135) PROTOTYPE 10 GOWN WITH CHINCHILLA STOLE • Originally from the collection of Charlotte Johnson and featured on the cover of FDQ Summer/Autumn 2009 is this exquisite piece of Barbie history I have only seen in the magazine, never in person • Straight from the Mattel archives, this never-produced hand beaded Evening Gown was part of the personal collection of Charlotte Johnson, Barbie’s first fashion designer • The dress was designed during the mid-1960’s, as part of the Haute Couture 1600 series of outfits. Ultimately, the dress was shelved due to the cost prohibitive beading process • In 1967, the Mattel factory in Japan produced a less costly version gown for the Japanese market. We have the produced gown – see item #103 in this auction • This documented one of a kind stole was also part of Charlotte Johnson’s collection and I received the fashion with the stole. The stole was designed along with other furs, possibly candidates for the 1964 Sears Mink stole. The chinchilla was ultimately passed over for the famous Mink Stole.
