Klimt is renowned for his paintings, murals, and sketches. His primary subject was the female body and his works are recognized by a clear femininity and often erotic nature. Along with his portraits, Klimt also enjoyed painting landscapes. Klimt had many influences on his work but was most influenced by Japanese art and its methods. As he began to cultivate a more personal style, his work was seen as more and more controversial, culminating when his paintings he completed around 1900 for the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna were criticized as pornographic. As a result of this criticism he decided to no longer accept public commissions, but then found new success with the paintings during his "golden phase", many of which used gold leaf.
