Lead Original Signed 5' Landscape OOC Painting, PD Hall
Description
Possibly circa late 1800s to early 1900s, a very large original oil on canvas painting depicting a lush mountainous landscape with waterfall and snow-capped mountain with two men tending to what appears to be a shrine with a glowing white cross. Signed by the artist under the name "P.D. Hall" in lower right corner and measures 64" x 38" (approximately 3' wide x 5' long). The painting is in very good condition per its age with the frame having just a few chips as shown. Despite our research we could find no information on the artist; however, the painting intends to duplicate the famous "Heart of the Andes" painting by Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). Church was a student of the Hudson School of Landscape Painting in the mid-1800s, a world traveler who worked en plein air (i.e., painting outdoors), from sketches and from memory. Church spent years traveling around the world to document the grandeur of nature including South America where he completed numerous sketches for his monumental "Heart of the Andes" painting. A most interesting aspect is that Church's painting does not depict a specific location, but instead combines several locations in Equador where he discovered "the splendor of nature as a resource for spiritual renewal and national identity." His masterpiece was unveiled to the public in New York City on April 27, 1859. Over the course of three months 12,000 people paid 25-cents each to view the 5' x 10' painting lit by gas lights concealed behind silver reflectors in a darkened chamber adding to its drama. Church's "Heart of the Andes" sold for $10,000 which at the time was the highest price ever paid for a painting by a living American artist. Today it resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. *See our upcoming Facebook page for more information about the "Heart of the Andes" painting and Frederic Edwin Church.
