To call the Shelby GT500 Mustang an American muscle car legend is an understatement. These cars are among some of the most desirable and collectable muscle cars on the planet. This 1969 Genuine Shelby GT500 is right up there with the best of them. This car, which has an interesting history, underwent a full nut and bolt rotisserie restoration here in Australia to the highest standard.
As documented in the Shelby American Register, Chassis number 9F02480533 was a part of a batch of nine Shelby GT500’s that were built as export models and send to be sold in Tokyo, Japan. The car was sold new through Marubeni Motors KK in Tokyo in June of 1969. The Marti Report with the car shows that the Shelby was originally Pastel Grey with black upholstery and powered by the infamous 428ci Ram Air V8, paired with a C6 automatic transmission. In addition to the standard Shelby equipment the car was optionally fitted with Selectair air conditioning (the compressor to which has since been removed but the mount remains). Power front disc brakes, power steering, tinted glass, an AM radio, tacho and tripmeter. As per correspondence with the SAAC the car was owned by the Aporo Company of Saitamo, Japan, then Hiroaki Suzuki and is understood to have spent around 17 years on display in a museum before being imported to Australia in July, 2004. After purchasing the GT500 at auction, which by now was painted Electric Blue, the new Australian owner decided that the car should be completely restored.
A comprehensive, ground up rotisserie rebuild followed with the body stripped back to bare metal, any necessary repairs undertaken and repainted in its factory colour. A fresh interior was installed from top to bottom. The suspension, brakes and steering components were all completely rebuilt. The running gear was in relatively sound condition and required little more than an overhaul. During the restoration an additional stamp was discovered on the shock tower which appears to be a stock number from Marubeni Motors (other similar stampings have been found on other Shelbys from the same batch). The speedo had also been changed to kilometres per hour as per Japanese regulations. The car has also been lowered slightly using new springs all round to give it a better stance with the original restored items included in the sale. The finish on the restored car is as good as you will see, the floor pans have no deadener so you can see the quality of the finish and there are factory style paint dabs and delivery marking like you would expect from a concours style vehicle.
This is a rare opportunity to own one of the best restored examples of a genuine Shelby GT500 Mustang in existence. These cars are something of legend status and we think with this car’s interesting history and quality of restoration, it would be a hot ticket investment grade muscle car for anyone to put into their collection.
