If you collected coins in the 1950s or 1960s, you dreamed of finding a 1916-D dime...or a 1909-S VDB or 1914-D Lincoln cent, or 1932-D or 1932-S quarter...in circualtion. And I certainly did have that dream as a young pre-teen coin collector.The 1916-D is rare in all grades. Walter Breen has written that mint production of dimes in Denver in 1916 was stopped so that personnel could devote full time to making quarters. The original mintage of 264,000 for the 1916-D is by far the lowest of the Mercury dime series. For comparision, the mintage of the 1916 was 22,180,080 and the mintage for the 1916-S was 10,450,000. The 1915 Panama Pacific Half Dollar represented only the second commemorative silver half dollar issued by the United States Mint. Although this would later become the most frequent denomination for classic commemorative coins, the earlier issues took place across a range of denominations. The program of five commemorative coins issued for the Panama Pacific International Exposition included two versions of a $50 gold piece, a gold quarter eagle, and a gold dollar.The half dollar featured the full length figure of the allegorical Columbia with rays of the sun and the Golden Gate in the background. Her arms are outstretched to scatter fruits and flowers. A cherub appears to her right holding a cornucopia. The obverse includes the “S” mint mark, as the coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint facility.The reverse of the Panama Pacific Exposition Half Dollar features an American Eagle with wings outstretched, perched on a shield. An oak branch and olive branch appears to each side to represent strength and peace. The words “In God We Trust” appear near the eagle’s head, representing the motto’s first appearance on a commemorative coin. The obverse of the coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, and the reverse was designed by George T. It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Everybody in Hawaii was sitting on pins and needles. Were the Japanese preparing a massive invasion of the islands? If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $1 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

***Auction Highlight*** PCGS LEGENDARY 1652 Pine Tree Shilling Small Planchet Graded vf20 By PCGS. One of the first colonies set up in what later became this country, was the Massachusetts Bay Colony. As the population grew, the need for coinage or some circulating medium grew also. In the 1630s a loose barter system prevailed, any "hard currency" (copper, silver or gold) was siphoned off back to Britain through both taxes and by selling the colonists goods at inflated prices. Purchases were made by trading goods for goods: furs, fish, grain, musket balls, wampum, shells etc…. The only coins in circulation in Massachusetts at the time were outdated English farthings and presumably Spanish silver, which would have been used by passing merchant ships and buccaneers stopping by Boston as a port of call. King Charles I of England was executed, and his forces were defeated by 1651, thus the royal regulations governing the Colony were no longer relevant. The General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony authorized John Hull and Robert Saunderson to strike much needed silver in the denominations of XII Pence or Shilling, VI Pence and III Pence in mid 1652. The first coinage was the NE issues, followed a year later by the Willow Tree issues, later Oak Tree Issues and finally the various Pine Tree issues. The date 1652 was continuously used for decades, as the Colony had no technical authority to strike its own coins. Later, when King Charles II restored order in England, he allowed the coinage to continue, after paying the King's taxes.Many of the large size Oak Tree and Pine Tree pieces were bent as the 1692 Salem witch trials unfolded, as the local citizens believed that carrying a bent silver coin would offer protection from witches. For this reason, Hull made the planchets smaller, but thicker, to make the coins harder to bend, and harder to "clip" silver off of by shaving the edges, spending the lighter weight coin, and keeping the silver shavings for recoining.Massachusetts silver coins are among the most important colonial issues, as they were the first silver coins struck in the continental United States, they circulated widely, including Canada and even caused one of the first American uprisings against Britain, when Hulls coinage came into question by Royal authorities. A new coining press specifically designed for half dollar production saw its first use in March 1839 at the New Orleans Mint. The Southern Mint was established by Act of Congress on March 3, 1835, although its impressive, Greek Revival style building took almost three years for completion. A limited number of 1838-O Bust half dollars were struck for presentation -- perhaps 10 coins -- on a dollar-sized coin press that was ill-suited for the task. Those few 1838-O dated coins represent the first half dollars struck as part of the federal series, although they were not shown as part of the Mint Director's report -- likely because they were struck in early 1839. It is thought another 10 specimen 1838-O coins were struck sometime later in 1839.The reverse from the initial 1838-dated mintage remained in service to strike 1839-O dated coins, when the die was paired with one of four obverse dies. The GR-1 variety was by far the most successful of the New Orleans Mint's half dollar efforts, A total of five die pairs were needed to accomplish the full 1839-O mintage.1839 was the final year for Bust design coinage, which gave way to Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design. Very Cool 1872 $50 South Carolina, Columbia Obsolete Currency Note SCCR-8 George Washinton Graded cu66 EPQ By PMG. These Very Cool Notes Are Nearly 150 Years Old . They were issued as an “IOU” to investors of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company, toward a tri-state railroad link-up that would facilitate trade in South Carolina. Enormous amounts of capital were necessary for railroad construction, some from private sources, but much of it came from state and local government funding. Each $50 note features a central portrait of George Washington that’s actually the same image we see on our current $1 bill—only much more detailed. On either side of this portrait are vignettes referring to South Carolina’s agricultural heritage. On the right is an image of a farm hand carrying a basket of cotton while with others can be seen picking cotton in the background. On the left is an image of a wagon full of cotton bales being pulled by horses who seem to be struggling under its weight. All of these designs are extraordinarily intricate and are a testament to the skill used to create the designs printed on this note!Taken To The Cleaners By The State Of South Carolina!When the news broke that the state of South Carolina needed millions of dollars to finance the reconstruction of the railroad, it seemed like a no-lose deal. Railroads were in their heyday, and the state guaranteed repayment. Famed industrialist Edward P. Wesley coughed up the dough and received $1,000,000 in notes designed like intricately engraved currency. But, in 1873, South Carolina reneged, leaving Wesley with the unredeemable notes. Wesley fought the state in the courts but lost. He was left with nothing but the notes.

