In 1959 she again transferred to the Navy and served as a nurse in various hospitals around the world. She retired in 1973 while stationed at Beaufort Naval Hospital in South Carolina. Vietnam War US Army 1st Air Cavalry Division Prisoner of War Internee Pants. Named to Flight Surgeon Major Floyd H. Kushner of 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. (1) POW Pants. Pink cotton construction. Hand written note from Major Kushner gifting these pants to Sergeant Kuzniewski. Major Floyd H. Kushner began his Army career at the age of 26 after graduating from the University of North Carolina and Medical school at Medical College of VA. He began his internship at Tripler Army Med Center in Honolulu, HI. After a stint there, watching wounded soldiers from Vietnam come through, he realized he wanted more, and became a Flight Surgeon. Not long after graduating from the Army and Navy's aviation Medicine Program, he deployed to An Khe, Vietnam in August 1967. For the next four months, Kushner served with the 1-9th as their Flight Surgeon on several missions. On November 30, 1967, Kushner's helicopter was shot down while en route from Chu Lai to LZ Two Bits. Kushner was badly wounded, Pilot and Co-pilot severely injured or dead, with an unhurt crew chief. Three days later, the co-pilot died from his wounds, and the crew chief sent for help, only to be never seen again. Kushner had to act. He began his trek down the mountain, stumbling upon a local farmer who gave him shelter and food. One minute later he was surrounded by 14 Viet Cong soldiers and taken prisoner. Kushner would spend the next 5 1/2 years in captivity in various camps in the south and the north, enduring the wrath at the hands of the North Vietnamese. He was repatriated on March 16, 1973 and spent the next month in the hospital. Major Kushner remained on active duty until 1977, entering the reserves, and then retiring in 1986. Civil War Union Army Officer POW and Berdan's Sharpshooter Grouping. Named to Captain Abner Colby. Grouping includes hand written correspondence between Colby and his wife, marriage certificate, family letters, obituaries, insurance letters and genealogy report. Photocopies of Volunteer enlistment, company muster roll and more. (1) Berdan's Sharpshooter Medal, unnamed. (1) Ambrotype photo of Colby and another soldier. (1) GAR belt and buckle. (1) 1890's reprint of New York Herald April 15, 1865 edition, the day after Lincoln's assassination. And more. Captain Colby was born in Auburn, New Hampshire on May 1, 1830. He enlisted in the Union Army's 2nd Sharpshooter Volunteer Regiment October 1861. He was captured by the Confederate Army and was a POW in Florence, SC and Andersonville, GA in 1864. After his stint as a POW, Colby was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain in January 1865. He was eventually Discharged from Company U, 5th Infantry Regiment New Hampshire on June 21, 1865 in Concord, NH. He is listed on an 1870 census report in Manchester, New Hampshire, and again in 1900 in Newton, Massachusetts, serving as a fireman. His plane was shot down by German flak on May 5, 1943 during a bombing run over Rennes, France. Chester J Mayo was presumed dead between May 20 and May 29, 1943. MacKey was a Technical and Staff Sergeant and served as a Radio Operator in WWII for the 401st Bomb Group, 615th Bomb Squad. His Squadron was stationed in Deenethorpe, England. While flying a mission over southern France, MacKey's plane, B-17 #4240002 "Breezing Home", was shot down by German Flak Artillery. The crew bailed and were taken to a POW camp near Bordeaux before they were released to England. All members survived. He joined the Navy in March 1945 and was discharged the following October, serving in the 302nd Naval Construction Battalion. He returned to work at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the next 30 years working in numerous roles and projects, finally retiring in 1976. Lt. Commander Clair Lewis Patterson was born February 11, 1911 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. In September 1929 he enlisted in the Navy as an Apprentice Seaman. By December of 1941 Patterson became a Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class stationed on the Battleship, USS Tennessee. During the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor Patterson manned his battle station at one of the battle dressing stations on the Tennessee. After the initial attack he aided the survivors from the USS Arizona and USS West Virginia, as well as ferrying heavily wounded sailors to shore. In 1944 Patterson attended Officer Candidate School and became an Ensign. After WWII he was promoted to Lieutenant, and then later Lieutenant Commander. During the 1950's Patterson served on the hospital ship USS Consolation, US Naval Hospital Memphis, US Naval Hospital Key West, and more Navy hospitals and medical centers throughout the world. He retired in January of 1960 after 30 years of service. Patterson passed away in July of 2005 and is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina. (4) Newspaper clippings detailing POW experience for Coennen and his Family. George A. Coennen was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 23, 1901. He joined the US Army January 6, 1921, and was stationed in the Philippines where he met his wife, Josephine, a native Spaniard. Together they had 3 children, Carmen, Josephine and J.N. They lived at Camp John Hay, until the morning of December 8, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. After moving north to Luzon, the remaining