Estimate: 400 – 4000 Tanner, Henry Schenck. GEORGIA AND ALABAMA, BY H. S. TANNER. Philadelphia: Tanner, 1823. 27.75" x 21.75 (borders), 30.75" x 23.75" (sheet.) Hand-colored by county. From Tanner's celebrated first edition American Atlas. An interesting and attractive map, with a large area along the border of the two states designated as Cherokee and Creek Indian territory. The map is current to 1822, with the inclusion of Bibb, Crawford, DeKalb and Pike counties in Georgia. Condition: Edges with some toning and some short closed tears and small chips, clean split along most of center fold. Map is mounted to an archival thin board with a very light adhesive probably made for this purpose; much (but not all) of the map is adhered to the board (lightly adhered, it appears) and we believe the map could probably be removed from this surface without damage (by someone familiar with this style of mounting.) Accompanied by a simple wooden frame and matting (removed here for the purposes of inspection), both of which may be sent along with the map to the winning bidder if so requested (shipping will cost additional if frame and glass included.)

Condition: Covers a bit faded and with a few minor spots, page-ends with some light spots or speckles, contents excellent overall with little to no evidence of having been read (two leaves remaining unopened), some very light/minor foxing in a few places, section near end with light and faded water-staining to lower corner, pastedowns with a bit of bubbling (see photos), overall Very Good.

Includes half-title, letterpress title in red and black, and engraved portrait to title verso. Skillfully rebacked in period style. Full calf. **** FIRST EDITION of this extensive compilation of scientific instruments, mechanical technology, and physical curiosities. The work includes the famous 1654 experiments with vacuums by Otto von Guericke, the first description of a universal joint and gear teeth, Boyle's experiments on air pressure, and more. Condition: Binding with minimal wear, the spine restoration is among the most skilled we've encountered. Some foxing in various places throughout, one folding plate with short closed tear, an attractive example overall.

Estimate: 350 – 3500 Kircher, Athanasius. ARS MAGNA SCIENDI. Amsterdam: Janssonius van Waesberge, 1669. Folio, 14.75" x 9.5". Text in two parts with continuous pagination. [16], 482, [10] pp., with engraved portrait, two additional engraved titles, engraved philosophical tree plate, 5 folding (or double-page in one instance) letterpress tables, and 2 engraved volvelles tipped in at pages 13 and 171 (note the volvelle tipped here at 171 is supposed to tipped in one page over on page 173.) With numerous woodcut diagrams in-text. Period calf boards expertly rebacked with original spine laid on. *** FIRST EDITION of this influential work by Kircher. The work "... represents the seventeenth-century search for a universal language that would allow scientists and philosophers to describe and circumscribe all knowledge into a unified system" (Merrill 22-23). Condition: Repair to title verso and two other similar marginal paper repairs, old water-staining in places throughout, light to moderate foxing, toning and similar typical blemishes throughout.

Estimate: 70 – 700 "Masonry / A Soul in Symbolism." Author unknown, apparently unpublished. Circa 1890. 12mo album with manuscript in ink. In limp morocco covers, inner cover with small stationer's label of Hall and English Stationers of Birmingham. 106 numbered pages (the main work), followed by three blank pages (though numbered 107-109), and then six pages of closing remarks (pages numbered 110-115.) Appears complete. A very unique manuscript. The 6 pages of closing remarks (which follow the larger work) suggest that this was a lecture, as the author thanks his audience for their "attendance here this evening." We find no printed version of the present work. This appears to be a final or near final draft, with only a few instances of corrections to the contents. A former Mason who examined the present manuscript remarked that it appears to be addressing "members of the Masonic order and appears to be an impassioned plea for a return to an older form of esoteric Freemasonry and away from the more modern social aspects of the group. That has been a point of contention within Freemasonry for the last few hundred years.... " He further noted that the contents contain various "references to higher degree’s, so the author must have been higher up within the group... some of the language reminds me of the writings of Arthur Edward Waite, an early masonic scholar." Offered here as-is, worthy of further research. Condition: Spine and edges with light wear, slight loss to spine-ends, contents clean, Very Good.

Estimate: 200 – 2000 An extensive German manuscript related to medical alchemy. Circa mid-17th century with some later additions. 7.25" x 6". Early full sheep. Approximately 650 pages present, though the page numbering (around 1000) suggests this was likely bound with sections discarded. Text in German and Latin, includes some material on the plague. An extensive manuscript worthy of further research. Condition: Binding intact but rather worn, chipped, spine panel detached and laid in. Contents with various stains in places, water-staining in places (mostly marginal and faded), many margins with finger-soiling or similar. Refer to photos, as-is.

