This rare example features a smooth single piece round skull with no comb, late 16th or 17th century. 17th century large impressive pauldrons consisting of 5-lames each including the primary defense with a series of rivets in decorative patterns. Several old restored or later replaced lames. Upper cannons 17th century with smooth rotation to each. Couter 17th century matching with rolled edges and linear detailing similar to the helm. Vambrace 17th century with linear detailing and hinged reverse. Gauntlets 17th century (fingers absent) additional oxidization. Breastplate 17th century in high polish and quite heavy. Two riveted turn down bars either side to secure belt or strap. The edged of the lower fauld and collar smooth rolled with pierced holed to the collar. Backplate and breastplate with top shoulder straps that secure to between shoulders. Backplate 17th century hand hammered from a single sheet of steel with rolled edges. Fine and very large Sino-Tibetan bronze seated buddha with partial gilt and red lacquer remnants all over. Buddha is wearing long flowing robes that are incised to the boarders of the sleaves and collar. Buddha sits legs crossed with the right hand extended in the Abhaya mudra (no fear) with the left hand in the Varada mudra (favourable mudra). The head with cobalt blue color hair, elongated ear lobes, red colored lips, and serene nearly closed eyes. Copper seal to the base with an incised pattern. Size: 21 1/4" H, 13 7/8" W

West Africa, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Akan Cultures, Asante or more probably Baule peoples 19th-20th century. Exceptional gold ring in Scorpion form with nice weight and well formed detailing two claws to the front with a small set of beady eyes. The body with a series of linear and banded decoration representing a layered exoskeleton and a bid bi-furcated scorpion tail turned up. This ring was acid tested as 14-18k. The surface appears to have plating as well although testing was consistent with this range. Size ring 3/4" W, scorpion 2" L

Images colored in light flesh colored tons with black colored hair. The album exterior with a light blue color and inscribed to the last page, probably the Author (KIANAGA) or Torri Kiyonaga 1815 a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Torii school. Originally Sekiguchi Shinsuke, the son of an Edo bookseller from Motozaimokucho Itchome in Edo, he took on Torii Kiyonaga as an art name. Size 6 1/2" x 4 1/8"

Southern California Collection

Solid metal guard with an American eagle head pommel entirely made of metal. Bone carved grip with linear incised designs, patinated over time and use. Guard is arched with five bulb details in ascending to descending order. Blade is finely etched and a technique known as "bluing" was used to emphasize the fine details. Bluing of weapons and firearm barrels was common practice dating back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and took fine skill to achieve even heat to color specific sections. Size overall 33 1/2" L, blade 28" L

English basket-hilt broadsword 16th century blade with pronounced medial ridge that measures. The blade is an extremely wide and heavy style with raised central ridge and double-edged to a sharp tapering point for thrusting and cutting. British General officer's sword, 1860 – 1901. Reverse ricasso signed: MARSHALL JERMYN ST. LONDON., double acid etched curved blade with wide fuller on each side. Queen’s Crown over VR Cypher (Victoria Regina) and scrolled leaf ornament etched on one side (within Arabesque panel) and on the other side with Queen’s Crown over crossed baton over sword (insignia of British General Officers). Gold (or golden) Proof Mark within the etched Damascus Star on the obverse ricasso. Gothic six-branch knuckle bow, sharkskin wrapped wood grip with brass retaining wires intact. Stepped oval pommel cap. Complete with acorn-shaped bullion thread sword knot. Very good overall, noting excellent blade, and some dents in the scabbard.

Straight Moro kris featuring a cockatoo hilt with original ratan hilt wrap in good condition. Single asang or blade clamp. Double-edge blade with visible signs of delamination. Cockatoo hilt in fruit wood. The Moro people of the southern Philippines resisted Spanish colonialists who tried to eliminate their "heresy". The Moros allowed the Spanish to build forts in the Sultanate of Sulu in the last quarter of the century but Spanish control remained limited to military stations, garrisons and civilian settlements. Proof marks on the left side of barrel. Silver trigger guard, side plate, butt cap are possibly period replacements. Silver butt cap has a raised plumed helmet in front of a panoply of crossed flags and flowering branches. The initial E is stamped on the reverse side. The oval butt plate depicts a flaming grenade over crossed swords and branches. Silver ramrod pipes with hallmark. Wood ramrod , walnut stock has carved floral decoration.13" L, barrel 7 1/4" L

