Lead Lisa Cowan "Memorial Day in the Flint Hills"
Description
"From 1998 to 2009, I ran a program for high school kids called Run Across Kansas. We would run in a relay fashion from the CO border to Topeka in four days. Along the way, we were hosted by KS VFWs, and we heard many stories from WWII through the present. On the fourth day, we would run through the Flint Hills. It was always strikingly beautiful to see the various cemeteries all dressed up to honor the veterans. The memory is etched in my mind, and I often think of the beauty and am thankful for it." Latex on Canvas. Framed, 18H x 24W. Lisa Cowan is a painter living in Leawood, KS. Her landscapes and portraits are created through an exploration of materials and methods that call viewers to focus their attention on the how and the what of that which is being portrayed. With painterly applications ranging from paint rollers and hardware store paint swatches to expressive brush strokes that build three-dimensional surfaces, her paintings work to suggest particular moods that match their methodologies. Largely focused on the landscapes and faces of people she knows well, her work illuminates the powerful presence of those familiar with her life. As a self-trained artist, Lisa focuses primarily on color and emotion to generate powerful memories in those who observe her work.