Estimate: 40 – 400 [Lisbon]: Na Officina de Miguel Rodrigues, 1752. "Alvara, em que determina a forma para os pagamentos dos Contratos Reaes das Minas." Folio, 1 sheet. Tipped into modern wrapper. Decree related to a new system of foundry houses for smelting gold and introducing penalties for people removing gold dust and gold bars not cast by the state from the mining zone. Condition: Upper left with chip, else Good.

[4], 136 leaves, with numerous woodcuts, title printed in red and black within woodcut border. Bound in 19th c. 1/2 calf, blue specked page-ends. Rarely seen at auction. Condition: Three leaves (2 at front, and final leaf) with old paper reinforcement and occasional smaller paper repairs to some corners (repairing minor worm damage), title soiled, four leaves near front with large water-stains and other smaller faded water-stains in places throughout (mostly to front and rear), some early inscriptions to a couple of leaves (extensive notes to final leaf recto), offered as-is.

Estimate: 800 – 8000 CORDIALE QUATTUOR NOVISSIMORUM. Cologne: Heinrich Quentell, 1492. 7.75" x 5.25". 39 (of 42) leaves, wanting final blank and leaves g3 and g4 at end, which are often not included and the loss of which does not cause noticeable disruption to the text (see GW 7509.) This copy with a few leaves rubricated in red. Bound in later thin boards, covered with an incunable leaf. Very scarce incunable edition of this medieval treatise on the "last four things" (i.e. death, judgement, Hell, Heaven.) The work has been ascribed to Gerhard van de Vliederhoven and Dionysius Carthausian. The woodcut present on the title leaf, a well-known Quentell woodcut, depicts St. Gregory instructing two scholars. This woodcut was used by Quentell between 1491 and 1495. Very scarce. The last auction appearance we trace for this edition in RBH is from 1996, and that copy was lacking the title (and its woodcut) and also was apparently without leaves g3 and g4, as seen here and as seen in the digitalized copy available online. HC 5707; GW 7509; ISTC ic00897000; Goff C897; BMC I, 277. Condition: Water-staining throughout, a few marginal paper repairs (including to title), final leaf mounted to stub, some soiling/staining in places, one leaf with small hole to margin (no loss), as-is.

With engraved portrait frontis, [8], 402, [4], 486, 111 pp. Bound in period mottled calf with title on label in gilt. **** THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, including first printings of The Playhouse to be Let, Law Against Lovers, News from Plymouth, The Fair Favourite, The Distresses, and The Siege. Davenant's esteem for William Shakespeare is evident, as he freely adapted Shakespeare's works for new audiences. The present copy contains an interesting manuscript marginal note at the beginning of "The Law Against Lovers," stating that this play was "most feloniously borrowed in many places word for word from Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing." Condition: Bookplate of Christopher Geest to inner front board, binding is sound though there is a 4" crack to the lower front hinge and some other minor wear, upper panel of spine expertly restored. Contents are remarkably clean overall, some light foxing or very minor soiling is seen in limited places, but overall a very nice, clean, crisp copy.

With four large woodcut printer's devices (title, colophon, and two others), and woodcut portrait to divisional title. Bound in early full limp vellum. This is a combined edition of Doni's 1552 Mondi and 1553 Inferni, containing dialogues on imaginary worlds, hells, and even a utopian society inspired by Sir Thomas More. Condition: Title a bit toned, occasional minor stains though mostly clean, some worming in places throughout (mostly very small, occasionally shaving a few letters), one leaf with marginal chip (no loss of text.) As-is.

The work was aimed at effeminate members of the French court of Henri III. Condition: Outer margins of first 6 leaves chipped, first and leaves few leaves a bit soiled, occasional intermittent toning, a few minor stains in place, mostly clean. Boards with chips, rebacked. As-is.

Condition: A nice copy overall with mostly minor imperfections. Hinges are cracked but boards intact, slight loss/wear to spine-ends, edge-toning to boards and light wear to extremities. Some light foxing or similar minor stains in places throughout, one leaf in second volume with old paper repair to lower margin (and accompanying stain, see photo), volume three one leaf with 2.5" closed tear (no loss of text.)

With 13 tipped in color plates, 2 plates in black and white, and other illustrations in-text. Original cloth with silk ties. ONE OF 750 OF THE LARGE PAPER EDITION, SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM. Condition: Covers with some light dust-soiling, rear board with red damp-stain, endpapers a bit soiled or stained, final text leaf with light toning, contents excellent otherwise, clean internally.

