Greater Nicoya, Pataky period VI circa 1000 to 1350 AD. Extremely detailed erotic pottery urn, depicting a seated male grasping his erect manhood in a very sensual and suggestive manor. Polychrome painted in brown, burnt umber, and ochre colors throughout. The figure is seated with knees open wide, one arm resting on his knee. Wearing an elaborate necklace, the urn above him is painted with geometric mirrored designs throughout. Size 9 3/4" H x 11"W x 10 1/2" Deep
Good condition throughout, legs as rattle still functional.
ex-collection of Stanley L. Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81. He was a staff attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission before World War II, then served in the Army in Europe and rose to captain. In 1946 he became a founding partner in his law firm, Kaufman Malchman, Kaufmann & Kirby, which had branches in NYC and Los Angeles. Stanley and his wife Sigrun Rampoldt were avid collectors of Pre-Columbian art.
