Mint: Denver Mintage: 2,000 Obverse Designer: Augustus Lukeman Reverse Designer: Augustus Lukeman Composition: Silver Fineness: 0.9000 Weight: 12.5000g ASW: 0.3617oz Daniel Boone was once known by all as one of the first folk heroes of the United States. His service during the French and Indian War was followed by the exploration of the newly acquired Florida in 1763. Unfortunately Mrs. Boone did not appreciate the heat and humidity of the territory, so Boone commenced his explorations of Kentucky during 1769-1771. They attempted to establish a colony there in 1773, but were foiled by hostile Native Americans. He persevered two years later, however, establishing Boonesboro in 1775. While there were some hostilities between Boone and the Native tribes, he eventually made Peace with Chief Blackfish of the Chillicothe tribe, an event depicted on the commemorative coin. In late spring of 1934, sculptor Augustus Lukeman was hired by the Kentucky Daniel Boone Bicentennial Commission to prepare designs for the coin honoring the frontiersman. Unfortunately for the commission, Lukeman ignored several of their artistic requirements for the coin, and eventually the Commission was forced to concede and simply run with the designs provided after minor changes. The obverse features a left-facing idealized portrait of Daniel Boone, along with United States of America and Half Dollar. On the reverse, full-length figures of Boone and Chief Black Fish face one another against a backdrop of the Boonesboro blockhouse at left and the rising sun at right. To the left is the inscription DANIEL BOONE BICENTENNIAL and to the right the words PIONEER YEAR are featured. The latter is a reference to the date 1934, which appears below the figures on coins minted in 1934 and above the phrase itself on pieces coined during part of 1935 and thereafter through 1938. A powerful west coast banker and sugar baron named Claus Spreckels had focused his attention on Hawaii upon passage of a reciprocity treaty between the two countries in the 1870s. Reduction of tariffs provided for in this legislation potentially made sugar cane production extremely profitable, giving Spreckels the window of opportunity he needed. He soon leased and later acquired thousands of acres of land on Maui, irrigated the once-dry isthmus, and built mills to process the cane. His influence on King Kalakaua and strong connections in California eventually prompted a contract with the United States Mint to produce the 1883 Hawaiian coinage, on which his healthy commission included the hundreds of thousands of coins that were later melted. 1935-S San Diego Commemorative Half Dollar graded as Almost Uncirculated by the consignor. Nice coin with superb details. The California-Pacific Exposition half dollar, more popularly known as the San Diego half dollar, was issued in 1935 and 1936 to celebrate the city’s exposition during those years. The sole purpose of the coin was to help raise money for the fair, and its sponsors went to great lengths to try to maximize the profits from the coins’ sales. Legislation was passed on May 3, 1935 authorizing the mintage of not more than 250,000 pieces. No specifics were given in the bill as to what date or mint mark would appear on the coin. This oversight was used to full advantage by Exposition treasurer Emil Klicka when sales fell short in 1935. Unfortunately for the issuing committee, the maximum mintage of the coin was never realized as many ended up in the mint’s smelters (330,000 of them in fact, which was 80,000 more than the authorized mintage!) Accomplished and well-respected sculptor Robert Aitken, creator of both the Panama-Pacific fifty-dollar pieces and the Missouri Centennial Half, was selected to design and sculpt the coin. He clearly earned his reputation, as his original designs were wholeheartedly accepted by the Commission of Fine Arts, with the only change being the addition of the word LIBERTY. Today, the coin he designed is considered one of the most beautiful of the classic commemorative series. The obverse depicts the Roman goddess Minerva seated next to a grizzly bear and a shield emblazoned with the motto EUREKA. A tiny pickaxe-wielding minor as well as a square-rigged ship, both of which are adapted from the California state seal, can be found to the left. Arranged in an arc above this tableau is the legend •UNITED•STATES•OF•AMERICA• and below it is the value HALF•DOLLAR. Between Minerva’s base and the value is the motto LIBERTY. The reverse of the coin is dominated by two of the California Buildings at the exposition: the Chapel of St. Francis (with dome) and the California Tower. To the right is the date, and to the left is the name SAN DIEGO. Outside this border, arranged in a peripheral arc, is “CALIFORNIA•PACIFIC•INTERNATIONAL•EXPOSITION”. The