Estimate: 200 – 2000 Castro, Guillen de. LAS MOCEDADES DEL CID. Valencia: e la Imprenta de Joseph y Tomas de Orga, 1796 (colophon.) Caption title. 8.75" x 6.15". 2 parts in 1, disbound. 36; 36 pp. An important piece of Spanish literature by Guillen de Castro (1559-1631) and considered by many to be his finest. The first two editions appeared in 1618 ad 1621, and both are incredibly scarce. The present was issued with other "Comedia Famosa" to be collected and later bound into larger volumes. This copy is very well preserved, with contents unopened. Condition: Very Good, an unopened copy, a couple of pages with some very, very light foxing, and leaf with edges a bit frayed. An excellent example.

Estimate: 100 – 1000 Oakley, Violet. LAW TRIUMPHANT. [N.p. but Philadelphia], [privately printed by Violet Oakley], [1932.] #37 of 300 copies, signed by Oakley on the limitation page. Folio, 15.5" x 11.25". In leather folio with copper-gilt clasps, with text volume and plates folder laid in, as issued. All 71 collotype plates are present and tipped onto bifolia over printed captions and plate numbers, plates are laid in printed folders, and those folders are all housed together in one large "Plates" folder. The text volume is complete with 114 pp. of text printed in red and black. Oakley was a groundbreaking female muralist. She was a self-appointed ambassador to the League of Nations from 1926 to 1929. She took up residence in Geneva and attended the 8th, 9th and 10th Assemblies of the League, where she made portraits of the delegates which form a large part of the present work. The present is a history of international law and a tribute to the League of Nations, illustrated with her murals from the Supreme Court Room and numerous portraits of delegates from the League of Nations. As stated on the colophon, the plates were done by the house of Max Jaffe of Vienna. Oakley was assisted by Harvey Hopkins Dunn for the typography, and the text was printed under the direction of Joseph Tatum of Philadelphia. The covers were done by Alfred Smith and Company of Philadelphia, and the metal clasps of copper-gilt done by Douglas Gilchrist. Condition: Folio with boards detached and spine portion mostly absent, a few of the tipped in plates have detached and a few plates with corners creased. Boards a bit dry and dusty and would benefit from restoration. Paper folders with some toning and light dust-soiling, contents clean overall.

Estimate: 100 – 1000 Oakley, Violet. THE HOLY EXPERIMENT: A MESSAGE TO THE WORLD FROM PENNSYLVANIA. SERIES OF MURAL PAINTINGS BY VIOLET OAKLEY… Philadelphia, 1922. Elephant folio (22.5" x 15".) Text printed in red and black after Oakley's calligraphy, complete with 22 tipped-in illuminated color plates (including some folding) by Oakley reproducing her murals in the Pennsylvania State Capitol. Contents loose as issued in 7 fascicles, housed within the original gilt-stamped morocco covers, lettered and decorated in gilt, with brass clasps. ***** NUMBER 21 OF 500 COPIES, printed on San Marco Paper imported from Italy. The production of the present work was overseen by Oakley and took over a decade to prepare. Oakley was the first American woman to receive a public mural commission as well as the first woman to receive a Gold Medal of Honor from the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. Condition: Leather boards with chipping and surface cracking, spine portion with some portions chipped and panel loose at ends, pastedowns with some spotting and staining (or just discoloration?), contents mostly quite clean with some light foxing in places. Overall Good.

Estimate: 60 – 600 [Wheatley, Phillis.] "Recollection. To Miss A__ M__, Humbly Inscribed by the Authoress." From The Annual Register… for the Year 1772... London: Dodsley, 1795. 8vo. Modern 1/4 calf over early paper boards, untrimmed copy. ***** This was Wheatley's fourth published poem, and it would also be her first magazine appearance when it was originally published in the March 1772 issue of the London Magazine. It would be published in book form the following year with some revisions. The book, "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral," would be the first published book of poetry by an African-American. The poem appears here on pages 214-215 of the 1772 Annual Register (this being a 1795 reprinting of that issue.) The version here appears to be the unrevised version, as originally printed in 1772. For example, the second line, "Your vent'rous Afric in the deep design" was changed to "Your vent'rous Afric in her great design." Condition: A Very Good example, an untrimmed copy appearing scarcely opened (if at all.)

Light 1/4 leather over green marbled paper boards, title on label in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Housed here in custom slipcase. **** FIRST EDITION, SECOND PRINTING WITH REMARKABLE PROVENANCE. The present copy bears the bookplate and signed inscription of Thomas Harned, who was one of the literary executors of Walt Whitman's estate. His inscription on the front endpaper states, "This book was in Walt Whitman's room when and where he died. [signed] Thomas Harned / Literary Executor of W.W." The present copy, along with several other Whitman titles in the this auction (see subsequent lots) are more recently from the collection of noted Whitman scholar Frances Keuling Stout. Included with the book are: a copy of the receipt showing the purchase of this book as well as a letter to the seller, a certificate of authenticity from PBA, and a provenance provided to Keuling-Stout presumably by the seller. Condition: Binding worn and scuffed, hinges cracked but boards are holding, gutters cracked, chip to head of spine. Contents clean overall, with a few minor stains to margins of approx. four or five leaves, three leaves with tiny chip to upper corner (very small, no loss.)

