Contains are either part of the 4 Gospels or a shortened version of the Miracles of Mary, whose name is features frequently in red lettering. 32mo. Black and red lettering handwritten in Ge'ez. 49 vellum leaves. Later wooden board covers. Hand bound. 5 hand painted illustrations in polychromy, depicting the Madonna and Christ Child and the angel with Mary. Housed in carved wooden box. The legendary tales that make up the Miracles of Mary flourished in medieval Europe. During the Crusades, the compilation of stories made its way to the Near East. In Ethiopia, translated from Arabic into Ge'ez as the Ta'amra Maryam, it absorbed local settings and history and quickly established itself as one of the Ethiopian Coptic Church's most important and popular devotional and liturgical texts. Condition: Scratches and stains on wooden boards. Warping of vellum margins, minor soiling. Damp staining on to corner edges of several leaves.

[Manuscript/Civil War] Three ALS written in search of Private William T. Tweedy of the 4th Georgia Regiment, Company G, who was killed at Antietam on September 1862. After being mortally wounded Private Tweedy died at Antietam and was buried in an unmarked location. These letters originate in Augusta. Georgia. The first letter is from Tweedy's brother-in-law, Dr. Benjamin Hall Brodnax, asking their cousin, Rev. Charles Henry Hall, in help locating the burial spot and possible return of the body to Georgia. The second and third letters are from Rev. John Barrett Kerfoot, Head Master at College of St. James near Hagerstown, Maryland. The letters discuss the search for Tweedy's body, which was never located. Condition: Fold marks visible on all three letters. Light toning visible on the verso of paper.

[Manuscript/Civil War] Three manuscript letters dated 1862 regarding the arrest of a Mrs. Burchett, New Orleans. She was arrested in the summer of 1862 and confessed to “carrying correspondence between secessionists and their friends” in New Orleans. She had carried the mail across Lake Pontchartrain. By order of General Benjamin Butler, she was committed to Ship Island as a prisoner. Having apparently frightened Mrs. Burchett sufficiently, Butler shortly ordered her sentence remitted and her baggage restored. Three ms. letters, all New Orleans, Aug. 30, 1862-September 1, 1862. Two on letterhead of “Headquarters Department of the Gulf.” Butler had a bad reputation with the women of the South, having earlier ordered that any woman in New Orleans who disrespected Union soldiers would be arrested as a prostitute. Two of these letters were noted in Scriber's "Ship Island, Mississippi: Rosters and History of the Civil War Prison", 2007. Condition: Fold marks visible. Toning on papers. [Manuscript/Civil War] War Relic from the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, May 12, 1864. The tree from which this piece was taken stood in front of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Virginia. This piece was taken from the tree in July 1864, by a soldier who took place in the battle. The stump is in the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. The small piece of tree is attached to a memorial card with an explanation of the battle and dedication to James Burrows, formerly Co. H, 16th Mass. Vols and Co. C. 1st U.S. V.V. Tree piece is 1 1/4" long. Paper size: 5 1/2" x 4 1/2". This stump of the tree where this relic is from, was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1888 by Brevet Major General Nelson A. Miles. [Manuscript/Civil War] Prisoner of War letter from Andersonville, Georgia. Written by Private Thomas Ashbury Gossett who mustered into Co. I, 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in 1831 and mustered out in 1865. He was captured at the Battle of Mine Run in Orange Virginia on November 30, 1863. he wrote this letter during his time as a POW in Andersonville, Georgia to his family. He was released on November 1, 1864. Letter is written in ink on faintly lined paper. Sheet size : 5" x 7 3/4". Included is a newspaper clipping with a letter written to the editor by Gossett talking about his time as a POW. "Andersonville, GA. July 21st 1864. Re. N.W. Gossett. Rotalton, Ind. Written in Camp Carroll, Head Quarters of General in Buckeystown, Maryland. and is a detailed look at the early campaigning of the Union Army in 1861. [Manuscript/Ephemera] 3 letters from John Hooe ( 1795-1845), a state legislator from the Virginia House of Delegates showing his volatile temper. Letters are dated between April 1823 and November 1828. Hooe was arrested in 1827 for violating Virginia's anti-dueling laws. Hisa anger at a man named Lewis, who was absent in Kentucky, lingered, however. When Lewis returns to the county, "I shall without delay take steps to bring the affair to that issue heretofore contemplated." D. Lewis, his brother, "has so deported himself towards me...as will make a call necessary from me upon him. A combat either with one or the other of them, if not both, is unavoidable." "..The annals of rascality fade far short of furnishing examples of treachery like theirs - search the