progress of this issue was rapid, and only a month after approval of the design, 250,000 pieces were struck at the San Francisco Mint in August of 1935. By the 12th of that month, the coins were on sale at the exposition. While a decent number of coins were purchased by fair-goers, the committee expected the coins to be purchased in greater numbers by the coin collecting community. It soon became evident that sales would total in the tens, rather than hundreds, of thousands. Therefore, the committee went back to Congress, which authorized the melting and re-issue of 180,000 of the coins. These new, 1936-dated coins were struck at Denver. Klicka tried to raise the price from $1 to $1.50 to illicit more demand, but it was not to be. 1891-S Seated Liberty Quarter graded by the consignor as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. A Superb, original coin with light even toning. 1920 Maine Commemorative Half Dollar graded by the consignor as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated with a bright surface. While Maine was settled by French colonists as early as 1604, it was not until March 15th, 1820 that Maine became the 23rd state. 100 years later, Maine Representative John Peters sought the striking of a coin to commemorate the anniversary. Congress authorized the mintage of up to 100,000 Maine Centennial half dollars on May 10th, 1920. Proceeds for the sale were to be used to help defray the costs of the centennial celebrations to be held in the state capital Portland. Sketches were submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts, which were then forwarded to sculptor-member James Earle Fraser, of Buffalo nickel fame. He thought the designs were amateurish, but they were still used. Anthony De Francisci, a student of Fraser who would soon sculpt the Peace dollar, completed the plaster models that June and they were approved by the Commission on July 9th of the same year. Obverse features the state seal. A shield bearing a moose and a pine tree is at center, with a farmer and a sailor to the left and right of it, respectively. The Latin motto DIRIGO (I direct) is on a scroll above, with a star above it. Below the shield is a banner inscribed MAINE. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the value HALF DOLLAR are arranged in arcs around the periphery. Reverse A wreath of pine branches. The words MAINE CENTENNIAL 1820-1920 are arranged within it. Above are the statutory legends E PLURIBUS UNUM and LIBERTY; below is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The Philadelphia Mint struck 50,000 Maine halves in the late summer of 1920, but unfortunately they arrived after the Centennial Celebration in Portland. However, about half of that mintage was sold by the State Treasurer before the end of 1920. No further coins were struck, and by 1929, all 50,000 of the coins on hand had been distributed. The 1915-S Panama-Pacific International Exposition coins may be included within this small group, as they commemorate the world’s fair which itself celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. The only coin dedicated solely to recognition of an engineering triumph, however, is the 1936-S half dollar issued to mark the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in November of that year. By the 1930’s, San Francisco was a bustling city of over 600,000 residents. Unfortunately, it was geographically isolated on the tip of a long peninsula, meaning that ferries were often used to traverse San Francisco Bay. The idea for a several-mile long bridge to cross the bay was proposed as early as the 1920’s, but the tipping point came during the depression. The need for new jobs helped propel the project into fruition. Construction of the bridge commenced on July 9, 1933 and was completed during the latter months of 1936. The grand opening was held the weekend of November 12-14, with a long line of motorists and pedestrians eagerly awaiting their turn to cross. Although not ready for opening day, among the souvenirs available a week later were the United States half dollars, coined at the San Francisco Mint and bearing (literally!) a design which honored the engineering achievement. The coin’s design was executed by Jacques Schnier, a Romanian immigrant then living in Oakland. The Commission of Fine Arts reviewed his designs, and after only a few minor changes they were approved. The obverse of the coin is dominated by a grizzly bear, which is a symbol of the state The reverse is a highly stylized view of the newly completed bridge as seen from San Francisco. A ferry building is seen in the foreground, which was to offer the juxtaposition of the old and new ways of transport. The coins were sold at several locations in the Bay Area at the price of $1.50 each. Perhaps the most novel of sales locations was the bridge’s toll booths themselves. Even with interest in the commemorative coin series dropping, sales were quite decent, with 71,369 of the 100,000 coins minted sold. 1996-P United States Smithsonian Proof Silver Dollar graded and certified by ANACS as PF69 DCAM. A bright coin with a spot free surface. 