Text complete, including divisional blanks and ad leaf at rear. Signed woodcut portrait in this copy (laid in) replacing the photographic portrait found in other copies. Bound in 1/4 leather over green marbled paper boards, title on label in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. The leather portions of the binding were redone (covering the original) but preserving the marbled boards and original endpapers. FIRST EDITION, SECOND PRINTING, INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN ON FRONT ENDPAPER to Philip Hale, who became a theatre critic after his time at Yale (where he served on the editorial board for The Yale Record.) The Walt Whitman Archive (see Whitmanarchive.org) notes that Hale and Whitman corresponded as early as 1871; it is further observed that Whitman's commonplace book notes that he sent a copy of Two Rivulets (presumably this copy) to Hale in September of 1876. Hale's ownership signature is present on the front pastedown and dated 1876. The woodcut portrait laid in this copy is signed and dated 1877. Allen, 1905), last three leaves with very small and faded stain to lower corner and a few other very small, faint stains.

Page 155 in this copy has the last "5" slightly larger (some copies have the last 5 removed, but neither has priority.) Page 283 is the cancel, as usual. Provenance: Bookplate of Tom H. Howes (ca. late 19th or early 20th c.) Condition: Front gutter cracked and possibly glued, light spotting to cloth and some toning and wear to gilt (see photos.) Contents with some finger-soiling and various stains in places (mostly small and minor), front blank and first page with 1" closed tear near gutter.

Bound in publisher's original cloth stamped in gilt and blind. First edition, TRUE FIRST STATE with the illustration on page 441 depicting an urn with Twain's head in flames, and page 443 illustration incorrectly captioned as the St. Louis Hotel (later changed to St. Charles.) Condition: Overall a Very Good copy and one of the better examples we've encountered. Some slight loss to spine ends, gutters cracked, one gathering with some chipping to edges and one of those leaves with edge-toning (see photo showing that page, which the worst flaw in the book), a few other leaves with some tiny chips to edges (very small, minor), a few instances of very light finger-soiling or similar blemishes. Overall, a rather clean and nice example with some minor flaws.

Grant's Intentions," humorously approaching the matter of learning about Ulysses S. Grants intentions should he become president. Condition: Creased as folded, light soiling along folds.

Estimate: 80 – 800 Autograph letter signed by Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander, who was deputy head of Hut 8 under Alan Turing at Bletchley Park, in the effort of break the German codes during WWII. Alexander was also a renowned chess player. The current letter, dated September 21, 1949, relates to errors found in his book on Alekhine's best games of chess. 12mo, 1 pg. Condition: One crease flattened at center, else Very Good.

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1916 (i.e. 1919.) 8vo. 64 pp. Bound in modern cloth hardcovers, original front wrapper trimmed and mounted to leaf preceding the title-page. An early reprint of Einstein's highly important work on relativity, differing from the first only in the imprint line to title verso, here reading "Druck von Omnitypie-Ges., Nachfl. L. Zechnall, Stuttgart." Condition: Front wrapper stained, trimmed and mounted to leaf at front; signature to title upper right corner, else clean and Very Good.

Estimate: 40 – 400 "Apollo 11… NASA Voice Line." Lengthy manuscript in pencil on leaves numbered 56, 99, 7, 4, 12, and 23 (appears complete.) 12mo leaves placed in wrappers with cloth tape for spine (meant to hold the leaves together but many are loose.) A very unusual manuscript copy of the voice line during the moon landing. A note to the first leaf states that the contents were "rechecked Nov. '71." The writer (who is unidentified) states, "I have attempted to produce an accurate version of what the astronauts of Apollo 11 said during the landing, Moonwalk and liftoff. It is certain (to me) that such is not to be found in any of the quoted transcript references, partly due to editing, partly due to errors." Condition: Many leaves detached (never truly bound, complied of loose leaves), clean overall, Very Good.

VERY SCARCE. Worldcat only locates a few copies, held in various national libraries. RBH records no previous auction appearance. The work was issued as number 135 of the "Comedia Famosa", apparently published over a number of years and likely intended to be bound with other works from the series. Condition: Unopened, Very Good with only some limited and very light foxing.

Condition: Hinges cracked but secure, edges a bit worn, some scuffs, rear board with chip professionally restored. Buenos Aires: Imprenta del Sol, [1816.] Folio, 4 pp. Tipped into modern folder. **** Hilarion de Quintana was an important figure in the struggle for independence in Argentina. In the present document, he states that as governor of Salta he raised funds for the army in Buenos Aires, and he defends himself against accusations of financial irregularities.. Condition: Very Good, second leaf with chip (or perhaps simply a paper flaw) to upper right margin.

