Omer "Salty" Seamon (1911-1997) was an American painter known for his folksy watercolors and landscapes of Indiana and the Midwest. His work can be found in galleries and homes across the United States. He was born Denzil Omer Seamon in Gibson County, Indiana, to parents Louis and Estel Seamon. He began drawing at an early age, sketching pictures to send along with letters his parents sent to an older brother fighting in World War I. After serving in World War II, Seamon devoted his time to becoming a full-time freelance artist. He and his wife Marjorie "Polly" Kress and stepson Edgar Mechling moved to a home near Rosedale, Indiana, where Seamon had a painting studio. He became well known in the Wabash Valley area. In addition to selling paintings directly to members of the community, Seamon annually created arts for the Forrest Sherer Agency Christmas cards. His work was even available on personal checks from Terre Haute First National Bank. Seamon often painted the local people and places he saw around him, from covered bridges and rivers to specific locales including the Vigo County Courthouse, the Indiana Theatre and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, all in Vigo County, Indiana. In 1980 Seamon was named a "Sagamore of the Wabash" by Indiana governor Otis Bowen. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has shown a particular appreciation for Seamon, granting him an honorary doctorate in 1979 and creating a collection of many of his works. She was educated at Indiana University and studied portraiture in New York and Paris at the American Academy. She would go on to spend the next 20 years in Brown County, during which time she painted more than 1,000 canvases, averaging 150 per year. She and her husband purchased and renovated the former cabin of artist Adolf Shulz. In Nashville she studied under artists Marie Goth, Derk Smit, George Jo Mess, and Homer Davisson and received private instruction from Goth, Davisson, Marilyn Bendell, and Leonard Richmond. Gordon also maintained a home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where she would paint sea scenes during the winter. Throughout her career she also performed live painting demonstrations to artist groups in surrounding communities. Gordon had many prominent memberships, exhibitions, and accolades. Since 1959, she was an active member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and was a member of its board of directors. She was also a member of: the Indiana Artist Club; Hoosier Salon; Indiana Heritage Arts, Inc.; the Federation of Art Clubs. Peter Bruning was born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He loved to draw and play the piano as a child and was influenced by the fine art museums and concert halls in Amsterdam. After graduation from the Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he chose a teaching career and completed his doctorate in Germanic studies with minor studies in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He also studied art in Amsterdam, and then, after WW2, in Bern, Switzerland and in Paris, France. He came to Terre Haute as a visiting instructor at Indiana State in 1950 where he met his future wife Margaret Jones, an art major. Peter taught German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, University of California Berkley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Peter accepted a position in the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State in Terre Haute where he taught until his retirement in 1990, all while pursuing his art career. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Peter was intrigued by the subtle nuances of color, shape and feelings evoked by the juxtaposition of land, sky, and water. He was drawn to visit and paint at many coastal locations, such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod. Many of the landscapes and cityscapes he painted were also the subjects of earlier artists, but Peter made a consistent effort to view and depict those subjects from different, unexpected, and novel vantage points. Curry Bohm, a photographer, painter, and printmaker whose artistic career spanned five decades, was an integral part of the Chicago art scene in the 1920s and a very prominent part of the second generation of the Brown County, Indiana art colony from his first visit in 1920 until his death, serving as a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and helping to transform Brown County into one of the nation's outstanding art colonies. From the late 1910s to 1932 Bohm lived and worked primarily in Chicago and Curry became a prominent part of the city's artistic community. Bohm's affiliation with Indiana began around 1920 when he first visited Brown County. He exhibited at the Hoosier Art Gallery in Chicago and showed regularly at the Hoosier Salon in both Chicago and Indianapolis from 1928 until his death. Over the years Bohm won numerous awards from the Hoosier Salon including the Edward Rector Memorial, the Lawrence A. Downs Prize, Daughters of Indiana of Chicago Award, and the Summer Landscape Prize. He also won prizes from the Indiana Artists' Club and the Brown County Art Gallery. After visiting Nashville annually for several years, the Bohms moved there in 1932 and eventually became permanent residents. Bohm was a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and served as president, vice-president, and director of the Brown County Art Guild. During his years in Nashville, Bohm was also a mentor and teacher to many aspiring painters. Bohm exhibited regularly throughout lifetime at the Palette & Chisel Club, the Hoosier Salon and various galleries in Illinois, the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists' Club, Brown County Artists Guild, and galleries in Indiana, at the North Shore Art Association and Rockport Art Association in Massachusetts, and elsewhere. His most prestigious accolade came from the selection of his painting The Grey Blanket to represent the state of Indiana in the show of Contemporary Art of the United States from the collection of International Business Machines at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1940. After graduation from the Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he chose a teaching career and completed his doctorate in Germanic studies with minor studies in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He also studied art in Amsterdam, and then, after WW2, in Bern, Switzerland and in Paris, France. He came to Terre Haute as a visiting instructor at Indiana State in 1950 where he met his future wife Margaret Jones, an art major. Peter taught German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, University of California Berkley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Peter accepted a position in the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State in Terre Haute where he taught until his retirement in 1990, all while pursuing his art career. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Peter was intrigued by the subtle nuances of color, shape and feelings evoked by the juxtaposition of land, sky, and water. He was drawn to visit and paint at many coastal locations, such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod. Many of the landscapes and cityscapes he painted were also the subjects of earlier artists, but Peter made a consistent effort to view and depict those subjects from different, unexpected, and novel vantage points. Dorothy Susan Doughty was a British sculptor and potter, much of whose best work was produced for Royal Worcester, specializing in representations of birds. Born in Italy, she was the elder daughter of poet, writer, and traveler Charles Montagu Doughty. Doughty was educated at Eastbourne School of Art, where she became a keen naturalist and ornithologist. Her sister, Frederica "Freda" Gertrude was also a sculptor and potter, including working with her sister for Royal Worcester. Doughty is mostly known for her collection of porcelain American birds. She modeled a series of thirty-six pairs and three individual models of American birds, which were designed between 1933 and 1960. They were produced by Royal Worcester, a British porcelain firm. An entire series of her porcelain birds are exhibited at the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas and The Art Collection at Hebrew Home at Riverdale in Riverdale, New York, and at Audubon House of Pelican Island Audubon Society in Vero Beach, Florida. He loved to draw and play the piano as a child and was influenced by the fine art museums and concert halls in Amsterdam. After graduation from the Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he chose a teaching career and completed his doctorate in Germanic studies with minor studies in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He also studied art in Amsterdam, and then, after WW2, in Bern, Switzerland and in Paris, France. He came to Terre Haute as a visiting instructor at Indiana State in 1950 where he met his future wife Margaret Jones, an art major. Peter taught German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, University of California Berkley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Peter accepted a position in the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State in Terre Haute where he taught until his retirement in 1990, all while pursuing his art career. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Peter was intrigued by the subtle nuances of color, shape and feelings evoked by the juxtaposition of land, sky, and water. He was drawn to visit and paint at many coastal locations, such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod. Many of the landscapes and cityscapes he painted were also the subjects of earlier artists, but Peter made a consistent effort to view and depict those subjects from different, unexpected, and novel vantage points. Peter Bruning was born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He loved to draw and play the piano as a child and was influenced by the fine art museums and concert halls in Amsterdam. After graduation from the Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he chose a teaching career and completed his doctorate in Germanic studies with minor studies in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He also studied art in Amsterdam, and then, after WW2, in Bern, Switzerland and in Paris, France. He came to Terre Haute as a visiting instructor at Indiana State in 1950 where he met his future wife Margaret Jones, an art major. Peter taught German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, University of California Berkley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Peter accepted a position in the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State in Terre Haute where he taught until his retirement in 1990, all while pursuing his art career. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Peter was intrigued by the subtle nuances of color, shape and feelings evoked by the juxtaposition of land, sky, and water. He was drawn to visit and paint at many coastal locations, such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod. Many of the landscapes and cityscapes he painted were also the subjects of earlier artists, but Peter made a consistent effort to view and depict those subjects from different, unexpected, and novel vantage points. George Kenneth Shopen was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1902, the son of a watchmaker. At age 18 he became a staff writer for Elgin Daily News, but soon enrolled as an English major at the University of Illinois, where he received his B.A. in 1925. He went on to teach part time at Chicago's Latin School for Boys, which led to his position as an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1931 to 1945. The U.S. War Department hired Shopen as an artist and teacher in France and Germany in 1945. He became a Professor of Art at the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1946. Shopen worked as an art critic for the Chicago Daily News between 1953 and 1956. During the early years of television, he appeared on the "Impact" show, discussing the latest developments in art. Shopen exhibited at A Century of Progress Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) in 1933 and at the International Watercolor Exhibition, AIC in 1935. He exhibited yearly at the AIC Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture between 1931 and1949 and had a two person show at the Art Institute's Room of Chicago Art: ÒPaintings by Harry Mintz and Kenneth Shopen, Dec.7, 1944-Jan.21, 1945. Shopen retired to