gaols, the public work-houses, the dungeons of the nation - it could not cast out such a set of villains." The letters range in date between 1898-1921. ++ May 21, 1898. Petroglyphs copied from "boulders and rock shelves on Crooks Peak Range of Mountains 12 miles north of Demings New Mexico." Sheet size: 5 1/8" x 8. ++ July 4, 1901. Letter to Chittenden's sister Emma. Written while in New Marlborough, MA. updating his sister on family news. Sheet size: 8" x 10 1/2". ++ September 13, 1904. Has illustrations of a kangaroo mouse he saw and on the verso of the sheet a poem critical of bullfighting, dated August 21, 1905. Sheet size: 6 1/2" x 8 5/16". ++ Undated letter, one page. Talks about the mosquitoes, comparing the ones in Connecticut to those in California. Also makes a note to mention the people in British Columbia wanted them exterminated. The letter covers family news, books that he has been reading, relationship's with the Native Americans as well as drawings of animals that he has seen. Written to his sister Emma, the letter includes family news and updates on his lectures in schools and colleges. Attached with this letter is a piece of beaded moccasin, 3 1/4" x 2 3/4". The letter states that this part of the moccasin is the vamp, and these pieces were sometimes cut out to be saved or re-purposed. This piece maybe from Prairie/Plains provinces in Canada. [Manuscript/Ehemera] Dora Walker, “The Lost Generation - a Nurse’s Diary,” a manuscript account of Walker’s service as a nurse in France and Belgium during World War One. This remarkable record recounts Walker’s time as a nurse on the western front, with numerous anecdotes of the war, encounters with famous people and service under brutal conditions. Field Marshal General Sir Douglas Haig asked her before one offensive, “Are you ready for patients? You’ll need to be.” “We were,” Walker replied, “and they began to come in like water through a sand bank, then increasing in tempt till it was like a flood.” The wounded of both sides were treated. Among the Allies, there were British, Sikhs, Maoris, New Zealanders, etc. “I nursed them all, black, brown, and white. There was no talk of color then.” The remarkable Walker – nurse, author, pilot through World War One minefields, and North Sea boat captain – penned this document of “approx. 14,400 words” on 23 large pages in blue ink. Folded, with revision marks. Fine condition.

[Photography] 2 Carte de Visite of Lee and Davis. (1) Jefferson Davis CDV after James E. McClees portrait of 1858, with Jefferson dress in a Major General's uniform. J.H. Bigelow, 212 Broadway, New York, c. early 1861. An early example of photoshop used to lampoon the newly elected Major General of the Army of Mississippi and shortly after President of the Confederacy. Photography shops in New York took several original glass plate negatives of Davis's portrait executed by other photographers and then manipulated them with paint to alter Davis’ frock into a military uniform bearing the shoulder straps of a major general. Having no reference to the design of a Confederate uniform, the frock style borrowed from the federal style. Shortly after resigning from the Senate on Jan. 21st, on Jan. 23, Davis arrived in Jackson, Miss., and accepted the commission as major general of the Mississippi army, which received by a letter from Gov. John J. Pettus dated Dec. 31, 1860. He would hold this command until elected President of the Confederacy on Feb. 18. Measures: 2 1/2" x 4 3/16" (2) Robert E. [Civil War/Slavery] Confederate Impressment Receipt, Headquarters Army of the Confederate States, Department of Lt.-Gen Polk dated July 10, 1864. Impressment for 1 slave, named Isaac, for emergency at Ft. Morgan - Volunteered and to be returned promptly, signed by Capt. C.R. Sherman, impressment agent of Baldwin County, Alabama, received from W.D. Hall. Written in pencil with a strong hand. Framed: 15 3/4" x 12 7/8". An rare piece of Confederate history, showing the reliance on slave labor to maintain the war efforts late in the Civil War. Isaac was impressed to work on bolstering the defenses of Fort Morgan which, in less than a month of this documents date, would be sieged upon in the Battle of Mobile Bay by Admiral Farragut and his U.S. forces. Unable to properly maintain its army, the Confederacy resorted to the system of impressment, taking private property for its own use. And while the government seized general war supplies, such as weaponry and food articles, it also took slaves. Impressed slaves were contracted into hard labor, such as building military defenses, with receipts like the ones shown here, made out to slave owners promising payment for the use of their human property. Many owners were never paid, as the Confederate economy crumbled. Often, impressed slaves were sickly, injured, or dead upon return to their masters. Listed alongside bacon and axes, slaves became just another war supply, as they were forced to help build defenses for a government committed to maintaining slavery. Condition: Minor toning, crease fold to middle, some old stains. Not examined out of frame.