It includes the original Greek text by Aristoxenus, Cleonides (attributed to Euclid), Nicomachus, Alypius, Gaudentius, Bacchius, and Aristides Quintilianus, accompanied by Latin translations and commentary by Marcus Meibom. Condition: Faded waterstaining in places throughout, light foxing, ex-Vatican with some ink-stamps (and with bookplate to front pastedown of Otto Orren Fisher), spine lacking label, vellum with some stains and tears, lacking 4 letterpress tables and sold as-is.

This collation matches the Folger catalogue excepting leaf M4 is here absent. Early calf rebacked with original spine panel laid on. Several instances early manuscript notes, including an ownership signature of James (?) at end; refer to photo. A history of England in Latin hexameters and of Kett's East Anglian rebellion. The last two pieces were first published in 1582, though there are a number of different issues and mixed editions. "Each of the pieces has a title page so as to sell separately. The work was appointed by Qu. Elizabeth and her privy council to be received and taught in every grammar and free-school within the kingdom, 'For the removing of such lascivious poets as are commonly reade and taught in the said grammar schooles'"--Lowndes 1716. State Library – of this mid 18th century battle plan. The Battle of Lake George was an important victory for the British in the early years of the war French and Indian War. The map and plans were based on sketches by Samuel Blodget. When Blodget's plan was published in Boston in 1755, it became "the first geographic representation of a battle plan published in America" (Schwartz & Ehrenberg.) Condition: Lower left margin cropped but not touching image, the whole rather foxed, creased as folded, one 1" closed tear to left. As-is.

Partially printed document completed in manuscript. 15.5" x 12.75". ******** Appointing Samuel Barnard to Major in the 1st Regiment of the Militia in the County of Middlesex, Massachusetts. Samuel Barnard (1737-1782) participated in the Boston Tea Party and served in the Revolutionary War. This document is signed by Perez Morton (1751-1837, lawyer, Rev. patriot) at bottom, and signed by numerous other parties on the left side, notably, SIGNED BY GENERAL BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810, Major General and important figure in the Continental Army, second to Washington.) Other signatories include Moses Gill, B. Greenleaf, J. Winthrop, John Whitcomb, among others. Condition: Document was folded and there are splits along the folds, several chips with loss, seal is chipped, four repairs to rear, refer to photos. As-is.

Estimate: 200 – 2000 "Treachery of Arnold. A Tragedy in 5 Scenes." Dated 1838 at end. Folio, 6 pages, plus docket leaf at end. Ink on wove. Docket leaf notes the title and reads "For the Repository… Van Rensselaer, March 23, 1838." An apparently unpublished play about Benedict Arnold, ending with the execution of John Andre. Condition: Some very mild spotting and toning, Good.

Estimate: 60 – 600 First Congress. AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE UNLADING OF SHIPS AND VESSELS, IN CASES OF OBSTRUCTION BY ICE. [Philadelphia, 1791.] Broadside, 11.25" x 7.5". A rare and unusual imprint from the First Congress, still in slip bill form, probably for proofing. In this state, it is printed without the usual prefatory language identifying the Congress, its Session, and place of meeting. The Act was approved by President Washington on January 7, 1791. Scarce. Condition: Very faint staining to upper margin, else Very Good.

Reads in part: "Dr. Sir, Give me leave to introduce to your acquaintance Col. Humphreys the confidential aide of the President.... He goes for Georgia in the appoint.... of Commissioner for treating with the Southern Indians. General Lincoln, with whom you are well acquainted, and Mr. Cyrus Gibson who was President of Congress in 1788 accompany him - the latter Colonel will introduce you...." Estimate: 60 – 600 [Akin, James, attributed to.] THE PEDLAR AN HIS PACK OR THE DESPERATE EFFORT; AN OVER BALANCE. [Philadelphia, 1828.] Hand-colored etching, sheet 14" x 9.5". John Binns, an editor in Philadelphia, had circulated several critical circulars called "coffin hand bills" that accused Jackson of arbitrary executions of American militia volunteers and Native American prisoners, all in an effort to harm Jackson politically on the eve of the Presidential election. Oddly enough, this only increased Jackson's popularity. The present etching satirizes the situation, depicting Binns under the weight of coffins, with John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay adding commentary. Condition: Two chips to border, 2" tape repair to verso (repairing a closed tear.)

Estimate: 20 – 200 October 6, 1767. Document by William Glascock (1730-1793) relating to the sale of a plantation in South Carolina. "I do humbly certify for Mathew Singleton a Plantation or Tract of Land containing 150 acres…." Witnessed by John Troup. 9.5" x 5.75". William Glascock was born in Virginia but moved to Augusta, Georgia, after becoming a lawyer. He later served as Governor of Georgia during the Revolutionary War and was labeled as a "Rebel Counselor" by the British. Condition: Creases, tears, chips, refer to photos, as-is.

