Twenty-three of these "Shirley letters" would appear in The Pioneer during the 1850s. Her perspective on life in the nearly all-male mining camps was rather unique, and her letters provide an invaluable insight into life during the California Gold Rush. This issue also includes material related to exploration in Oregon, and other material. Ink on fine laid paper with watermark. ********* Letter dated May 18, 1813, sent to the Commander General of the Province of El Mezquital, State of Mexico, by an unknown officer. The commander of El Mezquital reports that the soldiers stationed in the Indian town of Temoaya requested help as forces under Ensign Blanco have been surrounded by the enemy during his retreat in the Indian village of Tajicazinga. Therefore, he sent Ensign Carranco with 49 soldiers to help them. On May 10 they returned to Temoaya safely, with some soldiers wounded by stones and others by arrows, none grave. Ensign Carrasco sends a communication May 13 where he informs that he has captured a messenger from the rebels whose mission was to incite the Indians in Temoaya to revolt. This messenger said all the Indians were willing to revolt. He arrested 2 Indians and they confessed this same fact. The messenger also implicated in the revolt General de la Cruz Baldez. After further enquires the commander decided the Indians were innocent and he let them free. As for the General, he couldn't find any proof of guilt; moreover, the General was highly decorated and he had nothing to gain by joining the revolt. So, it was decided the accusations against the General were false. Condition: Clean, Very Good.

The American Antiquarian Society describes this work as "An adaptation for children of the comic narrative poem Monsieur Tonson, by John Taylor (1757-1832). For his authorship see the Dictionary of national biography." It also notes that "Morgan and Yeager published together from 1815 to 1824" and that the work was "probably issued after 1820." Another observation is that the hand-colored plates "might be by William Charles, who worked with Joseph Yeager" but that the title is "not listed in Harry B. Weiss' William Charles: Early caricaturist, engraver and publisher of children's books (1932)." 19th-century signature of Richard H. His 1833 work "The Fantastic Journey of Baron Brambeusa," is credited as being among the earliest Russian science-fiction, predating similar stories by Jules Verne. Very scarce. One leaf with a hand-colored initial (coloring is not period.) The "She" Bible followed closely behind the "He" Bible, which was the first edition of the King James version of the Bible, printed in 1611. The greater part of the "She" Bible was also printed in 1611, though it would not be published until 1613, according to Herbert. Condition: Very mild toning, Very Good.

Lot consists of 3 cases, containing 34 folding maps which are presented in panels and linen-backed; the maps in two of the cases with black cloth panels and publisher's label, and the maps in the other case are similarly presented but with marbled paper panels and labels in manuscript. The maps show detail of various districts in Britain. Unfolded they measure approximately 26.5" x 20.5". Condition: Overall Very Good, cases with some wear, some linen with light fraying. Sold as-is.

Estimate: 300 – 3000 A manuscript draft of a biography of Commodore William Bainbridge (1774-1833) written circa 1834/5 by his longtime friend Thomas Harris. The manuscript is accompanied by a letter (presenting this manuscript, in 1916) from a descendant of both the Harris and Bainbridge. This is an early partial draft of this work, with some passages substantially as published in 1837 and with other sections bearing little resemblance to the final published work. Commodore Bainbridge was an important figure in the early American Navy. He surrendered his vessel and was imprisoned for 19 months in Tripoli during the first Barbary War. During the War of 1812, he commanded the USS Constitution in a victory over the HMS Java. Thomas Harris, his longtime friend who wrote the present work, was a naval surgeon. Here, the text ends abruptly in the aftermath of the War of 1812, correlating with page 203 of the 254 page published work. ******** Ink on wove paper. 13.5" x 8.25", unbound. 330 numbered leaves, though around 42 leaves are lacking in various places (quite possibly redacted by the author). The draft contains various corrections to the text throughout. Major John Walley commanded forces in New England and was second in command at the Battle of Quebec during King William's War in 1690. Here, he writes to Captain Hill and apprises him of goods which are being sent. The 1/2 page letter is followed by an extensive inventory of various goods, including corn, nails, boards, pork, "very good powder," and much more. Irish secret society, known for their violent conflicts; they were active in Ireland, Liverpool, and the eastern U.S. In the United States, the "Mollies" became largely inactive in the late 19th century, following a number of arrests, trials, and executions of members who perpetrated violent crimes. Murphy between 1912 and 1914. Joseph was her boyfriend and the two would marry in 1914. Fannie met Joe at some point in 1912, in Cordova, AL. He relocated to Felton, GA for his work as a carpenter on the railroad. It appears that he travelled to see her every weekend. After their wedding, they travelled to Atlanta to meet his family; from there, they honeymooned in Washington, D.C. Sadly, Fannie Pauline Tubb Murphy died only a few years later on June 14, 1917; she is buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cordova, Alabama. Condition: Condition varies, overall Good. Sold as-is.

