The Cheney Patent Hammer was quite ingenious. Two spring-loaded ball bearings were designed to capture nail heads. The nails were started into the wood by taking the first hammer-swing backwards. This is a fairly rare version of the 904 Tool chest. The early raised heart logo on the brass plate would suggest a year of 1922. This plane has had work done to it by my Tool & Die guy. He cleaned up a lot of screw threads and in the case of the iron-hold-down screw, he had to insert a new stud into the cap. Some of the screws and washers are modern replacements that can be changed out with older ones. Still, it is in reasonably good shape for being 150 years old. This is a very clean example of a Millers Falls corner brace. Back in the days when tradespersons were installing/retrofitting plumbing and electrical. Lots of overhead work... must have had arms like a gorilla. This item is ELLIGIBLE FOR SHIPPING.

The CS88 was a limited-edition plane developed by Martin Calvert and Mel Stevens. The concept began with the amalgamation of a heavier-bodied Record 4 ½ utilizing a Norris-style Adjuster. Other features included a thicker Japanese iron; a Stay-Set gunmetal lever; superior frog seating and finish. Wood bits were of East Indian rosewood. They went with a great looking Preston-green to offset the gunmetal lever. What fun it must have been in the development room! The Calvert-Steven had the shortest production period of any Record plane (1988-October, 1990). It is said there were only about one thousand made. They were numbered on the casting just under the rear tote: this one being 972 (see picture). Do some searching and you will discover how infrequently these come up. After tearing it down a bit, I have to say: This plane is an absolute beast. It must weigh about double the weight of a normal 4 1/2.
