"Point Mugu" limited etching by Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954, American). Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 28, 1878 into a family of actors, Lionel Barrymore wanted to become a painter but followed family tradition and proceeded to become one of the best known actors of stage, screen, and radio. While working as an actor, he etched and painted in his leisure. He was a pupil of Ferdinand Kamps, whom he often joined on painting trips, and also he spent time with William Eskey learning etching for the first time at Eskey;s Twentynine Palms ranch in California. Barrymore was also the author of Mr. Cantonwine: A Moral Tale. During his last years, he was confined to a wheelchair due to a series of hip fractures. Ansel was a landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. He and Fred Archer developed a system of image-making called the Zone System, a method of achieving a desired final print through a technical understanding of how the tonal range of an image is the result of choices made in exposure, negative development, and printing. Andy Thomas of Carthage, Missouri is dedicated to the Trans-Mississippi Civil War series in which he is depicting battles West of the Mississippi River. These have been, for the most part, undoctumented by todays artists. Antoine Berjon was a French painter and designer, among the most important flower painters of 19th-century France. He worked in a variety of media including oil, pastel, watercolour, and ink. Berjon was born in St Pierre de Vaise, a commune of Lyon, to the son of a butcher, and he first studied drawing with the local sculptor Antoine-Michel Perrache. His early history is not clear; according to his uncorroborated biographer J. Gaubin, he may have studied medicine or a religious vocation, learning flower painting during his novitiate. He went to work as a designer of textiles in Lyon's important silk industry until its collapse with the French Revolution. Berjon's paintings from the 1780s are untraced. In 1791, the Paris Salon accepted four of his works, including Still Life of Peaches and Grapes. He visited Paris often in the early 1790s and moved there in 1794, becoming a friend of Jean-Baptiste-Jean Augustin, a painter of miniatures, and of Claude-Jean-Baptiste Hoin, a portraitist. Isobel Cochran (1939-2023) Original Watercolor Painting. Piece depicts a familiar neighborhood road with comfortable, casual houses. Framed with glass pane. Isobel states "I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and started drawing and painting as soon as I could hold a pencil and paintbrush. My mother was very creative in many different areas and always encouraged me. All through my school years I won awards for my art work, and I was very pleased to find an art related job when I left school. I went to work for Donegal Carpets and was involved in the design of their hand-tufted carpets. The designs for these were limitless and sometimes challenging. The finished carpets were installed in many embassies and other well known public and private buildings worldwide. During this time, I continued my studies in the evening with courses at the Royal College of Art and took a commercial art course. After working for 10 years as a carpet designer, I moved to New Hampshire with my husband. Later we moved to Lake Forest, IL and there, after starting a family, I became involved with the Deer Path Art League, showing in their gallery, participating in their yearly fall show and teaching workshops. My work can be found in professional offices and private collections in the Chicago area and across the U.S., Ireland, England and even farther afield. In 1994, we moved back to Hanover, NH where I now live and have my studio. While largely self-taught, I have taken workshops with several well-known artists including Nita Engle, Irving Shapiro and Don Andrews. Their influence and generosity of input is appreciated. New England scenes are among my favorite subjects, and in recent years I have included many flower and garden images. When travelling I bring paints, sketch books and camera to gather material for future paintings. Following visits to England and Scotland, I have painted many country and fishing village scenes. I find the old fishing villages endlessly fascinating, especially on a calm day when there are wonderful reflections. I work in transparent watercolor. Using a controlled wet into wet technique, my soft cool palette helps create the misty backgrounds that depict the gentle atmosphere of my landscape subjects. I use a glazing technique to portray the effect of still, reflective water – in many instances building up multiple layers of glazes. Favorite papers are Arches (Bright White 140 and 300lb cold press), Kilimanjaro (140 and 300lb) and I have become increasingly fascinated by the synthetic paper made by YUPO and love the bright, jewel like colors of the pigments when they dry on that surface. My palette includes colors from Windsor & Newton, Daniel Smith and Holbein – mostly in the transparent range and I try to avoid the staining colors. I am a member of the New Hampshire Art Association, I have served on the Hanover Council of the New Hampshire League of Arts & Crafts and am a past president of the Deer Path Art League in Lake Forest." For example, in his painting Forest Scene, the artist paints a small creek flooded with light. Born in 1913 in Vienna, Austria, Kugler studied first at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After completing his education, he returned to Austria where he spent the majority of his career. Keith Haring (1958-1990, American) Signed "Best Buddies" Screen Print. Features classic Keith Haring Best Buddies original street art. Piece 200/200. It is our opinion that this piece is an authentic original screen print and NOT done in the manner of. This opinion is based on research with the assistance of Christie's auction house. That