Estimate: 50 – 500 Benjamin, Judah. SPEECH OF HON. J. P. BENJAMIN, OF LOUISIANA, ON THE RIGHT OF SECESSION. DELIVERED IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES, DEC. 31, 1860. [Washington: Towers, 1861..] 8vo. 16 pp. Disbound, with caption title (as issued.) First edition. The author was one of the earliest Southern senators to advise secession following the election of Lincoln. After David Yulee of Florida, Benjamin was only the second Jew to serve in the US Senate. Here, he provides a detailed constitutional justification for secession, closing by saying "You never can convert free sons of the soil into vassals, paying tribute to your power, and you never, never can degrade them to the level of an inferior and servile race. Never! Never!" Condition: Some very light foxing to a few leaves (clean otherwise), a very small tape repair to spine.

Estimate: 30 – 300 THE TRIBUNE ALMANAC FOR 1861. New York, [1860.] 12mo, in original publisher's printed wrappers. 80 pp. ********* Scarce. Contains the December 1860 Declaration of Independence of South Carolina, along with an article explaining that when "enough returns from the election had been received to render it certain that Abraham Lincoln would be the next President, public meetings were held in the city of Charleston...." South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. Also included here are numerous election returns from the states for the contentious 1860 election. A very scarce issue of this publication, not to be confused with the facsimile edition of the mid 20th c.; RBH records only two auction appearances, one of which was another copy (sold in our saleroom) found along with the present example. Condition: Covers a bit soiled, stab-hole to upper corner (presumably for a ring to hold it in a binder at some point), contents clean overall. Good.

The pamphlet highlights deficiencies in the judicial system, often citing over-burdened judges, travelling "incessant circuits." The work puts forth proposals for court reorganization and expenditures. Sabin 87918. Condition: Overall Very Good, a few instances of light foxing or similar.

Heintzelman (1805-1880). 8vo, 3 pp. ******* Addressed to "My dear Captain," Heintzelman writes of proceedings, guerillas robbing stores, gun-boats, and Rebel raids. And interesting letter with good content, some of which is provided below: "We are getting along pretty well with our Court. We will probably get through with the witnesses for the prosecution on Friday...." "I have just seen the account of the Capture of Generals Crook and Kelly...a most unfortunate affair for the Generals. I don't feel at all safe here in this place. I will take 50 men and come into town any night and capture any individual I care to. The picket line extends around, just in the outskirts of the town. Our best security is that the Guerillas prefer to rob stores to capturing Generals." "We have three gunboats lying off the town. The hotel and houses show many marks of the raid into the town by the rebels last year... the rebels lost heavily." Condition: Creases from previous folding, Very Good.

Condition: Several large chips with loss of text (refer to photos), as-is.

A rare broadside, apparently printed in several locales (all of them rare.) In was originally published in the Philadelphia Dollar Weekly News. George Washington appears to McClellan and says "There will be no more Bull Run affairs," and predicts a great future for the United States. Condition: Fading around edges, trimmed to border, a few very tiny tears to edges.

Estimate: 50 – 500 An unused ticket to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Gallery entrance for April 7th, 1868. 4.75" x 2.75". On uncommon yellow card, stub still affixed. Quite scarce. Johnson was the first U.S. President to be impeached, and he was ultimately acquitted by a single vote. Condition: Very Good condition.

Estimate: 50 – 500 A pair of printed and manuscript depositions, true copies, relating to the capture of the CSS Georgia in 1864. Both of the statements were taken from Edward Thompson, and they are dated the sixth and the eleventh (respectively) of October, 1864. Folios. Both with partially printed documents at front followed by statements in manuscript (one 4 1/2 pages, the other 2 pages.) The CSS Georgia was originally built as a fast merchantman named Japan. The Confederate States purchased the ship in 1863 at Dumbarton, Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and was commissioned as the CSS Georgia, under the command of William Lewis Maury. She captured 9 prizes during her time of service but was sold in June of 1864 to a Liverpool merchant in spite of protests from the United States Minister to Great Britain. The ship returned to sea in August of 1864 and was captured by the US Navy frigate Niagara off Portugal. She was then sent to Boston, Mass., where she was sold as a lawful prize. Edward Thompson, who gave the two present depositions, was one of the parties claiming a share in the prize. Condition: Creased as folded, else Very Good.

