Very original and in excellent condition for age. Desirable manual transmission. Rotary engine with twin headlights. Some history (vendor notes): I purchased the vehicle in May 1997 from the original owner's granddaughter, with 70,234 miles on the odometer. The car was registered in the granddaughter's name, who was given the vehicle to travel to university. The original owner purchased it in his retirement in November 1973 from Max Kirwin Mazda and gave it up to his granddaughter's elder years. Unfortunately, the family did not retain the original records of when the car was purchased in 1973. The car was running the original motor reconditioned by Mazda under warranty at some time in the 70s'. The car was my daily driver till 2002 and during this time the only maintenance was the Twin distributor 12A engine refreshed by Larry Kogge because it was smokey. I stopped using it as a daily driver in 2002 and put it into storage and it was put back on the road in 2017 with club registration. In 2017/18 the car has some preventative maintenance done on the suspension, steering gearbox, and differential. In September 2020 I had the Twin distributor 12A engine completely rebuilt. As part of the rebuild the engine I swapped the factory 4BBL with a 48IDA Weber and factory Mazda cast iron exhaust header. Issy Sveticic of Selectmaz undertook all of this work. This car is a genuine surviving example of this model. It has never been involved in an accident and to this day, has 100% original factory paint, interior trim, carpet, boot mat exhaust pipe, plastic on most of the door trims and the sun visors. There is a small 5mm rust bubble on the rear left-hand dog leg when I purchased it which has not changed. Mazda’s mid-sized model, known as the Capella in conventional piston-engined form and the RX2 when fitted with the Mazda Wankel rotary engine, was introduced in May 1970 and in first-generation form, was produced until 1978. Available in four-door and two-door coupe bodies, the first models all had rectangular headlights, while the rotary-engined models received round twin headlamps beginning in October 1971. From 1972 all models received the double headlamps. The taillight design was changed repeatedly over the production run. In Japan, the installation of a rotary engine gave buyers a financial advantage when it came time to pay the annual road tax in that they bought a car that was more powerful than a traditional inline engine, but without having the penalty for having an engine in the higher 1.5-liter tax bracket. This first-generation Capella/RX2 was the only generation that had the rotary engine offered. The name Fordson is generally associated with tractors but Ford of England rather cleverly decided to apply it also to all commercial and agricultural vehicles produced in Dagenham, Essex for consumption in the UK and export markets. Introduced in 1938, the forward-control Fordson E83W van was also available as a pick-up or estate car and was sold in Australia as the Fordson Ten-Ten. During WW2 the E83W was adapted to fulfil roles such as mobile canteens, fire tenders, and ambulances. The Fordson was powered by Ford's ubiquitous 1,172cc side-valve engine with a 3-speed gearbox and low-ratio rear axle; the latter enabled it to cope with the 10cwt maximum payload, though it did restrict top speed to little more than 40 miles per hour. Somewhat surprisingly, apart from the engine, gearbox internals, and some switchgear, no mechanical components were shared with the contemporary Ford Ten saloon, while the van’s forward-control layout meant that its chassis and body panels were unique to the model. It was equipped with heavier-duty axles than Ford’s small cars and even shared some mechanical componentry with V8 models including the Pilot. The E93W was manufactured until 1958, latterly under the Ford Thames brand name, by which time over 188,000 had been made. William Morris founded Morris Commercial Cars Ltd in 1924 following his takeover of the assets of E G Wrigley & Co. in Birmingham, formerly a supplier of axles and steering sets used in early Morris Oxfords. Located in Foundry Lane, the factory was converted to produce a range of commercial vehicles, beginning with the Type T one-ton truck in the early months of 1924. Most of these vehicles were powered by Morris’ own engines, including the 15.9 hp 2.5-litre side-valve unit developed specifically for the Z-type truck in 1926, which also found its way into the Oxford Empire, a larger car designed for countries like Australia and South Africa. The second Morris Commercial after the T was designated the Type L and featured the Hotchkiss-type 1548cc four-cylinder engine rated