being said, this piece has not been certified by a professional art appraiser so bid accordingly as there are no guarantees. All sales are final on this piece. When Haring arrived in New York, it was home to a thriving underground art scene. Haring befriended fellow emerging artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, who shared his interest in the colorful and transgressive graffiti art of the city's streets. Haring and these other artists organized exhibitions at downtown nightclubs and other alternative locations, where art, music and fashion all came together in a dynamic mix. Beyond the clubs, Haring began using the city as his canvas. Riding the subway, he noticed the black paper rectangles of empty advertising panels on station walls; using white chalk, he began filling these black panels with simple, quickly drawn pictures. His signature images included dancing figures, a "radiant baby" (a crawling infant emitting rays of light), a barking dog, a flying saucer, large hearts, and figures with televisions for heads. These graffiti drawings attracted the attention of New York commuters, as well as the city authorities: Haring was arrested for vandalism on numerous occasions. Haring soon began to apply his universally recognizable imagery to freestanding drawings and paintings. The energy and optimism of his art, with its bold lines and bright colors, brought him popularity with a wide audience. He had his first solo exhibition in 1981, at the Westbeth Painters Space in Manhattan. In 1982 he began to show his art at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, which would represent him for the rest of his career. Throughout the 1980s, Haring's work was exhibited widely both within the United States and internationally. He also collaborated with other artists and performers, including Andy Warhol, Grace Jones and William S. Burroughs. Always wanting to make his art more accessible, Haring opened a retail store called the Pop Shop in New York City's SoHo neighborhood in 1986; the shop sold posters, T-shirts and other affordable items featuring Haring's signature designs. It is also one of the most painted and photographed buildings in America. The Spaniards had farmed this area since the 1700's and established a permanent settlement in 1813, the church being completed two years later. The beauty of the Taos landscape and the aliveness of the Pueblo and Hispanic cultures soon attracted to the area the first artists and at the turn of the century (1898) Taos became a famous art colony. Since then countless artists and writers have moved or traveled there, and all of them have been challenged by the graceful, sculptural forms of the Ranchos de Taos Church. Its elegant bell towers and its massive buttresses which seem to emerge from the earth have inspired some of the most famous visual images of the 20* century. Georgia O'Keeffe painted the church many times; Paul Strand, Ansel Adams and Laura Gilpin left very sensitive and powerful photographs, capturing the forms and texture of the beautiful adobe church glowing in light. Today the Ranchos de Taos church is a vibrant catholic community. Every year at the beginning of June the church closes for two weeks and the whole community participates in El Enjare, donating time and labor to restore the adobe walls with fresh coats of mud. MIREYA CIRICI is a painter and photographer whose work expresses her passion for nature, traveling and the connection between people and place. Her artistic sensitivity developed while growing up in Spain immersed in the vibrant light and rich colors of the Mediterranean landscape. Robert Falk (1886-1958, Russia) original 1928 sailboat painting. Painting features red, yellow, and gray sailboat. Born into an educated family in Moscow in 1886, Robert Falk played the piano beautifully and at 16 was preparing to enter the Moscow Conservatory of Music. He had, however, shown a considerable aptitude and enthusiasm for drawing from a young age and 'in 1903 I was given oil paints and was once again strongly drawn towards art.' (quoted in D. Sarabianov & Iu. Didenko, Zhivopis' Roberta Falka. Polnyi katalog proizvedenii [Paintings by Robert Falk. Complete catalogue of works], Moscow, 2006, p. 37). Following this volte-face of sorts, Falk commenced his initial training under Konstantin Yuon and Ivan Dudin before studying in the studio of Ilya Mashkov from 1904-1905. In 1905 he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Like Mashkov, his former teacher and future co-member of the Bubnovy Valet [Jack of Diamonds], Falk was also taught by Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov, both of whom were to have a formative influence on his work. The youngest member of the Bubnovy Valet exhibiting society, one of the earliest manifestations of the Russian Avant-Garde, he was also one of its most active participants. A fervent follower of Cézanne, Falk's earliest works reveal his deep admiration for his country's 19th century landscape artists and in particular the work of Apollinary Vasnetsov and Isaak Levitan. While undoubtedly a masterful portrait painter, the landscape continued to be central to Falk's focus throughout his career. The present work was painted in 1923 in Vitebsk where Falk taught periodically from 1921 and was selected for inclusion in the artist's 1924 solo exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Appearing on the market for the first time in over three decades, Oak tree beautifully exemplifies Falk's distinctive creation of form built up via multiple layers of paint. His energetic brushwork, so aesthetically pleasing, is clearly visible on the surface of the painting. Typically for works of this period, it depicts a simple motif: that of an oak tree boldly rendered against a bright blue sky, the confined palette of predominantly blues and greens creating exactly the lyrical unity of which Falk spoke to Evsei Liubomirskii.
