Looking for a delightful, adventurous pony with a hint of spunk? Meet Mocha!
Age: Approximately 15 years
Height: 13.2hh
Breed: Welsh x Stock Horse
Health: Up to date with Hendra, hooves, and worming.
Rider Experience: Mocha needs an experienced rider to help him stay calm during his occasional anxious moments.
Background: Mocha was previously used for jumping and sporting, but we've been focusing on slowing things down and relaxing. He’s enjoyed lots of trail rides and paddock training sessions. He is in his element on bush trail rides and is fine going out on his own, leaving his paddock buddy behind. He’s also participated in the Agnes Water Active Riders club days. While he has done some cattle work with a previous owner, he gets a little intimidated by them (though he hasn’t done a lot with cattle).
Mocha's Highlights:
Hooves: Easy to trim; never required shoes.
Traffic: Trucks, motorbikes, cars, and trailers don’t bother him at all. He’s road-ready in Agnes Water.
Dogs: Not phased by dogs.
Clipping: While I haven’t clipped his body, he’s fine with the noise and sensation of clippers. Bridle path clipping is a breeze.
Grooming: Mocha adores being groomed and pampered.
Worming: I’ve been teaching him to take a syringe filled with molasses water, and he literally takes the syringe out of my hand. Worming is a breeze because of this.
Flappy Things: Tarps, umbrellas, and flags are no big deal for Mocha.
Water: He loves splashing through water! Riding him through puddles after rain is pure fun. He’s been to the beach, swam in the mouth of Baffle Creek, and ridden into the water at the beach. He’s initially a little hesitant to go into the whitewash but quickly becomes happy to be in it.
Leg Aids: Mocha can side pass, turn on the forehand, turn on the hindquarters, and back up with ease. His leg aids aren’t totally pretty yet, but he’s come a long way from a pony that didn’t like legs being put on him.
Tricks: Can do one and two-legged bows, and smile.
Vices: He’s never bolted, attempted to pigroot, buck, or reared.
Mocha's Quirks:
Tie Up: Doesn’t pull back but sometimes paws if he can’t see his mate.
Catching: Can be stand-offish with strangers, but once he knows you, he'll come right up.
Feeding: Great with other horses but can get bossy over his food. Respectful of humans.
Floating: Most of the time, he self-loads and walks on without issue. Occasionally, he needs a bit more time to process it. Once in the float, he can either be totally calm and amazing or might paw if anxious. I’ve found that food and a friend work well to keep him calm. We also work on floating alone.
His Downfalls:
Insecurity: Can get anxious in certain situations, such as if other horses canter off and he feels left behind. He is happy to lead everyone out on a trail ride but isn’t great in big groups of horses. He can also be wary of ‘unusual’ things, like people walking down the road. He needs someone with experience to help work through his anxiety and de-escalate him before it becomes a problem.
Food-Oriented: Not really a downfall, but he is greedy. I’ve had to teach him not to gulp down treats. He can be quite funny to watch as he works out that he won’t get a treat until his lips stop moving. I try not to let kids or inexperienced people feed him as he might mistake a little finger for a carrot. He can also be bossy with other horses in the paddock over feeding, so I separate them as needed. If you leave anything accessible, he will find and eat it.
If you’re looking for a pony with personality, potential, and a love for water, Mocha might just be the perfect match for you. He’s got a lot of love to give and plenty of adventures left to share.