army forces found themselves cut off. After a couple weeks, 30 soldiers broke through and connected with General Wainwright's forces and withdrew to Bataan. December 24, 1941 would be the last time Captain (then Master Sergeant) Coennen would see his family for the next three years. On April 10, 1942, the remaining forces surrendered and were taken prisoner, beginning the infamous Bataan Death March. Coennen watched men get tortured, dying daily from starvation, exhaustion or dehydration and experiencing the death march. Just prior to his capture with General Wainwright, Coennen accepted a commission as a 1st Lieutenant, and later a promotion to Captain, by General Wainwright. While the Captain was a POW, his family convinced the Japanese they were Filipino and were allowed to remain, but not without issues. The Japanese would take their food regularly, forcing them to bury some underground to avoid starvation. Mrs. Coennen, at one time was suspected of aiding Guerilla fighters, was taken prisoner for 21 days and questioned by the Japanese. She had to witness and participate in inmate torture. For three years, she moved around various convents and refugee points until she arrived at a cathedral at Baguio. In 1945, the Americans began bombing the Island in an effort to route the Japanese, however, the bombings injured many civilians, including Mrs. Coennen and her children. Wounded, they marched for 10 days to an American Camp where they found familiar faces. Finally, on April 6, Captain Coennen was reunited with his family after the camp in Bilibid, Manila was liberated. The Coennen family left the Philippines and moved back to the United States, settling in Prescott, Arizona. Captain Coennen retired with 25 years of Service and was discharged at Williams Field, in Chandler, Arizona. Provenance: Lifetime Military Memorabilia & Arms Collection of Peter L. Shortly after bailing out and safely landing he was taken prisoner. Grass was held at Stalag Luft I, North Compound I, Barracks 103/46 in Barth, Germany from the date of his capture until May 1, 1945 when liberated by the Soviets. Galasso's plane was shot down June 22, 1943 while on a bombing run over Huls, Germany. All crew members survived the crash, and were given shelter by a Dutch farmer until they were found by the Gestapo and sent to Stalag 17B in Krems, Austria. He spent over 22 months in the Stalag until he went on the "starvation march" with other allied POW's. Galasso was found near the town of Braunau May 2, 1945. WWII US Womens Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) Killed in Action Archive. Named to Hazel Ying Lee of class 43-W-4, who was the first Chinese-American woman to fly for the US military. Hazel Ying Lee was born August 12, 1912 in Portland, Oregon to Chinese immigrants. In 1932 Lee joined the Chinese Flying Club of Portland, which was set up by Al Greenwood in response to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. She soon graduated and became one of the the first Chinese American women to earn a pilot's license. She then moved to China to assist in the war effort. During her time in China she flew for private airlines until the 1937 Japanese invasion. She requested to fly in the Chinese Air Force, but was denied and given a desk job. She returned to the United States after the bombing of Canton. During this time she married Yin Cheung Louie, a Major in the Chinese Air Force and fellow Chinese American. In 1943 Lee was accepted into WASP class 43-W-4. She was assigned to the Third Ferrying Group in Michigan after graduation. In September 1944 Lee attended Pursuit school to deliver fighter aircraft. On November 23, 1944 Lee was landing a P-63 King Cobra in Great Falls, Montana when her plane collided with another aircraft. She succumbed to her injuries and died the next day. In 1945 Sparks was promoted to Ensign. During the Korean War Sparks served as an officer on the USS Redfish. Later he was a Lieutenant Commander in COMSUBDIV 11-43. Up to the outbreak of the Civil War Simpson Sr. took part in the Mexican-American War, the Brazil Squadron, and as an instructor at the Naval Academy. In 1861 he moved with the Naval Academy when they relocated to Rhode Island. In 1863 he took command of the ironclad monitor, USS Passaic, and took part in many bombardments of Southern coastal cities. Then again in 1865 as Fleet Captain of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. After the war he took command of various Naval Stations and made two trips to Europe for study. In 1884 Simpson Sr. was promoted to Rear Admiral and served as the President of the Naval Advisory Board. He retired in March 1884 and passed away December 1888. The destroyer USS Simpson (DD-221) was named in his honor. Rear Admiral Edward Simpson Jr. was born September 16, 1860. During the Spanish-American War Simpson Jr. served aboard the USS Brooklyn and took part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba and served aboard the USS Villalobos in the Philippines. Between May 18 and May 30, 1916 he served as the acting Naval Governor of Guam. He retired in 1924 and passed away September 6, 1930. After WWI Graybill became a High School teacher and taught in the Harrisburg, PA area for over 30 years. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1912, served in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and was honorably discharged in November 1916 with the rank of Private. Not even a month later Ellwanger re-enlisted in December 1916 and served as a Quartermaster Sergeant until he was once again honorably discharged on December 8, 1920. The next day Ellwanger re-enlisted for his 3rd enlistment and served in Haiti & Nicaragua from September 1921 to June 1923. He was discharged from his 3rd enlistment on December 8, 1924 as a Quartermaster Sergeant. Ellwanger again re-enlisted on the next day, December 9, 1924 and served ashore in Cuba from May 1926 to May 1928. On December 8, 1928 he was honorably discharged for the 4th time as a Quartermaster Sergeant and once again re-enlisted on December 9, 1928, but was made inactive and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve in December of 1932. Once the United States joined WWII, Ellwanger became active in the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve and served as a Quartermaster Clerk from July 1942 to September 1943, then as a Warrant Officer from October 1943 to February 1944, 2nd Lieutenant from March 1944 to May 1945, and finally as 1st Lieutenant from June 1945 to December 1946, after which Ellwanger retired. He enlisted in the Navy in February 1943. Hood served aboard the USS Salmon from June 10, 1943 to December 20, 1943, after which he transferred to the USS Scorpion. On January 3, 1944, the USS Scorpion departed Midway for her 4th and last patrol with Hood aboard. On the 5th of January, Scorpion rendezvoused with the USS Herring, and after her departure she was never seen or heard from again. It is assumed the Scorpion was lost to an enemy naval mine near the entrance to the Yellow Sea, but there is no definitive proof. Hood was declared missing on February 22, 1944 and killed in action on January 11, 1946. He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery, Philippines. On April 1, 1944, Rose was serving as a bombardier in B-24 #42-110046 during a mission over Germany. After the plane dropped its bombs it was straggling behind the main formation and was attacked by enemy fighters. Rose was heard over the intercom by his crewmates that he was hit by enemy fire was unable to bail out. He and five of his crewmates were killed in the crash near Hausen, Germany. Four others were able to bail out and were quickly captured. He is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold France, Plot D, Row 8, Grave 16. Sandstrom was born in 1925 in Connecticut and served with the 2047th Aviation Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon during WWII. On December 9, 1944, B-26 Marauder (42-107844) "Enema Patrol" of the 387th Bomb Group was damaged and forced to land at Advance Landing Ground A-71, Chastres, France. During the mission the bomber was not able to drop its bomb load, and immediately caught fire due to leaking fuel. The rescue crew, who were unaware that the bombs were still aboard, were able to pull out two crew members from the burning plane. While in the process of rescuing another, the bombs detonated, killing over 25 men instantly, including Sandstrom, and wounding many more. He is buried in Epinal American Cemetery, Epinal, France. Wagner was born November 29, 1920 in New Jersey. During WWII Wagner joined the USAAF and became a B-24 pilot assigned to the 720th Bomb Squadron. On April 5, 1944 Wagner was piloting his B-24 during a raid on the German railroad yards in Pleosti, Romania when his plane was shot down by enemy fighters. While making sure the rest of his crew could bail out, the plane exploded before he could exit himself. He is buried in Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, New Jersey. Stewart, Pilot of the B-17G #42-31669 "Shoo Shoo Baby" Bomber, 358th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. (1) Named Purple Heart medal. Includes lapel pin, ribbon and original case. (1) 3" Sterling silver Pilot Wings. Maker marked by A.S. Co and "Sterling" on the reverse. (2) USAAF and "US" Officer collar insignia. (1) Gold plated sword scarf pin with locket. (1) ID Card. Also included are personal correspondence, newspapers, postcards and pamphlets. 1st Lieutenant Paul Stewart served as a 2nd and 1st Pilot in the USAAF in the B-17G #42-31669 "Shoo Shoo Baby" Bomber, 358th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. He is credited with piloting seven bombing missions into Germany. On April 24, 1943, Mission #140 to Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, Stewart's B-17 was struck by Anti-Aircraft fire and was heavily damaged. Struggling to keep formation, Stewart turned the plane towards Neutral Switzerland in hopes to avoid capture. However, the German Luftwaffe targeted the straggling bomber with a nose attack, presumably killing Stewart and crewman. With no radio response from the nose and the bomb bay on fire, the remaining crew bailed out of the B-17 moments before it entered a spiral dive and crashed near Gross-Seeham outside Munich. The surviving crew were immediately captured and interned at Stalag 17-B. The remains of the crashed bomber crew were reportedly buried in a mass grave in the nearby village of Holzolling. Ferguson was born December 8, 1920. During WWII Ferguson was stationed at Podington Airbase in the UK with 407th BS, 92nd BG of the 8th Air Force. On June 14, 1944 Ferguson was serving as the Radio Operator in B-17G #42-107163 in a raid over mainland Europe. A few miles south of Paris his bomber was hit directly by flak on the right wing. The entire crew was able to successfully bail out and parachute safely to the ground. Three of the crew members were able to evade capture, and six were taken as POWs, including Ferguson. He was held at Stalag Luft IV in Pomerania until he was moved to Wöbbelin concentration camp near