Description
Medium: Watercolor on paper. Edition: Unique, Original work of art. Condition: Very good. Signature: lower right side. Size: visible paper size approx 8 x 11.5 inches. New Frame: 15 x 18 inches. This is a rare and amazing original watercolor painting, in the manner of and attributed to the world renowned and historic contemporary pop-artist, Andy Warhol. This artwork has the Warhol Estate stamp & the Warhol Foundation stamp on the verso, which always adds to the Provenance of an original piece of art. Warhol was an amazingly talented artist and like many artists of his era, his artwork was misunderstood by too many people. Typically, people either like Warhol's art or they don't. However, those who didn't appreciate his artistry & brilliance, never truly understood the simplicity of his message displayed in all of his artwork. In 1963, the art critic Gene Swenson interviewed Warhol. Warhol made the statement, “I think everybody should like everybody.” Swenson asked, “Is that what Pop Art is all about?” Warhol responded saying, “Yes, it's all about liking things.” In that response, Warhol gave the world his simple message about his artwork. The image that initially gave notoriety to Warhol's art was his painting of the Campbell's Soup Can in the early 1960's. He was about 34 years old. During that time (1960s), Campbells soup was a huge selling item and in the cupboard of nearly every kitchen in America. His simple message remained consistent throughout his life as an artist. Simple realistic images that the masses of people would recognize and could relate to in some manner. Color and a slight degree of abstract expression without confusion, was part of Warhol's simple style of his artwork. Everyone could relate to the image of the Campbells Soup Can, or the image of a woman's High Heel shoe, Mickey Mouse, Marilyn Monroe, the Coke Cola bottle, Red Lips, and so many others. However, his brilliance extended beyond the image itself. His first image of a Cow (early 1960s) also made people think of milk, which also was in every refrigerator in every household in America. Warhol, by using simple images, led people to use their imagination in its simplest form. Quite brilliant. This particular piece being auctioned today is part of several images that Warhol colored differently, but make no mistake, each piece is uniquely rare and valuable. Warhol used same images in many of his pieces, but instead of calling them a series, such as Marilyn Monroe, High Heel Shoes, and many others, they were all collections. Pop art is defined as the visual art movement and this artwork exemplifies that definition. All of Warhol images from the 1960s, portray the simple things that people like. Yes, it's all about liking things. ~~ Andy Warhol. This beautiful and rare piece is a keepsake for generations. Provenance: Private Physician’s Estate. It's believed, but unconfirmed that the physician was one of Warhol's personal doctors. The piece was then gifted to another NY physician who examined Warhol as a private consultation. The present owner is the son of that physician. For all the legions of Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck fans out there, enjoy bidding and owning this fabulous original watercolor, attributed to the legendary contemporary artist, Andy Warhol. The kids will love it, as adults appreciate memorable history of wonderful moments in time. Good luck and congratulations to the winning bidder!