1846-1996 Smithsonian One Dollar issued by the United States Mint and struck in proof. The obverse of the Smithsonian Silver Dollar depicts the “Castle” building located on the Mall in Washington, D.C. with laurel leaves to each side. This was the first Smithsonian Institution building. The inscriptions read “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “Smithsonian”, and the dates “1846-1996”. The obverse was designed by Thomas D. 1936 Albany United States Commemorative Half Dollar graded as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated by the consignor. A very rare early U.S. commemorative. Coin Specifications Category: Silver Commemoratives (1892-1954) Mint: Philadelphia Mintage: 17,658 Obverse Designer: Getrude K. Lathrop Reverse Designer: Getrude K. Lathrop Composition: Silver Fineness: 0.9000 Weight: 12.5000g By 1936, public interest in commemorative coin projects of the Unites States was at an all-time low. By this point, the Mint had already issued many different coins commemorating anniversaries of mostly local significance. The Albany half dollar was no exception. On June 16th of 1936, at the request of the Albany Dongan Charter Committee, a bill was passed to strike no more than 25,000 coins to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the charter of the city of Albany. Once the bill was passed, the committee got to work selecting a designer for the coin. Miss Gertrude Lathrop was the artist selected, as she was born in Albany and was a well-known sculptress. Her obverse design featured a beaver, a common animal of the area, with a maple branch (the state tree) in its mouth. The reverse depicted a group of 3 men dressed in period garb. These men were to represent the first governor of the state, Thomas Dongan, bidding farewell to Peter Schuyler (the first mayor of Albany) and Robert Livingston, who were the two men that convinced Dongan to grant the city a charter in 1686. Surprisingly, the Commission of Fine Arts was for once happy with the design’s artistic merits and the entire mintage of 25,013 (including 13 assay pieces) was coined during October of 1936. The coins were then offered at the price of $2 each by the Charter Committee. Unfortunately for the group, this price was much higher than the more typical cost of $1-$1.50 per coin. Coin collectors, who had already been assailed with nearly twenty commemoratives in that same year, let out a big yawn, and sales of the Albany half dollar fell far short of expectations. To its credit, the Committee refused to discount the coins for several years afterward, trying to maintain the integrity of its program. In a final effort to move the remaining few thousand pieces, the entire lot was offered to coin dealer Abe Kosoff at $50 over face! Unable to find interested backers, and likewise unable to tie up such a sum himself, Kosoff had no choice but to decline the offer. Accepting defeat, the Committee returned most of the unsold coins (totaling 7,342 pieces) to the Philadelphia Mint in 1943, where they were melted, leaving the total mintage at 17,658. 1935 Robinson Arkansas Commemorative Half Dollar graded by the consignor as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. The story of the Arkansas-Robinson Commemorative Half Dollar coin began with the grand plans for marking the state of Arkansas’ 100th anniversary in 1936. After noting the success of other states in funding such events through the sale of commemorative coins, a similar plan was devised by a state-appointed group calling itself the Arkansas Centennial Commission. After the initial success of the original Arkansas Centennial Commemoratives, the commission sought to create additional reverse designs to help raise more funds. This move was prompted by the Texas Centennial Commission scheme to have five new reverses adapted for use with a common obverse. Even after scaling down their desires to 3 new reverse designs, however, Congress forced the Arkansas Centennial Commission to make do with just one new design. Legislation passed on June 26, 1936 authorized a supplemental production of not less than 25,000 nor more than 50,000 coins. Unlike the long and painful process associated with producing the designs and models for the Arkansas Centennial half dollar, the Robinson coin progressed smoothly and quickly. It was ultimately decided that Joseph T. Robinson, a former member of the United States Senate and Governor of the state would grace the new reverse of the coin.