An Era of Progress and Promise documents topics discussed and explored at the Clifton Conference, held August 18-20, 1908 at the home of W. N. Hartshorn in Clifton, Massachusetts. Conference attendees came from thirty-four African American educational institutions, seventeen states, and nine missionary organizations. The conference explored education, religion, and social status of African Americans in the United States at that time since emancipation. The book contains a profusion of illustrations and information about a number of educational institutions, including thirty-four institutions in North Carolina alone. A scarce book on the progress of Emancipation in post-Reconstruction America and the South. Condition: Moderate rubbing and wear, hinges cracked, final index leaf loose from binding but present.

Original black cloth backed boards. Prints created by 13 boys and 1 girl of African-American and Italian descent at a The Children's Studio of The Playhouse Settlement. One of only 2 publication issued by the Playhouse Settlement, the other being print book Nursery Rhymes executed by the Children's Studio. The Playhouse Settlement, now know as the Karamu House, is the nation's oldest African American theater. Founded by Russell and Rowena Woodham Jelliffe and the Men's Club of the Second Presbyterian Church in 1915, the Settlement served as a relief organization to incoming influx of working class Slavic, Italian and African American settlers to the Cleveland area. The Playhouse Settlement quickly became a magnet for some of the best African-American artists dancers, printmakers, actors, and writers of their day. The Jelliffes held high standards of excellence in the arts, seeing it as the perfect common ground to bring differing people of the community together. The Playhouse Settlement became an active contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, and Langston Hughes roamed the Settlement’s halls constantly. Condition: Minor wear, some chipping to edges of boards. [Local Interest/Urban Planning] Mackey, Howard. A Co-Operative Apartment [Arch 123: Major Project #1]. Washington, D.C. Issued March 29, 1932. [1]p typed proposal, official copy on Howard University letterhead, with 3 original penciled architectural drawings. These documents were part of an initiative to convert a blighted lot in Washington, D.C. into a co-operative community, tentatively known as "Howard City." The plan was unsuccessful, and folded in 1936. 10 pencil drawings total in three clasped booklets. Architectural plans drawn by Hilyard Robert Robinson, a prominent African-American architect and engineer who also taught at Howard University. Condition: Some edgewear to cover sheet, with corner crease, tiny edge tears. Minimal chipping to drafting papers. Overall very well preserved. Pencil strokes are well defined and without smudging.

[Americana/Louisiana Purchase] (Tucker, St. George). Reflections on the Cession of Louisiana to the United States by Sylvestris. Washington City: Samuel Harrison Smith, 1803. Dated August 10, 1803 on final text page. 8vo. 27p., Original wraps. First edition. An enthusiastic review of the Louisiana Purchase In the present pamphlet, Tucker lists the advantages of the Louisiana Purchase, but also cautions that emigration into the new territory should be restricted, so as not to compromise the population of the eastern seaboard. Of note is Tucker's suggestion that Congress "obtain from Spain a cession of that part of West Florida, it being "worthy of an amendment to the Constitution to incorporate that territory. Tucker would predict national policy suggesting settling the lands of the new territory with the Native Americans. Radically, and in Tucker's character as an abolitionist, he states a "Utopian idea" to use "the southern parts of Louisiana bordering upon the gulph of Mexico lie under a climate more favourable for the African constitution than any part of the United States. Thither, if under the auspices of a divine Providence, the great work of the abolition of slavery should be accomplished in Virginia, or other southern states, we may colonize those unhappy people, whom our ancestors have brought in chains from their native county, and we continue to hold in bondage." preceding Robert Finley and the American Colonial Society in proposing a colony for freed slaves. He additionally recommended using the lands for exiles and criminals. St. George Tucker was born in Port Royal, Bermuda, to English colonists. In 1772, he moved to Virginia to study law under George Wythe. During the American Revolutionary War, he was commissioned into the Virginia militia, and when the war ended, resumed his legal career. In 1788, he was elected by the legislature as a judge of the General Court of Virginia in Richmond, and served until 1803, when he was appointed to the state Supreme Court of Appeals. In 1813, President James Madison appointed Tucker as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Virginia. The Navigator, containing Directions for Navigating the