The flask is made of turned wood with a stopper and powder measure made of bamboo. measures 4.5" high x 2.5" in circumference, 5" high overall with the stopper. The center an American powder horn in dark down and tan color with a stopper to one end with light tooling. Size largest 21 1/2" L

Scarce U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers' belt, buckle and chain, circa 1838-1863. An excellent and well preserves belt with proof marks to the rear of the buckle. Gilded chain with all links retained. This branch of the US Army the Corps was founded in 1838. It was comprised of only officers who were handpicked from West Point and tasked with mapping, designing and constructing civil works such as costal fortifications, lighthouses and navigational routes. The Corps of Engineers was merged with the Army Corps of Engineers in 1863. Size 49 3/4" L

Americas, North America, Southwest, Spanish Colonial period 1739-1856. Large and well made Petaca Chest of strapped raw hide leather over wood with intricate strapping in geometric patterns and squares throughout. The face, front, and sides all feature numerous patterns of strapped leather, trunks such as these were used in the southwest and throughout the Spanish colonial period as traveling trunks and chest on wagon for their strength, durability, and modest weight. There is a wrought iron hook to the interior of the chest although no lock plate to the exterior. 31" L x 12" H

No apparent restoration in original condition, loose and missing leather to right side with loose straps throughout. Functions well and opens easily. Losses and areas of staining and soiling as seen.

French cavalier helm hammered from two sheets of riveted steel with a central nasal guard. Modeled after the 16th and 17th century wide-brimmed style hat of like form. Cavalier hats were often felt and usually with a cocked up side or pinned brim. Cavaliers who supported English King Charles I during the Civil War were known for their extravagant dress. The wide brim is blade and upturned to one side with a rolled edge. The skull is hammered from a single sheet of iron with a concave top. For a similar helm see the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 29.158.53) Size 7" H x 14" L x 13 1/2" W

Ornate silver pickelhaube-style decorative helmet with a large embossed copper eagle that reads to the center FR. Size 11 1/2" H x 12" L

Engraved war shield of the Kalam Clan with raised geometric bands in a zig zag pattern on the shield. Carved from a single piece of wood and with two holes for a strap to the center.

An interesting war shield that was used by multiple warriors one with the shield pushing forward and the other with bow and arrow to launch protected assaults from the cover of the large shield. With the advent of firearms the shield became ineffective and most were retired or traded after their extended life and use in battle. Size 37 1/4" H

Maya jade dream masks were likely used in rituals associated with death and the afterlife. Taino people inhabited the Caribbean islands, including present-day Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas, before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The Taino were skilled farmers, fishermen, and craftspeople, known for their advanced agricultural techniques, beautiful pottery, intricate carvings, and unique social and religious practices.

Pre-Columbian, Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz, Aztec 1300CE - 1521CE Stone Face Mask with open eyes and gritting teeth likely a ball player carved from a grey Basalt or Andesite volcanic stone with icy blue or white pigment to the eyes and mouth with some old stucco or soil to surrounding areas. Large round mask with pronounced facial features including an open mouth with gritting teeth, open almond shaped eyes, and his helmet or hairline. Above both ears and slightly forward is a decorative carving possibly reflecting the helmet or hairline. The mask is drilled above both ears with large conical holes and drilled to the top center with a single large hole possibly used to affix additional decoration. 6 1/2" H x 6" W

Mexico, Veracruz 450 - 1000CE Tall Pre-Columbian ballgame palma mounted on custom stand carved from natural grey basalt volcanic rock. The back with a slightly curved shape leading up to a wide circular form, the face with a carved recess, and the base with a gentile arch.

So named because of their similarity to palm fronds the Pre-Columbian palma was a Veracruz tool used to protect the Mesoamerican ballgame players vital organs from damage caused by the rubber ball. Palmas which are believed to be specific to Veracruz would be worn slightly away from the chest at their upper most section and affixed at the waist.

