A hand crafted mountain dulcimer made by master craftsman Kurt Simerman. It has a fancy moon and stars design. Labeled inside Kurt Simerman 2005 #771. Beautiful condition. This is a rare opportunity to own a Kurt Simerman professional performance model dulcimer, his top of the line model. This is a high end professional grade instrument. The sound is bigger and brighter than most dulcimers available today. Plays well with bar chords. If you know Kurt’s history, he was a premier dulcimer builder, died in 2007, and made about 850 dulcimers. From Kurt’s website (now defunct): "The excellence built into Simerman Mountain Dulcimers are the result of continual refinement and development to meet the demanding needs of veteran dulcimer players and performers. The Simerman Mountain Dulcimer designs create a blend of balanced tone and optimum sound projection. Situated in Amelia, Ohio, and in existence until his death in 2007, it is apparent from the design and workmanship of this instrument that the man was a thoughtful innovator and a highly-skilled woodworker. This unique harp is constructed with a solid mahogany back, solid cherry rims, and what appears to be a laminate birch top. The 17 chord bars, buttons, and the chord bar holders are of cherry.

This is a rare Commemorative Edition "Dulci-Harp" built by the late George Orthey. It was made in memory of the first Autoharp recording, "The Titanic", recorded in September of 1924 by Ernest "Pop" Stoneman. Ernest Stoneman made the first recording with an autoharp on “The Titanic” in 1924. It has a Mountain Laurel championship 2002 plaque on it. On the back it is signed "Orthey Dulci-Harp Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman 1893-1968 Commemorative" and is signed underneath "By George". A rare Presnell artisan crafted mountain dulcimer. Labeled inside: The Presnells, Edd, Nettie & Baxter. Dated 1971. No. 795. From Avery county North Carolina. 35" long As pictured. Edd Presnell Info: Edd Presnell was raised in a musical family and community near Beech Mountain. The area was home to storytellers, ballad singers, banjo pickers, instrument builders, and toy makers. He was particularly interested in woodworking. He first heard a dulcimer when his future wife, Nettie Hicks, came by with an instrument her father, Ben, built. “I was 15 or 16,” Presnell recalled, “and Nettie brought the dulcimer over and played it.” With help from his future father-in-law, Presnell made his first dulcimer in 1936. Between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s, Presnell made more than 1,100 dulcimers. He and Nettie received the Brown-Hudson Folklore Award in 1974 for dulcimer making and woodcarving. In addition to making dulcimers, the Presnells hand-carved animals from wood, and they traveled around the region to fairs and festivals to sell their work, including at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. Presnell had a strong work ethic. “We’ve been through every age,” he said in a 1970s interview. “The Stone Age, the Iron Age, the Machine Age, the Atomic Age put together, only to find ourselves smack in the Money Age. The Money Age. It’s got to where a fellow won’t speak no more than twelve words to you unless there’s money in it. Me, I work because I like to work.” Edd Presnell’s instruments are still found in the area and coveted by dulcimer enthusiasts and folklorists around the globe. He helped establish the Beech Mountain craft and instrument-building tradition.

A handcrafted and custom mountain dulcimer with dolphin cutout sound holes and inlaid sailing ship on back. Inlaid mother of pearl shells on fretboard. Just a gorgeous piece! Made by Diamond Designs #3861, July 1994, Manitou Beach. Signed Richard and Denise Wilson. 35" x 6.5" x 3" About Diamond Designs Dulcimers: Richard was a skilled carpenter but had to find a new career after the early 70s US housing slump. His parents got him interested in the dulcimer and after building a kit, he and his wife decided to make their own. Early on, they had to choose between buying a sofa for their apartment and a bandsaw. They chose the latter, converting the living room into a workshop and living in the bedroom! Richard specialised in the acoustics and the construction, while his wife did the ornamentation (inlays and soundholes). Decorations included mother-of-pearl unicorns, sailboats and birds; soundholes ranged from hearts, seagulls to cherries. He estimated that each dulcimer took from 13 to 150 hours to make. Between 1974 and 1985 they claimed to have made over 2000 instruments, traveling from art fair to art fair across the USA.

