Lakeside Classics 1903-1999 Nearly Straight Run. A rare long run of 97 volumes of the well-regarded Lakeside Classics, reprinting important works of Americana, published in Chicago by Donnelley. Lacks only the second book (Inaugural Addresses Washington to Lincoln) from the very hard to find, and valuable, earliest volumes. These are from a single owner, family collection (the Walter Swoope estate). Most of the books were collected by them as subscribers, from volume I on, and most books are in very good to fine condition. 26 are in their original glassine dust wrappers. Also includes yearly letters from the press for many volumes, and occasionally presentation cards. #14, the Life of Black Hawk, has minor stains inside the front, small tear to the half title and one margin of the title; #17, A Woman's Story, has a bookplate of an earlier owner; #21, First Settlers on the Oregon, has call #s on the verso of the title page; #22 Fur Hunters of the West, has an inscription at the front scratched out, spine tear and edge wear; #25, Death Valley, has bookplate of an earlier owner; #32, Zenas Leonard, has slight stains on front endpapers; #33, Kit Carson, has splitting inside the front joint; #34, True Picture of Emigration, has damping to bottom edge. Of the 97 volumes, these are the only ones with any mentionable issues, but even these are otherwise very good.