Estimate: 30 – 300 February 11, 1863. Milledgeville, Georgia. Autograph letter signed by Confederate Adjutant and Inspector General Henry C. Wayne (1815-1883). Sent to General Samuel Cooper in Richmond. 4to, 2 pg. Ink on blue/gray wove paper. The letter mostly concerns supplies for the Confederacy. In part, "The factory they are interested in is at this place and has had large contracts with the Confederate Government. It has now a heavy contract with this state for clothing destitute Georgians in the service of the Confederacy, and has also a contract I am informed with the Confederate Government... The house of Waitsfelder & Co. are represented by three or four of its members in the army, one lost his leg at (?) on the Peninsula." Henry C. Wayne would later serve as Brigadier General and commanded Confederate troops during Sherman's March to the Sea at the Battle of Ball's Ferry. Prior to the Civil War, he had served in the U.S. Army and was known for leading the expedition to test the U.S. Camel Corps as part of Jefferson Davis's plan to use camels as transport in the west. General Samuel Cooper, to whom this letter is addressed, was technically the highest ranking officer in the Confederate States Army. Condition: Creases flattened, remnants of stub to rear lower margin, Good.

Estimate: 50 – 500 A group of manuscript items written by a Confederate solider; notably contains a hastily written letter from a soldier in the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg..."We had a terrible fight...." Dated July 8 [1863], from a "Camp Near Hagerstown." The 4 page letter is written in pencil on 2 sheets of varying size (seemingly whatever was at hand.) In part, "Dear Liz, I write you a few lines which will inform you that I am well at this time truly hoping these lines may reach and find you all well. It's signed at the end "J.S.D" to "E.D." (presumably Elizabeth, or "Liz.") The Confederates retreated through Hagerstown, MD following the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3.) Also with a manuscript in pencil in the same hand containing a "Peace Ticket" with a remark (on recto), "I saw a citizen with This Ticket, I copied it and will send it to you." The "Peace Ticket," copied in manuscript (on verso) reads, "Peace Ticket, For the next President Election Jeff Davis.... All Negroes to be sent South, Abe Lincoln to be sent to the Devil." The above are accompanied by two other pages from different letters, found with the above, one mentions Lizzy (presumably the "Liz" addressed in the other letters.) Condition: Creases, some staining, chipping to edges, refer to photos, sold as-is.

Estimate: 30 – 300 October 8, 1877. New York City. Autograph letter signed by Alexander Stephens (1812-1833.) 8vo letter with accompanying copy of portrait, here matted and ready for framing. Overall, as matted 14" x 11". Alexander Stephens served as Vice President of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia before and after the war, and he also served as Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death in 1883. The present letter is essentially a kind memento, addressed to Mr. William W. Johnson, thanking him for the "pleasant days I have spent at your father's house, the memory of which will ever be cherished by you sincere friend. Alexander H. Stephens / 9 East 64 Street / N. York City / 8 Oct. 1877." Condition: Letter previously laid down onto board, since removed, but with remnants of board to verso. Mild toning. As-is.

Condition: Covers lightly dust-soiled, some even toning to contents, front cover with faint erasure of some pencil markings. Good.

Also included is a printing of "The New Reconstruction Bill" and other commentary on reconstruction in the aftermath of the Civil War. Condition: Creased as folded, some light stains and marginal chips/tears.

Estimate: 80 – 800 James Longstreet, autograph note signed. [Circa 1881.] 12mo, 1 pg. A note which is not addressed and possibly the end of a letter. "His Highness the Sultan has not yet appointed an ------ for us. Procrastination seems ----- leading ------ now, in Diplomacy." James Longstreet was the principal subordinate to General Lee, who referred to him as "Old War Horse." Later in life, President Hayes appointed him as Minister Resident to the Ottoman Empire for a brief period between December 1880 and April 1881. It appears this note was likely written during that period. He was recalled at his own request, and the present note may lend clues as to his dissatisfaction there. Though his time there was abbreviated, he did manage to convince the Sultan to allow American archeologists to conduct research in Ottoman territories. Condition: Two creases flattened, very minor foxing.

Estimate: 70 – 700 May 12, 1758. Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Ink on vellum, with two red wax seals affixed, 29.5" x 26". Regarding a tract of 1300 acres sold to James Logan in Pennsylvania. Among a few other signatories, the document is signed by British loyalist and clergyman Charles Inglis (1734-1816.) Around the period that the present document was signed, Inglis was leaving his job as master of a church school in Lancaster, PA; he briefly returned to Britain to receive his ordination before returning to America (Delaware) in 1758. Among other things, he is known today for his evangelical work among the Mohawk Indians and his firm support of the British during the Revolutionary War. Reportedly, he once prayed aloud for King George III while George Washington was among the church congregation. Following the Revolutionary War, his property was confiscated and he fled the newly formed United States of America. Condition: Creased, as folded. Light soiling, refer to photos, as-is.

