The contents of the Anchorage are being sold for the benefit of the living Estate of Celia Rollinson Meekins while the 218 year old Ancestral home known as Meekins Anchorage will be donated to the Roanoke Island Historical Association in accordance with the wishes of her late husband, Roger P. Meekins. Meekins Anchorage is filled with the evidence of all 5 Generations of previous occupants but it is extensively filled with the personal effects of both Roger & D. Victor Meekins who were both newspaper men & photographers with a nice selection of local photography, books & ephemera from the early 19thC to the 1990's. There is also a large wood working shop as well as a John Deere 140 Lawn Tractor and a large selection of Juniper Wood. There are Tools from the 19thC to present day, Fishing & Nautical Items, a Library of Books, Stoneware Pottery, Furniture from every decade from the past 150 years, Militaria from the Civil War to the Vietnam War, typical estate items & tons of local history. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Several years ago Roger Meekins donated most of his & his fathers photographic collection and negatives to the Outer Banks History Center. What we are offering for sale in this auction are D.V. & Roger Meekins personal and original copies of photos etc. We would like to thank The Roanoke Island Historical Association, the Outer Banks History Center & Island Farm as well as Mary Blanche Meekins for their insight ,assistance & guidance with historical photos and identifications. While we are bound by contract to sell the contents of this historical estate It is our hope that all of the historical items specific to this home/area will be purchased by one of the local historical societies and preserved for generations to come. D. Victor Meekins (1897-1964) was a Roanoke Island resident, photographer, Dare County Sheriff, Founder of (The Dare County Times), editor of the Coastland Times newspaper, real estate speculator, and prominent Outer Banks citizen during the first half of the 20th century. Roger Preston Meekins was born in (1930-2018) at Meekins Anchorage, on Roanoke Island to D. Victor Meekins & Catherine Deaton Meekins. His father (D.V.) created & ran the local newspaper & by the age of 7, Roger began his own newspaper, The Sunnyside Press. By the age of 17 he had his private pilot’s license and he often flew with his father up-and-down the Outer Banks taking photos along the way. In 1954 he was called to active duty with USAF, where he spent the next 20 years seeing brief action during the vietnam war. In the 1980's Roger started a succesful cottage furniture business.

Lot includes 2 Ducks, both missing heads. One is marked "Mirlo Beach Lodge" and one marked on the fabric from the commercial maker. Solid condition, ribbed canvas body with a broken bill. Marked Mirlo Beach Lodge. D.V Meekins remodeled the lodge in the 1950s while developing the Mirlo Beach Subdivision. Decoy was found in one of the out buildings. Attached for reference is a photo of Mirlo lodge. (not included)

1976 hardback copy with the original hard sleeve showing minor edge wear. The Book itself is in excellent condition with a personalized signature in the front of the book from Aycock Brown to Roger and Eleanor Meekins. 9 inches x 11 1/2 inches.

D. V. Meekins was the original creator of the Dare County Times newspaper which later became the Coastland Times. This is a laminated copy of the 1st edition of that paper dated Friday, July 5, 1935. From his personal papers. All three pages measure 17 1/2 inches across X 22 inches tall the advertising and learn is impressive.

This interesting looking slightly heavy handmade duck decoy has the following inscription carved on the bottom "Nouvia Ottavia, Italian Bark, 1876. Leland and Tea." for Leland Tillett & his brother Tedrick. Upon a brief search of the name of the ship an article from the Island Free Press indicates that in 1876 the Nuova Ottavia, an Italian Bark, wrecked on shoals off Currituck Beach with loss of life to the ships crew and the life saving crew. This duck features what appears to be two brass spikes and a wooden peg in the top of the body. The head and body were carved separately with a visible seam line. Unfortunately, we have no additional information regarding this duck. However, the report also indicated that by morning the rep had broken up into countless pieces which were strewn across the beach. This report coupled with the Mr. Meekins wood working history presents the idea that the duck could have been carved by Mr. Meekins out of salvaged shipwreck parts. Although the actual artist of the Decoy is Unknown, it does appear that the decoy was made of shipwreck parts. What a unique story! Overall size 8 1/2 inches tall X 12 1/2 inches across

Three pieces total, including a vintage Pyrex, friendship pattern lasagna dish, measuring 9 inches deep X 15 inches across. Lot also includes two Fire King lusterware dishes, one divided and one with a lid. No obvious chips or cracks to report.

This print is after a painting by artist John Willis, which was a tribute to pilot officer, John Gillespie Mcagee, RCF, the author of the High Flight poem which was written shortly before being killed in action on December 11, 1941 at 19 years old. 1988 copyright. 19 3/4 inches across X 31 3/4 inches tall.

In February of 1914 the Helen H. Benedict, a three masted, 697 ton schooner ran aground in thick fog in South Nags Head Beach. D.V. Meekins was 17 at the time and shot the only known photograph of the wreck. This is the actual photograph that D.V. Meekins took (from his collection) which was later published in several periodicals. Included is an additional unpublished photo of friends climbing on the Helen Benedict. This photo is not identified though a similar photo is identified in another album listed separately. Also included are some of the postcard prints are from the main photo. Approx size of the largest photo is 5" X 7"

This is a nice looking vintage still life on canvas featuring flowers in a vase. Mounted in a metal silver colored frame. Light scuffs and very minor wear to the finish. The reverse indicates Hodges motel Buxton, North Carolina. Reversed also Sands cottage. Overall size 18 inches across X 22 inches tall.