Norwich, Vermont, where he died on November 13, 1967. Louis Icart was born in the culturally rich city of Toulouse, home to many prominent artists and writers and a source of inspiration and encouragement for the artist. In 1907 Icart moved to Paris and began his studies in painting, drawing, and printmaking. By the early 1920s, when Art Deco had taken hold of the Paris scene, Icart's images of women - glamorous, sensuous, and often imbued with a sense of humor - reached their height of brilliance and tapped the market of the immensely popular image of female youth. Yet, while his images captured this modern fervor, they also retained the classical line and form of the eighteenth-century masters he'd studied, such as Jean Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher, and Jean Honore Fragonard, as well as echoing the age of Impressionism. In fact, Icart lived outside the fashionable artistic movements of the time and was not completely sympathetic to contemporary art. He did not embrace the saturated market of fashion-plate, emotionless figures in fine clothing, but began to turn toward the coquettish, playful, expressive muse in waifish, clinging drapery. Despite his hesitations, his work surged in popularity at the end of the twenties, in Europe and to even greater acclaim in America. Paul Marie Louis Pierre Richer was a French anatomist, physiologist, sculptor, medallist, and anatomical artist. He was a professor of artistic anatomy at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as a member of the Académie Nationale de Medecine. Richer was an assistant to Jean-Martin Charcot at the Salpetriere, and from 1882 to 1896 was chief of the laboratory at the Salpetriere Hospital. With Charcot he performed research into hysteria and epilepsy, and performed studies of medicine and its relationship to art. In 1903, Richer was appointed to the chair of artistic anatomy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and in 1907-08 was president of the French Society for the History of Medicine. His sculptures can be found in museums throughout Europe, including the Musee d'Orsay. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He maintained a shop and residence from 1915 - 1922 in Montreal and was a part of the Arts and Crafts movement in Canada. With the onset of cheap and rapid methods of machine manufacture in the applied arts, quick profits quickly outweighed the respect and demand for the craftsman-artist. Beau refused to rely on machines and worked in the tradition of the early European metalsmiths. A characteristic feature of his works is the combination of metals of contrasting colors, such as employing brass for the body of an object and trimming it with decorative bands of red copper. Curry Bohm, a photographer, painter, and printmaker whose artistic career spanned five decades, was an integral part of the Chicago art scene in the 1920s and a very prominent part of the second generation of the Brown County, Indiana art colony from his first visit in 1920 until his death, serving as a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and helping to transform Brown County into one of the nation's outstanding art colonies. From the late 1910s to 1932 Bohm lived and worked primarily in Chicago and Curry became a prominent part of the city's artistic community. Bohm's affiliation with Indiana began around 1920 when he first visited Brown County. He exhibited at the Hoosier Art Gallery in Chicago and showed regularly at the Hoosier Salon in both Chicago and Indianapolis from 1928 until his death. Over the years Bohm won numerous awards from the Hoosier Salon including the Edward Rector Memorial, the Lawrence A. Downs Prize, Daughters of Indiana of Chicago Award, and the Summer Landscape Prize. He also won prizes from the Indiana Artists' Club and the Brown County Art Gallery. After visiting Nashville annually for several years, the Bohms moved there in 1932 and eventually became permanent residents. Bohm was a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association and served as president, vice-president, and director of the Brown County Art Guild. During his years in Nashville, Bohm was also a mentor and teacher to many aspiring painters. Bohm exhibited regularly throughout lifetime at the Palette & Chisel Club, the Hoosier Salon and various galleries in Illinois, the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists' Club, Brown County Artists Guild, and galleries in Indiana, at the North Shore Art Association and Rockport Art Association in Massachusetts, and elsewhere. His most prestigious accolade came from the selection of his painting The Grey Blanket to represent the state of Indiana in the show of Contemporary Art of the United States from the collection of International Business Machines at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1940. He loved to draw and play the piano as a child and was influenced by the fine art museums and concert halls in Amsterdam. After graduation from the Montessori High School in Amsterdam, he chose a teaching career and completed his doctorate in Germanic studies with minor studies in art history and sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 1949. He also studied art in Amsterdam, and then, after WW2, in Bern, Switzerland and in Paris, France. He came to Terre Haute as a visiting instructor at Indiana State in 1950 where he met his future wife Margaret Jones, an art major. Peter taught German and Dutch languages at Indiana University Bloomington, University of California Berkley, and German Language and Literature at Rice University Houston, where he became a U.S. citizen in 1955. In 1956, Peter accepted a position in the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State in Terre Haute where he taught until his retirement in 1990, all while pursuing his art career. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Peter was intrigued by the subtle nuances of color, shape and feelings evoked by the juxtaposition of land, sky, and water. He was drawn to visit and paint at many coastal locations, such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod. Many of the landscapes and cityscapes he painted were also the subjects of earlier artists, but Peter made a consistent effort to view and depict those subjects from different, unexpected, and novel vantage points.