Monongahela, Allegheny, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; with an ample account of these much admired waters, from the head of the former to the mouth of the latter... Pittsburgh: Cramer, Spear and Eichbaum, 1817. Ninth edition, first published in 1802, with the first account of the Lewis and Clark expedition included in the edition of 1808 (the sixth edition). The first navigational guide to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The "Advertisement" to the 1811 edition (the eighth) describes the Navigator as being "a useful and necessary guide to those who navigate or trade on the rivers of which it treats much pains have been taken to revise, correct and enlarge it throughout; to do this satisfactorily, we have had the assistance of several of the most eminent pilots and navigators, and the use of late manuscript journals of gentlemen of observation, to whom we present our compliments for their aid and politeness. At a very considerable expense, the maps of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers have been added; and we flatter ourselves with the hope that they will be found as useful to the navigator as they have been troublesome to us. the account of the Missouri and Columbia rivers, as traversed by Captains Lewis and Clark, under the directions of the president of the United States, though but a brief view of that interesting voyage, we hope will be found entertaining. [Americana] Nicollet, Joseph North. Report Intended to Illustrate a Map of the Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi River. Washington: Blair & Rives, 1843. 8vo. With large folding map of Mississippi Basin/ 170 pp. Large folding engraved map measuring 90.3x76.8 cm (35½x30¼"). Modern blue cloth rebound; ex-library (Riggs, Georgetown), with stamps on modern endpapers but no stamps or markings on the original document, which is bright and clean with minimal foxing. This extremely important map is the first accurate map of the interior region stretching from St. Louis north to the international boundary. The map was compiled by Lt. W. H. Emory (under the direction of Col. J. J. Albert) from the surveys of J. N. Nicollet, who was assisted by Lt. J. C. Fremont; thus, bringing together some of the most important names in the history of American mapping in the 19th century. Nicollet, already a noted French scientist and topographer, was chosen to lead this expedition during 1838 to 1840. The map reflects, for the first time, the use of the barometer to obtain elevations and the use of place names on maps based on a systematic analysis of Indian and French names. It is the first truly scientific topographical survey of the interior of North America. Contemporary cartographer, Lt. G. K. Warren, called it "one of the greatest contributions ever made to American geography." Lithographed by C. B. Graham and printed on two joined sheets. Contains the texts printed in the French edition of El Moudjahid, placed in chronological order with an analytical index at the end of each volume. Includes facsimiles of the cover of each issue of the journal, followed by reprints of the articles contained within. Contains all the issues from 1-91 covering the Alergian War for Independence. Numbers 5 and 6 were unavailable to the publishers at the time of publication, and thus are not included; number 7 was never published. 4to. Original boards. El Moudjahid served as an FLN guerrilla information bulletin during the 1954-62 Algerian War. Though the name immediately insinuates a religious connotation, to remove any religious connotation from the title, the first 7 issues of the newspaper included the subtitle Le Combattant, which is the non-religious French translation. Additionally, the newspaper specified in its first issue (under the pen of Abane Ramdane ) that: “By calling itself El Moudjahid , this brochure only consecrates this glorious name that the common sense of our people has had since the 1 November 1 , 1954 attributed to the patriots who took up arms for a free, independent and democratic Algeria." El Moudjahid never published the names of its editorial team and, with rare exceptions, the articles were never signed, such exections being Number 3 in response to the Soummam Congress by Ramdane Abane (editorial), Krim Belkacem and Mohammed Larbi Ben M' Hidi, international supportors and Fanon's conference reports. Otherwise, the editorials were signed “El Moudjahid” or “The direction of El Moudjahid”. Frantz Fanon would served as an editor for the bulletin as well as write essays and articles anonymously. Twenty of Fanon's essays in El Moudjahid describing how to oppose colonialism and how to active work to end it would be collected posthumously in his work Toward the African Revolution in 1964. The book, presumably, was signed during or after his transition to franchise owner, a position which he held for many years. He was also responsible for negotiating the team's move to Minnesota in 1960. Bob Wolff, the bottom most signature on the ffep, was the TV and radio voice of the Senators from 1947 to 1960. The exactness of the work's content, however, has not been confirmed through a definitive bibliography. Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente, also known as Girolamo Fabrizio or Hieronymus Fabricius (20 May 1533 – 21 May 1619), was a pioneering anatomist and surgeon known in medical science as "The Father of Embryology." This work scarcely surfaces outside of institutions. Condition: Dampstaining. Marks on the front. scattered foxing. Textblock is tanned, pages supple. Copious amounts of writing, contemporary, filling the blank ffep front and back. Some marginalia throughout; plates are unmarked, writing never extends to text. Scheiner (ca. 1573-1650) was a German Jesuit priest, an astronomer, and a physicist. He was credited for inventing the pantograph, an instrument for copying plans on any scale, during 1603-5 while he was training as a teacher in Dillingen. His results were published in this work in 1631. Condition: Soiling to vellum, old clasp punctures to foreedge of initial pages, extending from the front endpapers to the first table of contents, affecting seven leaves total but not intruding past the margins; front endpapers very loose but holding; binding elsewhere fine; one leaf torn (pp. 87-88) with material loss in excess of 50% including text; else no loss in contents noted; previous owner inscriptions and notes, contemporary to 20th c.; light dampstaining to center textblock.

Gift inscription on front pastedown to Mademoiselle Anne Marie Nelis, dated 9th Jan. 1908 Bhopal C. India, from a Professor at Wilson College in Bombay. Begum Nawab Sikandar of Bhopal became the first Muslim woman to publish an account of her pilgrimage to Mecca. In 1863, Sikandar was the first Indian monarch to perform Hajj. She was accompanied by about 1,000 people, mostly women. In her memoir of her trip, written in Urdu, she wrote that the cities of Mecca and Jeddah were "unclean" and the Arabs and the Turks were "uncivilised" and "possessed no religious knowledge." Also included in the memoir is an anecdote about her confrontation with Turkish customs officials who wanted to levy duties on everything she brought. Condition: Minor wear to edges.

Gillis was a close friend of Mark Twain's. In fact, the two men lived together in a cabin on Jackass Hill in Angels Camp, which Gillis maintained until his death a few years after this booklet was published. Angels Camp is located in California gold rush territory, in Calaveras County, where Twain wrote "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", the story that made him famous. Gillis's half-biography, half-memoir recounts the early days of his brother Steve, Mark Twain, and others in and around Angels Camp and the nearby boomtown of San Francisco during the gold rush days in mid-19th century California. [WWII] FIRST EXTANT DRAFT COPY OF JAPANESE INSTRUMENT OF SURRENDER IN ENGLISH. DATED AUG. 31 1945, stamped 1945 AUG 31 1 20, prior to the official ceremony on the 2nd of September. Draft of Surrender document about 85% compatible with the document as signed during the ceremony. Dated on the originally agreed upon date for the surrender of Japanese as dictated in the documents from the August 19th Surrender summit in Manila, Philippines. The date would be pushed back to the 2nd due to poor weather that impeded the preparations outlined. These 23 pages are raw cables from the transmitted messages from the Pacific Front to the Communications Intelligence Organization (Op-20-G). Such transmissions would be the first to be received and then discarded after they would be entered in officially. The first 8 slips contain Japanese Instrument of Surrender as follows, with a few alterations to the final document as signed as well as a few missed words as noted: H 31 AUG 45 / Nimine DE Kasuke / BT We acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan - tre[sic] Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters - hereby accept the provisions in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States - China and Great Britain - on 26 July 1945 at Potsdam - and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - which four - powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers. BT2 We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Representatives of Japanese Armed Forces and all Arme [sic] Forces under Japanese Control wherever ituted [sic] under our command. (2 letter correction) BT8 The authority of the Emperor and the Japanese Government to rule the state shall be subject to the Supreme Commander fqr[sic] the Allied Powers who will take such steps as he deems proper to effectuate these terms of surrender - ve This final leaf is stamped with the date 1945 AUG 31 3 23, each leaf stamped with Charles A. Jensen in purple. Charles Andrew Jensen (1916-2007), served during World War II in the United States Navy in Communications Intelligence working on incoming encrypted Japanese messages as an Ensign, resigning in 1948 with the rank of Lieutenant. On August 15, Emperor Hirohito