Biography from Medicine Man: "Henry Balink's artistic training was in the classical Barbizon school of tight brushwork and a gray-brown palette. The intense colors of the Southwest landscape inspired him to brighten his palette. His excellent background as a skilled draftsman prepared him for the subject matter of the American Indian portraits of over sixty-three tribes that he painted. In 1927 Henry Balink was commissioned by the Marland Museum in Ponca City to paint portraits of Oklahoma's Indian chiefs. Balink's vibrant portraits of the Indians were highly successful, so much so that the jealous members of the Taos Society of Artist tried to have Balink deported, accusing him of espionage. In the 1930s Henry Balink taught art and sculpture at the Santa Fe Indian School. After the second world war, he trained George Phippen and advised Dwight D. Eisenhower on his beginning painting efforts. Henry Balink invented a new type of crayon and worked on perfecting a duo tone etching technique that he had begun learning while he was at the Royal Academie. He also carved fine furniture as well as creating beautiful frames which were sold with most of Balink's paintings. Many of these works hang in the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Henry Balink died in Santa Fe in 1963."

Fancy Bridle & Breast collar has 10 silver drops, silver covered horn, swells & cantle cover. The Maker is either Don Ricardo or George Gratz. The cantle, pommel and the horn are all bound in sterling silver decorated with intricate engraving and appliques, including gold/bronze mounted horse heads. The seat and fenders are hand tooled leather with desert rose motif. Sterling covered breast plate, bridle, bit and reins complete the ensemble. Includes a custom black, beige and red corona. Includes provenance packet and materials: an autographed photo of Leo Carrillo, Brian Lebel catalog, an article on the saddle, and numerous other items. Custom ordered in 1971 and completed in 1972 - handmade serial # 82 (approx 350 guitars were built) Modern Series # 2 Sitka Spruce top, figured mahogany back and sides, three piece neck, offset bridge pins, elaborate peghead inlay, large volute neck with inset Spertzel tuning machines, triple bound and double bound sound hole in ebony, double bound binding, strap peg matches the center line binding. Made in an old schoolhouse in Longmont, Colorado, by expert craftsman Monty Novotny, Reb Bennett and Bernie Nettersheim (N.B.N.) who produced exceptional guitars under the NBN name until 1976. One of the first small builders of the time to really take off, NBN produced original, unique guitars that are extremely well-built, NBN was a company making and repairing guitars, banjos, and other stringed instruments in the late 1960's - 1976. Some amazing guitarists which bought and played their instruments. (Leo Kottke, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Peter Yarrow, Steven Stills ++ ) George Gruhn wrote very highly of these guitars in a "Frets Magazine" article dated November of 1987. Includes hard case, two original NBN hangtags, and some 1960's- 70's strings, the original invoice from 8/24/1971 (Cost was $478.95) and two letters from Reb Bennett, one is an update 3/16/72 updating the progress and outlining some of the delays.
