The clear water streams of the ozarks were perfect for the use of this method. They were also used in the winter time when the ice was on by cutting holes in ice with axes and as a group pushing fish past the holes for the fishermen to gig the fish as they swam past. Today there are still sportsman that enjoy the sport of catching fish in this manner. Hand forged tools made for the same purpose there are rarely two that are identical and thus collected by fishing enthusiasts, a reminder of how our forefathers got it done.