at 11.9 hp, a three-speed gearbox and magneto ignition. With a load capacity of 12 cwt, the L was built in both van and truck versions on a standard 9ft 6in wheelbase. Around this time Morris also introduced the bigger 30 cwt R Type lorry, which also used the 1548cc four-cylinder engine. The Morris Commercial Cars operation relocated to the former Wolseley factory at Adderley Park in Birmingham in 1932, with the first double-decker bus and famous C-type range of commercials both produced there. During the Second World War production focused almost entirely on military vehicles, including tanks and componentry for Rolls-Royce Merlin and Griffin engines. Post-war rationalisation saw Morris Motors merged with the Austin Motor Co. and the introduction of the famous and long-running J-type vans, but the BMC merger of 1968 saw the end of Morris Commercial Vehicles Ltd as a separate entity. Although still selling strongly, the original Holden design was looking a little dated by the mid-‘50s and General Motors took the opportunity to release a completely restyled model, designated the FE, in July 1956. With integrated rear wings and a curved one-piece windscreen, the Holden took on a modern appearance, more in keeping with contemporary Chevrolets. The engine produced more power, steering was improved with the adoption of a sealed recirculating-ball system, there were better brakes and 12-volt electrics for the first time, with a key-operated starter. Inside, a new dash with built-in speaker grille, lockable glove box and redesigned instrument cluster was the big news but a host of minor changes, such as pendant-style clutch and brake pedals, made the FE more pleasant to drive. Holden raised the compression ratio on the grey motor to 6.8:1, added bigger valves and stronger pistons to increase power and improve performance, while smaller 13-inch wheels gave better roadholding. The FE proved as popular as its FX/FJ predecessors, selling more than 150,000 units in just under two years of production and saw the introduction of a new Station Sedan (wagon) variant, while the commercials (ute and panel van) remained very popular with tradesmen. The ute is still one of the more desirable models of the FE family today, partly due to the rarity - most had hard working lives and therefore few survive today - and also due to the popularity of utes with Holden collectors in general. In the years following the First World War, Rolls-Royce supplemented the Silver Ghost with an entirely new six-cylinder model codenamed the Goshawk, a car designed to appeal to the owner driver market. Introduced in 1922 and well suited to the prevailing economic conditions of the day, the Twenty proved a remarkable success, becoming the first in a line of smaller horsepower models produced alongside the Phantoms in the period leading up to the Second World War. The Twenty was an innovative design, featuring a 3.1-litre six-cylinder monobloc engine with a one-piece detachable cylinder head and was the first Rolls-Royce engine to feature overhead valves. A three-speed centre-change gearbox was initially used, with a four-speed unit added from 1925 onwards, along with all-wheel brakes. The chassis was a simpler version of the Silver Ghost’s, riding on a 129-inch frame with semi-elliptic suspension front and rear. Visually distinguished by the horizontal shutters on the radiator, the Twenty had been intended by its makers for light tourer coachwork but all too often they were burdened by the additional weight of cumbersome limousines, sedancas and landaulettes. For 1938, the Custom Imperial was stretched further, to a 144-inch wheelbase, and while the standard Imperials had a painted, highly polished wood-grain finish to the dashboard, those of the Custom were painted to harmonize with the upholstery. Imperial Custom vs Custom Imperial was to be reflected years later with Imperial Crown vs Crown Imperial. The main changes in 1938 were a side-opening hood, a horn ring on the steering wheel (replacing the dash-mounted button), moving the emergency brake, rubber-insulated steering gear, a first for any auto maker and front and rear sway bars, the only Chrysler model to have both. The sight of this Superb 1938 Custom Imperial arriving here at our Newcastle facility was something to remember, rolling into the building in absolute grand style after driving a 200km trip from Sydney. This era of motor vehicle manufacturing is long past us now, however we are lucky to see some absolutely beautiful examples still present and this car is one ... and possibly the only one !! Factory RHD and restored to the highest standard by the owner over 3 decades, rare is an understatement.
