Lead EMMETT KELLY QUILT - READ DESCRIPTION BELOW
Description
Emmett Kelly Quilt This beautiful hand-made quilt is a one-of-a-kind folk-art treasure memorializing America's most celebrated clown, Emmett Kelly, Senior (1898-1979). Kelly created his sad-faced character on his artist's drawing board during the Great Depression and brought Weary Willie to life as a circus clown in 1932. He delighted generations of audiences in the circus ring, on television and other entertainment stages. His unique and poignant pantomime routines reflected human foibles, dreams, and the events of the times. This extraordinary cotton quilt measures 79" x 90". It was designed and hand-sewn by residents of the Correctional Center at Licking, MO., who craft quilts for non-profit groups in southwest Missouri. The proceeds from this auction will provide a scholarship to a Fine Arts student at Houston High School. Last year's scholarship winners are now studying art and music at two prominent universities. Emmett Kelly is Houston, Missouri's "Hometown Hero," as he spent his youth there on a farm. The Annual Emmett Kelly Day Celebration will be held April 27, 2024.