Mexico, Veracruz, 450 - 1000CE. Rare Palma form avian bird with a mane of feathers and sharp beak. The face has a unique appearance when shadowed in natural light. Carved in a dark grey basalt volcanic rock with a gentile arch to the lower section. Palmas are so named due to their similarity to palm fonds. The great leaf like carvings were believed to be used by Mesoamerican ballplayers and rested on top of the Yugo. Consists of 8 large heavy jadeite, serpentine, and hardstone beads all carved in cylindric or natural forms and drilled to each for suspension, the spaces between each bead consist of shell and colored beads in orange and black. 10", neck 16 1/2"

Pre-Columbian textile fragment, probably Nazca 100BCE-800CE. From the southern coast of Peru, with geometric bands of diagonal mountain patterns in red and black to interior and boarder, the top of the fragment in a light tan or whitish color, the lower textile fragment with strips mostly all intact. Textile 13" L

Remains of toffee colored bands and caramel fossilized gum, this is a wonderful and larger example then seen. Edges still with some deadly serration. It was once believed prior to the discovery of the oversized shark that the teeth were tongues of dragons, or possibly space rocks fallen to earth. Size 4 1/2" L

Gorgeous fourteen pound cubic natural teal grey fluorite quartz crystal mineral specimen cluster. Uniquely colored throughout, when light shines directly through the piece, the colors wonderfully vary from grey, teal, lilac purple and opaque. Philippines, Kankanay or Bontoc-carved wooden house God figure (Galgalawa-en) made of solid Narra hardwood, circa 1st Quarter of 20th Century. This wooden house-god figure, known as Galgalawa-en, hails from the Bontoc or Kakanay people of Northern Luzon, the Philippines. It is dating back to the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Crafted from a single piece of tropical hardwood, this male figure sits on a rounded platform with arms crossed, evoking a possible mortuary stance. His facial features are striking, with prominent eyes, an aquiline nose, reflecting the distinctive "Tinaguiing" style. Size 24" H x 7" L x 6 1/4" W

Traditionally, such figures were intricately carved during the construction of a new house. They held significant ceremonial importance, placed near the hearth when a new fire was kindled for cooking. Subsequently, they served as protective house-god figures, safeguarding domestic activities and ensuring the well-being of the household. While bearing similarities to the Bulul figures of the nearby Ifugao, these Galgalawa-en figures boast unique patinas. Its believed they were regularly anointed with a mixture of cooking fat and charcoal from the hearth, a ritual that imbued them with distinctive visual characteristics over time. This differentiation in patina distinguishes them from the Bulul figures, which acquire encrusted patinas through offerings of animal blood.

A pair of Philippine Lagawe Village Ifugao Bulul, made of solid Narra hardwood with blood ritual patina. The Philippine Bulul was once part of an American collector's possession, is a striking large-sized Bulul sculpture. Characterized by its stylized design featuring a robust, flat square base and intertwined arms creating a compact seated figure, it embodies the typical traits of Bulul figures. Size 27 1/2" H, 5 3/4" W

The sculpture's patina, a result of natural blood rituals developed over time, along with encrustation, is a defining characteristic often found in Bulul pieces originating from specific regions of Ifugao. This unique patina, imbued with the spiritual essence of the rituals, adds depth and authenticity to the sculpture, enhancing its cultural significance.

These Philippine sculptures, originating from the Lagawe Region of Ifugao, exemplify a distinctive primitive canonical style. Their semi-heart shape faces adorned with elements of indigenous art, captivates the viewer. Notably, their cylindrical legs their and standing postures evoke a sense of strength and resilience. The figures bear a patina of soot, reminiscent of the aged Bulul figures found in the region. Despite the absence of carved genitalia, the make figure is discernable by its flat chest, while the female figure boats carved breasts. Size 24" H, 6 3/4" W

Asia, Himalayas, Region of Tibet, 18th century Statue of Kalachakra " Deity and Consort " in gilded bronze with previously painted facial features, red painted hair, and ritually regilded areas. The deity and consort are standing atop two lesser beings and a double lotus base. The consort with four faces and only four arms each holding varied talisman. The deity with four faces and 12 arms to each side holding talismanic objects original to casting of the statue.

Kalachakra which means " Wheel of Time" is a tantric Buddhist deity of four faces, twenty four arms, and two legs. The deity can be male or female and generally represents the ultimate reality of the universe and the nature of the mind. For a similar example in the 18th century see the online archives of The Himalayan Art Resource (item no. 36433). Size 14 1/2" H x 10 " W

The reverse an opening, cast with the base in one section, the body of each deity in another and the heads of the deity in separate section, and the hair the deity in a final section.