Ludwigslust, Germany. After the war Ferguson was repatriated to the US and passed away in September 1981. He is buried in the National Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona. In July 1937 he joined VMF-2 as a Technical Sergeant. In May 1941 he was promoted to Master Technical Sergeant and took part in the defense of Ewa Field during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nine aircraft of VMF-211 Ewa Field detachment were destroyed and one officer and two enlisted men were wounded during the attack. He moved to the United States and joined the Army National Guard in 1940. His first unit was the 106th Infantry. After a troublesome AWOL time, he was punished and reassigned to the 186th Field Artillery Battalion, and then the 641st Tank Destroyer Battalion as a Machine Gunner bound the for the Pacific. Donahue transferred to the AAF between April 1942 and May 1943. His final assignment was as a waist gunner aboard the B-17F-20-BO "Black Jack / The Joker's Wild" Bomber, piloted by Captain Harry A. Staley. The B-17 "Black Jack" is most famously known for sinking the Japanese Destroyer Hayashio, utilizing the Skip-Bombing technique, in November 1942. On July 11, 1943, piloted by a different officer (Captain De Loach) and crew (Donahue was not on board), The "Black Jack" was on a routine bombing mission of an airfield in Rabaul, when it experienced engine problems. Caught in a violent storm, malfunctioning engines and out of fuel, the crew was forced to ditch in the sea. They ended up splashing down near the village of Boga Boga, Papua New Guinea. The crew was rescued and the "Black Jack" sunk to the ocean floor. It was not until 1986, scuba diver Rodney Pierce discovered the B-17, almost completely intact with all its armaments. The series of events was later turned into a documentary about the discovery and the return of its Captain, Ralph K. De Loach, to the crash site. Plestine is mentioned as KIA by a German mob. (1) Binder filled with research documents of the B-17, KIA honor roll, photocopy of the 457th BG mission board, and Mission#139 story. 1st Lieutenant Samuel A. Plestine was born October 6, 1922. He served as a Navigator on the B-17 #42-97899 in the 750th Bomb Squadron, 457th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. On October 25, 1944, Mission #139 for the 36 planes of the 457th BG began. Their objective was to bomb oil refineries and marshalling yards in Hamburg, Germany in an effort to cripple the German Army. On the final approach, Plestine's B-17, piloted by Lieutenant John F. Angier, was struck by several burst of flak artillery. The B-17 suffered massive damage, was engulfed in flames and engine #3 separated from the plane. Lieutenant Angier angled the bomber in a dive in an attempt to douse the flames, but sadly blew up only minutes after recovering. The entire crew was reportedly able to evacuate. Lt. Angier, who later overheard German guards speaking, believed Plestine was beaten to death by German civilians. Staff Sergeant Bertil Carlson was born on December 20th, 1920 in Providence, Rhode Island . He served as an Airplane Mechanic and Gunner in the 112th AAF Base Unit assigned to the 328th Bomb Squadron. During a bombing mission on November 18th, 1943, the aircraft Staff Sergeant Carlson was on, went down over the neutral country of Sweden. Beahm was able to successfully escape his sinking plane and board a life raft. Later Beahm and the other survivors were picked up by a US Coast Guard PBM-5 Sea Plane while in heavy seas and under enemy fire from the shore. Due to the hazardous conditions the rescue plane crashed during take-off and Beahm was declared Missing in Action and later presumed dead on September 15, 1955. (1) Wound stripe patch with two bullion wound stripes. (9) Uniform buttons. Edward Cantey De Saussure was born March 13, 1891, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1904, he relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he attended public school. In 1908, De Saussure worked for the American Naval Stores Company and joined the Florida National Guard. At the US Entry into WWI, he applied for admission to an Army Officer Training Camp. Due to his prior service, he was accepted and was commissioned into the Officer Reserve Corps. 90 days later, he received orders to the 82nd Division to command a Machine Gun Company in the 328th Infantry Division. After several months of training in the US and Britain, De Saussure's Regiment finally entered the trenches on July 5, 1918 on the Woevre front in the Lagny Sector. In September, the 82nd Division was ordered to take part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. During the offensive, on October 14, De Saussure was leading his Machine Gun Company in combat when he was wounded by shrapnel in his hand. He was evacuated off the front lines, but only for a short time. After he received medical attention, De Saussure ripped off his wounded tag, eager to return to command his men on the front. During his attempt, he was struck and killed by a bursting artillery shell. On that same day, the 328th regiment had 92 wounded and 29 killed. The 82nd Division had over 6,000 casualties during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. By the end of October, the 82nd Division was relieved, and did not return to combat before the Armistice. 1st Lieutenant De Saussure is one of the very few officers from Florida that were killed; only about 4% of casualties from the state were officers. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Plot B, Row 33, Grave 22.