Estimate: 100 – 1000 New York, July 30, 1874. Letter to President Ulysses S. Grant from Alfred P. Evans, requesting a recommendation for a job in the government. With handwritten note in pencil on back, possibly in the hand of Grant, reading, "Return enclosure with note saying that it is impossible for me to assist owing to great pressure for places." Condition: Light abrasion or paper remnant near fold to rear, creases flattened as previously folded as letter. Good.

Estimate: 60 – 600 Roger B. Taney. Document signed. [Maryland] October 19, 1815. 13" x 8". A legal document from Taney's earlier years as an attorney. He is best know today as the U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice who delivered the majority opinion in the Dred Scott case (1857), ruling that African Americans could not be considered U.S. citizens and that Congress could not prohibit slavery in the U.S. territories. The present is a deposition from a custody case involving the grandson of the Graham-Zimmerman families. Signed "R. B. Taney" at end. Condition: Creased as folded, closed 1.5" tear along one fold, Good.

New York: John Day, [1963.] 8vo, hardcover in jacket. ******* AUGUST MEIR'S COPY with his manuscript notes and typescript of his book review laid in, addressed to James W. Ivy, editor, The Crisis. Meier was a leading scholar of African-American history at Kent State University and a significant figure in the Civil Rights movement. Condition: Book Good, some light fading to cloth, contents clean aside from the Meier notations, jacket Fair only with a number of chips and tears.

Estimate: 30 – 300 Letter from a Confederate soldier, possibly part of a larger letter but signed at the end by John D. Baker. Undated, containing thoughts on family, mustering into service, furlough, and friends. 4to, 4 pp. Ink on ruled blue paper, ink quite faded but legible with effort. Reads in part, "I shed many tears and try to pray for you and my poor children that one blessed God may take care of you all and of me that we may meet again on earth but if never permitted... I pray that we all may meet in Heaven... I can get furlough for forty days. Write to me whether Ben Jackson and Josh is gone back to their command." SOLD WITH another Civil War letter from a soldier, signed D.W. H., addressed to "Julia," presumably a love-interest. Unknown if soldier was Union or Confederate. 4 pp, ink on ruled paper. In part, "I will not enlist again now. Let them that has not been out come and serve their three years... I think the coming summer will end the war or it at least ought to if it is managed right." Condition: First item quite faded, see photos, as-is.

They toured parts of the USA and later performed in England and Europe. They sang traditional spirituals, preserving these various African American slave songs. The present is signed by J. P. Dickerson, Ella Sheppard, Julia Jackson, Mabel R. Lewis, Georgia M. Gordon, Thomas Rutling, and Jennie Jackson. Condition: Very Good.

Per ODNB, "Jenks developed moralizing messages in several of his writings, lecturing against swearing, lewdness, and lust." Condition: Very slight wear to corners and very light rubbing to front hinge, binding is sound and firm, contents clean overall with some light intermittent toning in places. A Very Good example.

Additional engraved title, [6], 640, [24] pp., with 12 engravings (one for each month of the year) in-text depicting the Virgin Mary in various contexts. Bound in period vellum with title to spine in manuscript. An attractive book. Condition: Some discoloration to vellum as normal, contents clean though some offsetting from a few plates, a nice copy.

Plate 10" x 8", trimmed within plate and laid down onto heavy laid sheet. Nice impression of this fascinating Biblical scene of Lot welcoming the angels who came to warm him to leave Sodom before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Historic Bibles and Engravings. Condition: Mild toning and some light foxing to sheet, but overall Very Good.

Estimate: 60 – 600 Orosius, Paulus. ADVERSUS PAGANOS, (QUOS VOCANT) HISTORIARUM LIBRI SEPTEM. Cologne: Gennepaei, 1542. 6" x 3.75". [32], 516 pp. Title set within woodcut border and with woodcut initials to text. Bound in early blind-stamped vellum over boards, dated 1569 in manuscript. Contents with occasional ink notes. The author's most important work, which had a great impact on historiography up until the Middle Ages. The work is focused on the history of pagan peoples up until Orosius' time. Paulus Orosius (ca. 375-420 A.D) was a Roman priest connected with Augustine and Jerome. Condition: Ties lacking, tearing to spine and with 20th c. label to base, several ink-stamps to title, otherwise clean overall with some mild toning in place.

He argues that Christianity was a Jewish sect which has become perverted. Condition: Spine reinforced with archival tape, covers and one text leaf with ink-stamp, otherwise Very Good.

This is from the first of Koberger's Bibles and the first Bible printed in Nuremburg. The present leaf is from the gospel of Mark, containing the end of chapter 5 through much of chapter 7. He collaborated with Jonathan Edwards and Joseph Bellamy in the creation of the "New Divinity." He would preach in Newport, Rhode Island from 1770 until his death in 1803.
