1880’s Dry Stamped Adolphe Giraudon Framed Albumen Photo “Man With The Glove”. An incredible find of a piece of French history which is easily accessible to realize through research. Founded in 1887, Giraudon is the prestigious French picture archive dealing specifically in fine art, history, architecture and archaeology. Giraudon contains images from thousands of collections depicting the art and culture of every continent. French art features strongly and highlights include Impressionist works from the Muse Marmottan-Monet, Paris, and images from the Musée Condé, Chantilly which is also home to the famous manuscripts 'Les Trés Riches Heures du duc de Berry'. Key French collections are also represented such as the Bonora collection of Asian art. Under the ownership of Editions Larousse from 1953 to 1991, Giraudon acquired a vast number of historical engravings, book illustrations and fine examples of French master photography. This piece should belong with the Bridgeman Art Library, who recently in 2001 obtained a large prestigious French fine art picture lot archive from Getty Images, Inc. “The Man with a Glove” is an oil-on-canvas portrait by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian, c. 1520. Also known in French as “L’ Homme au Gant, par Le Titien.” It has been kept in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, as written in top left of the photo. Adolphe Giraudon was a French photographer who lived from 1849-1929, and was a specialist in reproductions and providing documents for artists using. This item is in fact an authentic original photograph slide, with dry stamp of Adolphe Giraudon in the lower right corner. The original title and information of this piece is shown in the upper left hand corner. Measures 9 1/2” tall, 8 1/2” wide. Photo is in great condition with no bends breaks or cracks in the board. Some discoloring can be seen along the left flank. Upon closer inspection, newspaper backing shows date of 1893, giving more provenance: one side has an ad for the White Star Line RMS Teutonic boarding tickets. This newspaper clipping is being sold in a different listing and will not be included with this framed photograph. Antique wooden 3” wide around frame is well made, labeled by maker on back. Hanging wire has been applied. Style and condition suggests late 1800’s. Measures 14 1/4” tall, 13 1/2” long. Some minor knicking around the edging of frame. Backing has a complete split in the wood. Original tack nails in place on back to hold contents. There was no glass with this frame. (box 454A)