Zion Presbyterian church in Hancock County, GA was built in 1813 and included a school-house and various other buildings; the church building itself is still standing and is owned by the Hancock County Historical Trust. Condition: Covers very worn and rear cover mostly absent, contents with scattered foxing, final leaf with creasing.

Estimate: 70 – 700 Autograph letter signed by Phineas Miller. Mulberry Grove, March 1st, 1786. Folio, 3 pp., ink on laid. ********** Written by Miller to Jonathan Maltby of Midway, GA. Phineas Miller (1764–1803), a native of Connecticut and a Yale graduate, moved to south Georgia following the Revolutionary War, and he worked there at General Nathanael Greene's Mulberry Grove plantation. While there, Phineas Miller would befriend a slightly younger man named Eli Whitney. General Greene died in June of 1786, and in 1796, Miller would marry Gen. Greene's widow Catharine Littlefield Greene; George and Martha Washington would serve as witnesses to the wedding. Miller became a Georgia planter, justice, state senator, and the sponsor and business partner of Eli Whitney in his invention of the cotton gin. This letter is written by a 22 year old Miller who tells a friend of his situation at Mulberry Grove and says he should not worry; he speaks fondly of the Greenes and seems pleased to be there: "...both the Gen. and Mrs. Greene treat me with every mark of kindness and attention which I can possibly desire..." He speaks also of his duties tutoring and remarks that "The Children who are my pupils are the most amiable I have ever seen." The letter continues on to politely decline an invitation for a visit, noting the difficultly in traversing the uncultivated land. In 1793, fate would devise a fortuitous meeting of Eli Whitney and Gen. Greene's widow, who invited Whitney to Mulberry Grove to work with her soon-to-be husband Phineas Miller. Katharine possessed a rather busy pen, and her present diary contains much detail about the places visited and her experiences there. Among the more interesting encounters was her meeting Col. Harden fled but was captured, tried, and hung before a large crowd of onlookers. In this letter, Davis strongly refuses to write an article on the subject which the editor has assigned (presumably praising the Red Cross; "I would do anything for you, but, write about something I don't know anything about." Davis also mentions going to the battle-front to see the Red Cross in action, "and then I shall only be too glad to give them the thanks and praise we owe them." Condition: Left upper corners with staple holes, creases flattened, clean, Good+.

(Madrid, 1751) but with additions as the translator thought appropriate given the controversy in Colombia surrounding the organization. An unusual translation and likely undertaken for missionary purposes in Asia. The language appears to be an Indian dialect. A very unusual and scarce item. John Spittlehouse was a Fifth Monarchist and determined controversialist who supported Cromwell until concluding that Cromwell was not, in fact, the new Moses. Here the author uses a great many capital letters and Biblical quotations to argue in favor of the dissolution of Parliament and against maintaining a standing army, since the army had taken to apostasy and hypocrisy. (Spittlehouse also wrote "The Army Vindicated, in their Late Dissolution of the Parliament"; his postscript here notes that his position on the army had changed since the publication of that pamphlet.) Rarely seen in commerce: The last record we find of this title in commerce is in a Magg's catalogue from 1928. ESTC R2033631. The present is a very practical work, as Anderson sought to produce "a concise view of all those subjects that ought to demand the farmer's attention." Condition: A couple of very small scuffs, contents clean overall, two leaves of text with large corner chips (no loss of text in either instance), four plates laid down and with small holes to center, else Very Good.

Condition: Minor wear to extremities, original silk bookmark detached and laid in, some signatures sprung and the whole slightly shaken with text block starting to pull. Front fly-leaf with early penciled gift inscription and with a Maine druggist's small ticket. Mild to moderate foxing throughout.

The authorized second series was not published until 1833, under the title "The Last Essays of Elia"; the pieces selected for the unauthorized American second series offered here are different from those contained in that volume, and they mistakenly include three essays written by other hands. Condition: Vol. I: Uncut copy. Publisher's quarter once-red cloth and paper sides, covers printed with "Elia" within a simple frame, spine with printed paper label; binding rubbed and lightly soiled, spine sunned to yellow. Repaired tear to one leaf, touching text without loss; remarkably clean and sound.
