Ambrose Swasey (December 19, 1846 – June 15, 1937) was an American mechanical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, manager, astronomer, and philanthropist. With Worcester R. Warner he co-founded the Warner & Swasey Company.
The letter was written to James Dodge's wife. James Dodge was the son of Mary Mapes Dodge, the author of HANS BRICKER and she was the recognized as a leader in juvenile literature for almost a third of the nineteenth century. She was friends with Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Bret Harte, John Hay, Charles Dudley Warner, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward, and Rudyard Kipling.
