This 1968 Plymouth Road Runner has been through an extensive rebuild into a tough pro-touring style street car. The car was sourced and built in the US by Jon Henson who was engaged by Currie Diffs to build the car to be used on the “Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour 2018”. The car was stripped back to a shell and rebuilt using many new parts and with a bunch of companies coming on board to assist with the built.
Under the bonnet is a built Mopar 383ci V8 featuring Edelbrock E Street alloy heads and topped with a FiTech 6 pack fuel injection system, with hand-held digital dash and tuner. Expelling gasses is a set of long tube Heddman Headers with full twin 3” stainless steel exhaust with cross over and Gibson stainless steel mufflers dumping just before the diff. The engine is tough with a large cam and makes plenty of power to have fun in a street car. Keeping temps in check is a Champion alloy radiator with new dual electric thermo fans and custom shroud.
The engine is paired to a built Passon Performance overdrive 4-speed manual transmission with billet splines/ components, new clutch (recently fitted), and an inland Empire Driveline drive shaft. Feeding power to the rear wheels is a Currie Diff’s Dana 60 with 3.54 gears, Eaton True Trac centre with 35 spline axles.
In a true pro-touring style, the car needed to be able to stop and steer well, not just be fun in a straight line. The steering was upgraded with an Ididit tilt steering column, all new steering shafts, new rag joint, borgeson power steering box and new pump. The suspensions features Hotchkis fully adjustable tubular upper control arms, steering arms, tie rods and heavy-duty torsion bars. QA1 tubular lower control arms were also used with all new ball joints throughout. Billet Hotchkis fully adjustable shocks were used front & rear, with heavy duty lowered leaf springs and hangers in the rear. Stopping power is provided by 12.25” Wilwood disc brakes with 6 piston callipers front and rear, billet wildwood master cylinder and new brake lines and fuel lines throughout.
The body was given a once over and fully repainted in a crispy, clean white while the car was apart. While it is well presented all round, it was always built to bang through gears rather than sit at car shows and does lack some paint quality in the detailed areas like door jambs. For a tough look, a Hemi style fiberglass bonnet was fitted with Eddie Motorsport powder coated billet hinges and billet bonnet pins. The high beam lights were covered in a yellow tint and the rear factory boot chrome trim was replaced with custom adjustable spoiler. New bumpers were fitted front and rear along with new rain drip gutters, and new wheel arch mouldings. The look outside is finished with a set of Circle Racing customs, 2-piece polished Magnum 500’s, measuring 18”x 8.5” up front and 18”x10” in the rear with Falken 245/40/18 & 295/40/18 tyres respectively.
The inside wasn’t neglected receiving a full custom TMI interior, with new rear seat, front buckets, door panels, parcel shelf, kick panels, centre console, dash pad & steering wheel. There is also a new headliner, carpets, armrests, door handles and doorsill plates. Poking its head up from the floor is a factory style Hurst pistol grip manual shifter. Keeping an eye on the vital signs is a full aftermarket Dakota Digital VHX dash. A Kicker audio system, digital head unit, amp, sub and speakers keep tunes bumping. The cabin temps are kept in check with a new ‘Vintage Air’ air conditioning system. The entire floor, door skins, and boot have been lined with Thermo-tec sound deadener. The wiring loom has been replaced with a full Painless wiring loom from front to rear along with new LED headlights and push button start.
This Road Runner was built to be loud, roudy and a bunch of fun! It looks the part in every way, has a bunch of great upgrades with high end parts and inspires you to get it out and bang through the gears.
