Lead Muel Zaragoza hand painted pitcher
Description
In 1048 its pieces came from Zaragoza and were exported to Naples in the 15th century. By the 16th century, almost all the inhabitants of the town were employed in the ceramics industry, which created pieces which can be seen in collections such as in the National Archaeological Museum. From the 17th century, this pottery with its metallic or gold highlights (the most beautiful and popular) began to disappear, although Muel continued to produce pottery with its own operators, kilns and workshops. Throughout the 19th century, this industry continued its decline, although the last traditional workshop, run by the Soler family, was still producing beautiful pieces in the 20th century. Today the Muel ceramics industry (with six workshops producing traditional pottery) is currently undergoing a period of resurgence. This pottery features a predominance of blue tones –unlike the pieces produced in other areas of Aragon– and continues in the footsteps of the master potters of bygone days
