The late Robert Ennalls Powell Cannon was a 1939 graduate of the University of Maryland and went on to graduate from the University of Maryland Law School where he received his law degree in 1947 and served as president of his legal fraternity. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1941 - 1946. He trained with "The Fighting 29th" Infantry Division, before being transferred to the Department of Defense's Stars and Stripes daily newspaper and Yankee Magazine, published for the American troops stationed abroad. He was an elected Delegate to the Maryland House of Delegates for 12 years, from 1951 - 1962, where he proudly supported teachers' issues and civil rights laws. He was an attorney and landlord for most of his life, a staunch supporter of the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department and was proud to be selected as Honorary Fire Commissioner for the Salisbury Fire Dept.
