A War of 1812 recruitment order, Harrisburg, PA, May 12, 1812. "The President of the United States having, in conformity to an act of Congress, required a draft of 14,000 men, as the quota of Penna. towards the detachment of 100,000 men…the king, over whom we had been triumphant, began an invasion of our rights and property...Remonstrance has followed remonstrance, but they have been only answered by repeated injury and new outrage..." Signed in type by Gov. Simon Snyder. 8 x 13". 2 1/2 pages, the fourth blank. Condition: Very good.

A rare Epistle "From Our Yearly Meeting held at Philadelphia, for Pennsylvania and New Jersey…" Phila.: Likely William Bradford, Jr., 1759. 7 1/2 x 13". 3 pages, the fourth blank. Splitting and separating at folds, minor stains, 2 spots with 1" old tap residue. Laid paper, crown and heraldic crest watermark. The most salient passage is on p. 2: "Many of our fellow subjects have suffered on and near our frontiers, some have been slain in battle, some killed in their houses, and some in their fields, some wounded and left in great misery, and others separated from their wives and little children, who have been carried captives among the Indians..." Condition: Very good.

A rare election broadside issued by the Union Republican County Committee "to the Patriotic Voters of Lancaster County," Christiana, October 1, 1862. 11 1/2 x 18". Some separations at folds, some slight losses including a piece at upper right corner. A well-written document decrying the state of affairs in the country and endorsing the Union candidates, in particular abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster for Congress. A quote from his recent fiery speech in Congress is printed in the first column: "...I say that I am in favor of employing slaves against their masters...I am for putting them in front of this battle. I would raise a hundred thousand of them to-morrow, and have them drilled...The flower of our people are moldering in the swamps of Virginia because we will not employ those who ought to be fighting this battle." Lincoln had issued his Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation the month before, opening the door for African-Americans to enlist in the Union Army. Stevens easily won re-election to Congress, the vote held in Penna. on Oct. 14. Condition: Very good.

The Massachusetts Magazine for Jan. 1791. 8vo. Contains a disturbing report titled "The Dying Negro" by Hector St. John Crevecoeur (1st published in his book "Letters from an American Farmer" in 1784). The slave met an awful punishment and death for killing his overseer. Condition: Very good.

An interesting lot of papers and photographs from the Heinitsh Furniture business and family, Lancaster. Includes an 1837 bank account book, misc. early handwritten poems, bills from the 1840s and 50s, two 1849 loan documents for money borrowed by John F. Heinitsh from James Buchanan (not signed by Buchanan), a large 1850 mss. account paper, billheads and other paper from the 1920s store (on 27-29 S. Queen St.), 4 photographs incl. of the store and workers, and other paper. Condition: Very good.

A series of 44 sheets printed ca. 1920s with photo reproductions of views in and around Lancaster, most with penned annotations of locations and people, including members of the Landis and Bachman families. 7 x 11", some smaller, many with two views to a sheet. Some edge chipping with losses. Condition: Good.