gave a recorded radio address across the Empire on 15 August announcing the surrender of Japan to the Allies in accordance and accepting the terms outlined by the Potsdam Declaration. As the Allies begin to plan the occupation of Japan, Truman would sign off on an Aug. 18th memorandum stating that the U.S. would be committed to "the principle of united action," but would keep the position of control. This would give the United States the principal roles in crafting and planning the surrender of Japan as well as how the occupation would work out, with assistance by the Allied Powers. After the diplomatic delegation met in Manila on the 19th and 20th of August to work out the terms of the surrender and occupation, General MacArthur anticipated that, subject to weather conditions which would permit the necessary air and naval operations, the Instrument of Surrender would be signed within ten days (August 31st). "It is my earnest hope," he announced after the departure of Japan's representatives from Manila, "that pending the formal accomplishment of the Instrument of Surrender, armistice conditions may prevail on every front and that bloodless surrender may be effectuated." This draft copy of the Surrender has an interesting point that it repeatedly dictates that the surrendering to the United States and the Allied Powers and subsequent occupation of Japan will be to the Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet in control, who at the time would have be Admiral Nimitz, instead of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, who later be General Douglas MacArthur as agreed upon by the Allied Powers on Oct. 1, 1945. This may have been an oversight by either the Japanese delegation or even the U.S. delegation at the peace conference held in Manila on the 20th of August, or thinking MacArthur held both titles in the military. Paragraphs noted as BT4, BT5 and BT6 have the most comparable differences to the final document. The additional documents detail the progression of the surrender and arrival preparations of the MacArthur delegation. One documents the trouble in preparations for the arrival of the SCAP by the Japanese Government, dated Aug 24th, due to difficulties brought on by Tropical Storm Grace (noted as Typhoon in the communique). Per the original 4 documents agreed upon and taken back to Japan by the Manila Delegation, SCAP stated that the acceptance of the surrender of the Japanese armed forces would occur in Tokyo Bay aboard a United States battleship on 31 August and such weather would delay the arrival of the occupation forces, MacArthur and the surrender ceremony. One document received and partially transposed from code, shows the agreement of the Government of Japan, using their delegates in Manila to hand over information of POW camps, noted in Document I of the Requirements of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers Presented to the Japanese Representatives at Manila, P. I., on 19 August 1945, which called for the Japanese surrender delegation to be prepared to furnish all available information pertaining to “prisoner of war and civilian internment camps and places of detention, wherever located, within Japan and Japanese controlled areas.” 3 pages detail the Japanese response and acceptance of the cessations of hostilities issued by Japanese commanders to their forces and the progress being made within the Japanese conquered sphere to SPAC, though it mentioned the Attacks by Soviet and Mongolian forces. Several parts of the raw cables are not completely decoded or have slight errors noted. No examples of an early draft of the Japanese Surrender are readily available or present in institutions or the National Archives. Please see Reports of General MacArthur , 1950 (1994 reprint). [Maps & Globes] ca. 1863 16.5" terrestrial globe. Maker unknown; presumed American. The globe is not dated, but the presence of the territory of Idaho, created in March of 1863 and bordering Washington and Oregon on the west and Dakota territory to the east, would indicate that it was manufactured between 1863 and March of 1864, at which time the Montana territory was established and border lines were redrawn. Most notable features are the labeling of Alaska as "Russian America" (before 1868) and the vast unmarked spaces in Africa. Interestingly, the globe has several anomalies that would attribute it to an earlier period e.g. "Van Dieman Land" (so. of Australia), which became Tasmania, and no mention of Lake Victoria (discovered by John Speke in 1857).This was likely an error or deliberate omission by the manufacturer; the globe modeled on an earlier design but updated to reflect the rapidly changing shifts in U.S. geography. There is a figure-eight analemma in the Pacific Ocean. The globe has a brass meridian ring; no stand. Condition: Generally good; restored at some point, possibly amateur with some uneven paint application; expected light toning, wear and scattered surface cracks and abrasions. overall retains a golden antique tone and bright colors.