Pair of Sculptures Standing Buddha Shakyamuni and Green Tara appear from the same region or possibly even temples and feature similar, stone(fine-grained grey basalt), triangular peaked columns(to the background), poses/iconography, and period of carving while Standing Buddha appears slightly earlier stylistically than Green Tara they may only be 100-200 years apart. The bases and stands which elevate and hold both the piece are exceptionally made and feature detachable arms, steel construction, protective rubber pads, and are of quality enough to support the piece in transit travel. Los Angeles Collection 2018, Pasadena Collection 2018 Prior, Bernstein Collection 1970s. Standing Buddha medieval Pala period 8-12th century North-East India. Carved in mid to high relief from a beautiful grey fine-grained basalt stone. Buddha standing represents repelling conflict or often rising from meditative state to teach the 'Four Noble Truths' of Nirvana, in slightly bent pose but both feet planted standing Buddha is ready to teach and travel. Buddha is wearing long 'monastic' robes covering both shoulders and in left hand grasping his long robes and right hand outstretched over a lotus flower in 'Varada Mudra' pose for granting wishes "Varada or Gesture of Charity". Buddhas' relaxed meditative facial expression shows him smiling with elongated earlobes and traditional style hair, behind Buddha is a large looping Halo adorned with ornate bands of beads and lotus flowers. To the background are two columns in striking design with long shafts to a folate under over design and column capital with triangular folate object to their peak. To the outer edge of the stele there are traditional Buddhist symbols of a temple peaks in a multi-banded and triangular shape. An incredible piece of carving from the Pala period 11th century. 68cm. in height, 31.8cm in width, and 12.3cm in depth. (32" H on stand) Standing goddess 'Green' tara, medieval Pala period 8-12th Century North-East India Tara which means 'Saviouress' is the female manifestation of Buddhist lord of compassion 'Avalokitesvara Padmapani'. Tara is carved in Mid to High Relief from a beautiful grey fine-grained Basalt stone, standing with slightly bent pose, right hand open in 'Varada Mudra' pose for granting wishes and held down in front of an up stretched flower in bloom. Her robes and rich adornments that of a Bodhisattva with long stretched beaded and jeweled belts, necklace, and jewelry. In the left-hand Tara holds a long stem closed 'Utpala' lotus flower as is her tradition. Tara has a smiling face with closed eyes in contemplative state, long earlobes with large earrings and very high crown above her head, in the crown is scrolling designs and The Buddha to the center, to the rear a large beautifully adorned looping Halo. In the background Tara stands in front of a stunning early Foliage Style Indian column with triangular tipped capital. To the surrounding the 'Bodhisattva' is flanked by several Buddha one of a different variation of Tara another of Buddha in seated traditional pose and another obliterated on a double lotus base. A stunning piece of the late Pala period 12th century. Measures 81cm. in height, 32cm. in width, and 15.5cm in depth. (34" H on stand)

Chinese cloisonne is made in various stages and is considered a group effort as first the metal worker makes the base horse, carriage and rider. Then the next artist works on detailing the base pieces with fine thin copper wire. Finely the last artist will be the one to finely ground and create enamel powders in different colors to finish the piece. Size 9 1/2" L x 5 3/4" W

Well made bronze censor converted to a lamp. Bronze Champleve enamel lamp is covered in blue and floral enamel with open bronze work to top. The cap of the censor opens and allows access to replace bulbs. Champleve enamel is a rarer form of Cloisonne enamel and characteristically wider and more simplistic in it's application. Was previously in working condition and can have wiring repaired to continue use as a lamp. Qing Dynasty. 26 1/2" H

Very stylistically similar to the work done by Hao Ping (1952-present) a woman brushes her hair on the jungle floor among lily pads, flora and dawn redwood trees. This piece is unsigned on the face and has not been removed from the frame. Size of frame 33 1/2" W x 33 1/2" H, sight 26" H x 26" W

The entire stone is intricately detailed front and back, with the reverse set among a canyon wall with dragons spewing flames and chasing flaming pearls. Rare Chinese sandstone Luohan head. The carved face of an old enlightened follower of Buddha detailed with wrinkles, elongated earlobes, wide nose and smiling in a jovial appearance. Probably Ming Dynasty or earlier 1368-1644

In traditional Buddhist belief, a Luohan is a disciple who has attained enlightenment through intense personal effort. Luohan's are followers of the Buddha who have reached enlightenment, but have not yet attained the higher state of nirvana. They protect the Buddhist faith and its teachings. Size 7 1/5" H x 8" L

Previously mounted on a stand now absent, the remaining mount hole filled with composite for a small round shaft instead of the large square wood peg hole still visible around the filling. Various knicks and chips throughout with the face in good detail.

