manufacturing pursuing her creative nature through the design of evening and bridal wear. Kay was distinguished as the only non-staff designer to be recognized by Pricilla of Boston and have her work placed with Pricilla's line. Deciding to transition from couture clothing; Kay created a line of totes and travel accessories that ultimately became the sole focus of her manufacturing company; The Kay King Collection. This product line was sold in every major market in North America, delivered to 46 states and 4 foreign countries. The totes and accessories were featured in exclusive shops and specialty boutiques at places such as the Greenbrier, the Homestead, Disneyland, Trimingham's Department Store in Bermuda, and throughout. Kay grew the business to the point of needing to significantly escalate the investment in The Kay King Collection if it were to compete at the next level. This came at a time when her husband was given the opportunity to follow his Fortune 50 career with an acquiring company but a move would be required. The decision was made to close Kay's factory and move with her husband to Knoxville, TN. To Kay's credit, the doors of her factory remained open until every single employee had found a new source of employment and every debt was arranged for payment. While Kay's design and business career is certainly noteworthy, her true identity is that of being a Christian. Her passion to serve God and His people through prayer and healing ministries occupy her time each and every day. Kay views her calling to be helping people come to an intimate relationship with Jesus and teaching them to know how to hear God's voice. She is an aspiring Non-fiction Christian Writer. Kay is a woman of great compassion, a teacher of the Gospel, and a spirit filled warrior for all that will reflect Jesus. Kay believes the sale of these various items from three estates will add greatly to the support of her ministry. Bob, Kay's husband of 39 years, earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing through WVU's College of Business and Economics. He was recruited by Reynolds Metals Company out of college and was under their employ until their acquisition by Alcoa, Inc. His Reynolds career included field assignments in Chicago, Charlotte, St Louis, and Los Angeles prior to being named as Corporate Director of Marketing for Aircraft, Aerospace, Defense at their World Headquarters in Richmond, VA.. Reynolds sponsored Bob's further academic study at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business Executive Program in Finance and Industrial Marketing. Bob transitioned while at Reynolds to the primary metal commodity side of the business which became his focus within Alcoa. He represented Alcoa as their North American Sales Director for continuous cast rod along with alloyed and commodity ingot. He retired from Alcoa with 33 years of tenured service. BBird Enterprises was then established as a small business private consulting organization chartered to bring his many years of corporate experience and wisdom to those who may require an extra set of eyes on their business. Like his wife, his career is not what defines him. Bob is a Christian serving to Glorify God in a multitude of ways. Post retirement, Bob leads a jobs program he helped establish over seven years ago to assist those who are unemployed or underemployed sharpen their tools to be more competitive as they seek the right fit for their next employment opportunity. He served on the Board of Deacons at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. He is a founding member and Ruling Elder of New Life Gathering, a newly planted Church in the Bearden area of Knoxville. Bob is active in Bible Study Fellowship and Links Players International. In addition to his Church, Bob has served his community holding seats on the Performing Arts Council Board and on his HOA Board. He currently serves as President of the WVU Alumni Association's Smoky Mountain Chapter. He is an active member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity's Order of the S.C. He is an avid fan of college sports. Being a native West Virginian, he is especially fond of Mountaineer football and basketball. Even with his deep WV roots, Bob always cheers for the Tennessee Volunteers… unless they are playing his Alma Mater. This auction is offered by the Birds to facilitate their goal of ministry to others. With the recent passing of Kay's Mother there was a realization that many things are kept from family estates simply because they were family items and had emotional attachments. They realized the true value was more in the memory than the item. Bob had this same experience with the loss of his Mother and recently his Brother. What once was the luxury of space in a large home became a full to the brim house that was no longer comfortable. There was always "stuff" out of place and there was no longer a place to put the "stuff". Everything being sold has a story but it's not the story that matters. It is that the person who buys these possessions will find joy, suitable use, profit, or something that meets their current need or desire. The next chapter of the story for the Birds is how their ministry will be increased as a result of this sale.
