US Model 1860 Cavalry sword, presented to Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient Brevet Brigadier General (Then Captain) Andrew Barclay Spurling, 1st and 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiment. Single edged, curved, bright blade. Double acid etched with "US", floral and patriotic patterns. No visible maker marks. Leather buffer pad present. Decorated, gilded brass three-branch guard. Hand engraved "Presented to Captain Andrew Barclay Spurling" on the outer branch and "Feb. 16 1863 by Officers and Men of the Cavalry" under the guard. Wire and fishskin wrapped grip. Steel scabbard with decorated, gilded brass fittings. Andrew Barclay Spurling was born March 20, 1833, in Cranberry Isles, Maine. During his youth, he worked as a sailor in Maine and later as a miner and farmer in California from the age of 12. After returning to Maine at 22, he married and became the captain of a merchant vessel. When the Civil War broke out, Spurling enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned as a lieutenant in Company D of the 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment in September 1861. He fought in several battles, including Middleton, Winchester, Middleburg, and Brandy Station, Virginia. In February 1863, he was promoted to Captain, followed by a promotion to Junior Major in January 1864, and Lieutenant Colonel in July 1864 while serving in Florida. For his extraordinary bravery on March 23, 1865, near Evergreen, Alabama, while leading a company of scouts, Spurling was awarded the Medal of Honor. His citation states that he "Advanced alone into the darkness beyond the picket line, encountered three enemy soldiers, engaged them in combat despite returning fire, wounded two, and successfully captured the entire group." He received the Medal of Honor in 1897. He mustered out of the Army in 1865 as a Brevetted Brigadier General and moved back to Maine. After the war Spurling became a Sea Captain again, Sheriff, Real estate investor and President of the Chicago Rawhide Manufacturing Company. He passed away from heart problems on August 22, 1906. He is buried in Section 4 at the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Blade Length: 35 5/8" Total Length: 41 1/2" Condition: Very good. Blade has light wear, scratches and faded acid etching. Blades have oxidation, pitting and scratches. Machete handle is cracked and missing pieces.

Nickel crossguard with stag horn handle. Leather sheath. (1) JP Miller Stag Horn Bowie. Single edged blade with maker mark etched on the ricasso. Brass crossguard with stag horn handle. Black leather sheath. Blade Length: 6 1/2" to 8" Total Length: 11 1/2" to 12 3/4" Condition: Fair. Moderate oxidation on the blades. RJ Richter knife has a bent crossguard and sheath has heavy wear.