All three are in solid condition with the wood carved elephant having a tusk which has broken off. The same elephant also has heavy wear to the finish. The other two elephants appear to be molded from a composition material. Largest measures 11 inches tall X 10 inches deep.

This signed 1971 print of the blue angels was presented to major Roger Meagans of the US Air Force for truly outstanding assistance and hospitality. Turn of the century album with a handful of photos which are captioned "on board the Helen Benedict 1914", "remains of schooner LURA MAR wrecked on Roanoke Island, 1904, “US Coast Guard station at pea Island, North Carolina 1913. “ In 1913 this was still the life saving station though in 1915 it became the Coast Guard station. Album also includes four partially identified family photos and a photo of a ship in Manteo Harbor. Each photo measures approximately 2 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches. Photos are all in reasonable condition with varying degrees of Edgeware and light fading.

This Civil War era Naval Artillery Shell Box was found in the attic of Meekins Anchorage with no contents or surrounding documentation. With the proximity of the home to the Civil War Naval Battles that ensued, it is probable to assume that it came from one of the ships or was perhaps even left behind by occupying troops. It was most likely scavenged by a family member during or after the local conflict. It is overall in solid condition with no structural concerns. The Paint is fair and the Stencil is fairly sharp, likely from years of being stored in the attic. The construction does include square nails and hand cut dove tails. Marked on the Exterior IX in. Shell, 10 Sec. (fuse) ORD 1861. Similar Examples have been seen on the market but the provenance of this piece being found in an 1805 home in the midst of the Battle of Roanoke Island makes this an Important Piece of Local History that deserves to be recognized and on display. Overall Size 10 ¾” Deep X 10 ¾” Across X 12 ½” Tall. Found tucked away in the attic by the auctioneer.

This daguerreotype photo was found in storage in the attic of Meekins Anchorage while the framed portrait was found in the attic of one of the outbuildings. This Lady is undoubtedly a member of the Meekins Family and the only person that lines up in the family timeline to have had a Ca.1850's Daguerreotype Photo taken is Esther (Easther) Mann Meekins 1787-1861. Esther Mann Meekins was the Daughter of John Mann (of Manns Harbor) and Meekins Anchorage was built for her by John Mann as a Wedding Present for Esther & Daniel Meekins. Also included in this lot is an antique Hand Written Account og the Family Up Until the 1820's. The largest Portrait Measures 12 1/2" X 14 1/2" IT IS OUR HOPE THAT THIS PHOTO WILL BE PURCHASED BY (OR DONATED TO) THE ROANOKE ISLAND HISTORICAL ASSOC. SO IT CAN REMAIN IN THE FAMILY HOMESTEAD. We have also been in contact with the Outer Banks History Center & Other Local Preservationists.

(13) Photos Total, Tintypes & CDV's. The album itslef is in poor condition though some of the photos display very well. The 1st photo in the album has a gem tintype labeled as John Meekins. There are CDV's of Styrons & in the back there are two gem tintypes labeled as Jethro & Anna Midgett. The back of the Midgett photos has been backed with 1875 Fish Receipts! Circa 1941–1945. Original case. In working condition when stored in the attic years ago. The Fairchild K20 was an aerial photography camera used during World War Two. Many bomber planes carried these cameras, as it enabled pilots to take low altitude images, such as of potential enemy missile launch sites or targets. Overall size in the original box 15 1/2 inches across X11 and 1/2 inches tall. THIS CAMERA WAS USED BY ROGER MEEKINS TO TAKE MOST OF HIS AERIAL PHOTOS OF THE BEACH.

Pine Haven appears to have been one of the Meekins Family houses located down the street in Sunnyside. Overall in good condition and likely dating for the last quarter of the 20th century. 17 inches tall X 23 inches across.

Lot includes 3 Original Aerial photo of the Nags Head Casino along with old Coastand Times newspapers dating to the 1940's to the 1960's. Some with Advertising for the Casino and MANY Other Local Establishments, some which are still around. Photos measure, 2 1/2" X 3 1/2". Coastland Times with light age wear.

Both in solid functional condition with the slightly larger chair being the older chair. The Rattan back has losses and where. Seat has been replaced. Wind Chimes from the Porch of Meekins Anchorage These wind chimes have been sitting on the back porch for several years soaking up the ambience . Unmarked with a lightly aged finish. Guaranteed to sound wonderful! 8 inches X 27 inches

All in good condition with no obvious issues to report. Plate measures 10 inches across. Memorial stands 8 inches tall. Bronze medallion coin is one and 3/4 inches across.

When new the spool held 600 feet of rope. We estimate that there are approximately 200+ feet of rope left on the spool. Please use your knowledge as an estimate of length.