Civil War Era Boston, Hartford & Erie Railroad $35 Note Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. One hundred and fifty years ago, in June 1863, the Boston, Hartford & Erie Railroad was incorporated with the goal of forming a gateway to western markets for New England goods and of bringing coal from Pennsylvania into New England by way of Newburgh, New York, to Waterbury, Connecticut, and beyond. Its lofty goal disintegrated when it came under the control of “as ribald a bunch of crooks as railroad history has ever produced,” wrote D.W. McLaughlin in his article “Poughkeepsie Gateway,” for the October 1968 issue of the Bulletin of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. The railroad ran into a myriad of troubles, including the realization that building an east-west route across Connecticut would involve navigating the state’s ridge lines, the problem of aligning with the non-standard gauge of track on the Erie Railroad (the western line it would hook up with once the railroad cars crossed the Hudson River), and the lack of a bridge for which to travel over the river. That apparently did not stop the railroad’s promoters from selling stock in the line, which they proceeded to mercilessly raid and pillage. The legislature of the state of Massachusetts was persuaded to give $3,000,000 in grants, odd in that the bulk of the railroad didn’t actually travel in that state, as it went into Connecticut. By the time the graft caught up with all the players, in 1870, the railroad was in bankruptcy with a mere $10.00 left in its accounts, Massachusetts was out all of the money it invested, and very little actual railroad track was ever laid. The remaining assets were transferred to the receivers of the New York & New England Railroad, who rerouted the railroad line from New York City to Boston and eventually became part of the New Haven Railroad system.

363-364 AD Ancient Rome Jovian AE3 Bronze Grades xf. Jovian was Roman emperor from June 363 to February 364. As part of the imperial bodyguard, he accompanied Emperor Julian on his campaign against the Sasanian Empire. Julian was killed in battle, and the exhausted and ill-provisioned army declared Jovian his successor. Unable to cross the Tigris, Jovian extricated his troops from enemy territory by making peace with the Sasanids on humiliating terms. He spent the rest of his eight-month reign traveling back to Constantinople.