China, Han Dynasty probably Western Han 206 BCE-220 CE. Exceptional and semi-translucent jade 'scabbard chape' carved in openwork dragon motif from an exception stone of thick white jade. Dragon heavily coiled to the central semi-rectangular motif and with carved fruit bat or animalistic face to the uppermost section, the base pierced with two smaller drilled holes for connection and one larger drill for connection to the scabbard. Scabbard chape would be affixed to the lower most section of the scabbard and examples of heavily decorated jadeite hardstone elements remain where most excavated components have dissolved with time.

Chinese, Qing Dynasty 1644-1912 composed green jade ink rest with inlaid pierced white jade belt plaque of a carved dragon with scrolling. The Ink rest of a dark speckled green jade stone with turned ends carved to legs, the belt plaque a fine translucent white jade stone with piercing and openwork depicting an intricate avian form winged dragon and background scene of dense foliage and scrolling. Size 2-3/4" H x 7-1/2" W

As-is condition mounted to base with minor surface scratches.

Chinese, Qing Dynasty 1644-1912 CE. Exquisite Chinese intricate openwork carved white or hetian jade toggle of an avian / crane. The crane in a resting position with head turned back towards foliage scene with carved ripe peaches. Includes copy of analysis from Professor Gu Fang author of "The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, Science Press, Beijing, 2005" his analysis concludes that the carving is believed to be of the late Qing period and does not indicate signs of later craftsmanship. Size 3" L

The stone is well kept with no hidden repairs or apparent damage, the primary ripe peach has a well worn section where the inclusion of the brown skin is visible in transition

The white jade gourd's and brown jade fruit bat carved from the same stone show how an inclusion can be rendered a beautiful component of the higher quality white jade stone. Antique and impressive Spanish Armada Galleon of a 60-cannon war ship rendered in wonderful detail. Oversized model rendered with fantastic attention to detail, a tall ship triple mast and multiple flags including a long banded red and white, a stripped blue and white flag, and a red fleur. The ship is a blue, green, and brown with details including lines and intricately carved details of cherubs, swans, and Lamps throughout. The model was likely produced during 1888-1930s for film production and was purportedly used in a early unknown film production. 41 1/2" L x 39" H x 17" W

A well assorted lot of early wrought iron tools and kitchen implements. Scissors later the rest primarily marked 18th century and largest 9 1/4"

Very rare early magic lantern, purchased from the Pettibone MFG Military & Society Goods of Cincinnati, Ohio. The magic lantern was used in Fort Howard Maryland as a training tool as well as a way to provide news updates at the military fort, from about 1895 - 1915. This particularly large example was used in a large auditorium, and maintained three historic generations of lighting equipment. The three light sources included show the historical transition from a gas light source to electrical ark light and finally ending with electric lighting. Featuring original rare and early Limelight and oxy hydrogen flame light source. Also included is a carbon ark source with rare unused carbon rods. The final light source is the later electric light and mirror. Cherry wood base with all brass construction of the lens components. Glass optics are all present and working as shown. Stamped 'US' identifying it as Military property. Stored in it's original wood case and accompanied by generations of original lighting sources, equipment and components including tools. Four original glass military training slides included one in color. Size of larger box 30 1/2" W x 20 1/14" H x 12" deep, magic lantern base 26 1/2" W, 24" H.

Box keys absent, well preserved with some flaws commensurate with age.

A tall ark comes with 11 figures and has an open lower deck, a tall enclosed deck, and flags at the top of chimney stacks. Size 16 1/2" W x 19" H.

Candelario Medrano 1918-1986 was a famous ceramicist, glass worker, and potter who was the adopted son of Julian Acero a celebrated folk artist. Candelario spend his early life making banks and whistles similar to those of his adoptive father. At the start of the 1960s he became close to Jorge Wilmot who helped foster his expansion into the larger structures he would become famous for including arks, apartment buildings, and much more.

Repairs and restoration including both roof supports broken and reattached, overpainting and other flaws. As-is condition.