Looks to be in pretty good condition for its age. About S.S. Stewart: New York City jobber, Buegeleisen & Jacobson, acquired the "S. S. Stewart" tradename from Keen-O-Phone in Aug. 1914 and copyrighted the S. S. Stewart name in Dec. 1914. In Oct. 1915 Buegeleisen & Jacobson bought the entire S. S. Stewart factory from Keen-O-Phone and the factory appears to have finished some orders then closed down shortly thereafter. This all occurred before the banjo uke was invented. Thereafter, Buegeleisen & Jacobson bought their banjos (and banjo ukes) for the jobber firm from many established banjo makers from 1914 up to the 1940's and used the S. S. Stewart name as their flagship brand. Some makers of Buegeleisen & Jacobson S. S. Stewart branded banjos can be identified by the banjo's build characteristics like S. S. Stewart branded banjos from Puntolillo, Slingerland and Gibson. The maker of other B&J Stewart branded banjos cannot be positively identified but there is no limit to the the guesses.

A rare "Plickett" vintage dulcimer made by Tut Taylor. Marked Taylor & Taylor on back side. Has printed graphics on both sides. This is not a hollow instrument but a solid plank of wood with a round hollowed out back. Very interesting set up. Comes with green soft-sided carry case. I have provided some information about Tut Taylor and his folk instruments that were featured on the Hee-Haw show in the 1970s. The Plickett is very rare. I didn't see another picture of one but I did find a photo of the music book for a Plickett. (Please note, this book is not included; but only pictured for reference.) Taylor played banjo and mandolin as a child, and began playing dobro at age 14, learning to use the instrument with a distinctive flat-picking style. Later in the 1960s, he played with the Dixie Gentlemen and in John Hartford's Aero-Plain band. Taylor became a local Nashville, Tennessee fixture. In 1970, he co-founded the instrument shop GTR there, soon after releasing another solo album. He also co-founded the Old Time Pickin' Parlor, a Nashville venue noted for performances of old-time music, as well as Tut Taylor's General Store. A rare folk art hand crafted mountain dulcimer with fancy woodwork details and sound holes. Labeled inside "Made by John Stees (in his 60th year, 1998)". A gorgeous handcrafted floor harp made by William Rees. Brass plaque on front reads "Especially made for Paula C. Acconcia by Willaim Rees". Also includes paper label on inside of body. Comes with several extra strings and soft case. To buy one of his harps on his website will run you about $5800.00. As pictured. Beautiful condition! At that time he was living in California, teaching high school science, gigging with a band on weekends and starting a family. Building stringed instruments was something he did as a hobby and to add some income. Everything he built was made in a little corner of his garage next to the washing machine. Years passed. His reputation and family grew. When he met his current wife, Pamela, he was living between Oakhurst, California and the southern gates of Yosemite National Park. He had the Sierra National Forest, literally, in his backyard and a waterfall just across the road. It was pretty idyllic. But Pamela had figured out that building instruments was bringing in more income than teaching so in 1992 William and Pamela formed Wm. Rees Instruments and William became a full-time luthier. Then, in 1996, fifteen year-old Garen, William's youngest son, joined William and started doing harp ornamentation. William and Pamela also added an employee, Rebecca Spellman, and a lutherie apprentice, the wonderful Jeff Lewis. The business grew dramatically. By 1999 William and Pamela knew they needed to relocate outside of (expensive) California in order to grow the business further so they moved, along with Garen and Bryant (William's oldest son, who worked for the business for a couple of years), to Rising Sun, Indiana. They bought a 7000 square foot building, which was part manufacturing space and part retail space. The part retail, part manufacturing space was built in 1881 and the Rees' had the building completely rehabbed. They moved in June of 2000. The business quintupled in size and by 2003, when William introduced his newest creation, the Harpsicle® Harp, to the world, things really took off. Now Rees Concert Line Harps and Harpsicle® Harps have spread around the world and our little harp lutherie just keeps chugging away.
